Here's a remix of Smith Westerns ' 'End of the Night' by fellow Weird World signings Peaking Lights. The original happy feeling is dampened down, and well...have a listen and decide for yourself if it's for you.
Bay Area psychedelic pop enthusiasts Peaking Lights released one of the more interesting singles of the year with their ridiculously chill "Tiger Eyes (Laid Back)". Now we find the duo remixing Chicago indie rockers Smith Westerns . They take on Dye It Blonde highlight "End of the Night" and turn it into a swampy, kaleidoscopic trip. Peaking Light's album 936 massively rocked our world so it's lovely to hear a mix of their influences and, as expected, it's as far-out and diverse as you could possibly get. "The songs that we've been working on have been very groovy and psyched out, foraging deeper into new rhythm techniques and territories, smoother bass lines w/ a heavy dub influence looking outward to private press boogie records, african & latin rhythms and tranced vibrations of the most killer all nite party you've never been to: less cocaine, more weed." The Wisconsin production duo Peaking Lights have remixed "End Of The Night," a languid glam-rock jam from Smith Westerns' recent album Dye It Blonde . In their hands, it's a vaguely peppy lo-fi dub track. As remixes go, it keeps big parts of the original intact while still finding ways to change the song drastically. Wisconsin dub-pop duo Peaking Lights recently got hold of the Smith Westerns' glittery "End of the Night." They've gone heavy on, well pretty much everything, but especially the bass and stretched out the guitar riffs into a wall of wails, resulting in a trippy extension that brings out the best of both worlds. It will cost you parting with your e-mail address, but if either bands have caught your ear recently, it's well worth it. [ via ] Hit the skip to download the remix.

The wonderful Peaking Lights have put together a couple of damn fine mixes for the Gorilla vs Bear guys. The latest one has reached it's download limit on soundcloud, so I went to the trouble of ripping it — it's that good — so now it's available to all. Woo. I used this handy little program , which is a nifty oul hoore for grabbing the feisty ones. Peaking Lights - Mixxed Up [stream / download] [...]
Last year, right around the time summer turned to fall, we at Stereogum published our list of the 40 best new bands of the year . The idea of a "new" band is a pretty nebulous one, since many of the kids we listed were probably planning out their musical ventures in their basements since they were 11, but these were all artists who started to make a dent in our collective consciousness last year. This year, we've got another crop of 40 new artists who deserve your attention. So here we go again. A few clarifications [...]
L.A. by way of Madison stoned-out electro duo Peaking Lights have signed to Domino in order to release their great LP, 936, overseas for the first time. Until Domino--and Weird World/Mexican Summer--signed the couple of Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis, their album was only available overseas as an expensive import. No longer! 936 is due out in the U.K. on Nov. 21. To celebrate their signing, the group has compiled a monster 85-minute mix that is very reminiscent of their own music, and of Coyes' DJing before local club shows in Madison. Shit [...]

The husband-wife duo's first release for the label will be their album 936, which has already been released in the US, due on November 21st 2011.

To celebrate the announcement of their much-deserved signing to Domino / Weird World / Mexican Summer on the strength of one of the best albums of 2011 , Peaking Lights have hooked up another one of their impeccable, impossibly eclectic mixes (like the one they made for us back in April ) for free download. Grab it below, and check out more info on the re-release of 936 - and news of their new record, due in 2012 - here . [...]

Domino label Weird World have unveiled a plethora of Peaking Lights -related news, the first one being that they have signed to themselves. The West Coast husband/wife duo consisting of Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis are to play a handful of UK and European dates, including a show at Plastic People that seems like the perfect venue to compliment their dark dub-pop psych sensibilities. The dates are: December 3rd - BitterZoet - Amsterdam (NL) 6th - Plastic People - London (UK) [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] Recently found Peaking Lights on last.fm and checked out their episode of Sound Builders, a pretty committed couple doing wonderful things, really inspiring, makes me want to buy a soldering iron too. Kompakt has really done it with this Walls signing,i'm floored by the beauty of this track, steam filled with a dark drive. I'm getting into this Thundercat record and its reminding me of what music I was in [...]

It defeats the purpose to be describing music made purely to be experienced, but what then is left to be said? In the world of husband and wife duo Peaking Lights and their album 936 , the medium of dub transcends its function as form or genre. In a loose Mcluhanesque sense, it has become the message itself, operating as an undisguised narcotic somewhat like an extension of our bodily senses. This strategy isn't new, having been pushed to its limits by the likes of Spiritualized, for which music-on-drugs blends effortless with music-as-drug. Their sound itself isn't [...]

This is Night People Records . They aren't just awesome, they are so eye-wateringly awesome I am tempted to give up on the label business altogether and take up knitting. I'm a pretty phlegmatic kind of a person most of the time, and there are very few labels who generate any kind of real envy in me, but these guys definitely manage it. Johnny from Fence and Stuart from Chemikal Underground are such lovely guys I could never be that nice if I took classes, never mind the respect I have [...]

Compiling a list like our recent Best Albums of 2011 (So Far) typically leaves one with two thoughts. The first is: which records that have yet to come out will appear on the year-end list? With one of our favorite artists seemingly announcing a new album every day (Jay-Z & Kanye West, Girls, Active Child, M83, Feist, Pusha T, Dum Dum Girls, St. Vincent ...), the answer is likely: lots of them. The second, more troubling question, is: which albums did we miss? In the 21st century the constant deluge of new music can be overwhelming, [...]

This is a track from the recent critically acclaimed Peaking Lights LP '936'. This endearingly lo fi track is my pick from the record, with a timeless feel and an almost chilling aspect to it. The beautifully underplayed soulfulness in Indra Dunis' vocals propel the song to another level whilst the continuously warped guitar leads the track into a journey through a dreamy land. The flange filled piano break lifts the song into almost Chairlift pop song territory but not before the scratchy guitar solo brings us back down. James

Faceplant — Ride the Ether (excerpt) Bathetic 's latest drop is a split 12" between Bitchin Bajas and Faceplant, who, as you can tell by that potent album art, specialize in similarly zonked-out brands of psych music. While Bajas ( CAVE 's Cooper Crain) embarks on a free-floating synth drift with tracks like "Consciousness 1" , Faceplant's Aaron Coyes (better known as 1/2 of dub-pop powerhouse Peaking Lights ) stays grounded with a mix of minimal drum work and [...]
