Life at the moment is hectic for Pearl and the Puppets frontwoman, Katie Sutherland, as her career has seemed to explode in recent months after a change of management. She is currently recording her debut album, and is gigging across the UK to promote it and we at Crack in the Road managed to catch her before her performance in Dundee headlining Abertay University's freshers week. As usual, the Dundee crowd was sub-par (see my other reviews in Dundee, its all the same) which is miles away from the crowds she has performed in front of [...]
Katie Sutherland of Pearl and the Puppets is the next artist to take a stab at the 10 TGTF Quickfire Questions... (Editor's note: For more details on the Quickfire Questions feature, please read more on the inaugural edition of Quickfire Questions featuring the Joy Formidable. ) 1. What song is your earliest musical memory? 'Yesterday' by The Beatles 2. What was your favourite song as a child? 'Little Miss Can't Be Wrong' [...]
I can't keep up, there are too many small scale video 'companies' popping up, filming all my favourite artists in acoustic settings. This time, it's Secret Sessions on location at Hoxton Square during their 'Queen Week' with Pearl and the Puppets . Well, actually, it's just Pearl (Katie Sutherland) sans the Puppets, and she's doing her version of the '70s band's hit 'Somebody to Love'. It's actually refreshing not to have all that extra orchestration muddling up the track for once. And it's somewhat surreal to hear the engines [...]
You can say that Zimbabwe native Tinashé has made it. You can say that about any musician featured on MTV, right? However, yesterday was the first time I have ever heard of the man. It's probably because I haven't watched MTV since Ruthie from the Real World went to rehab. His new album mixes sounds [...]

VENT is a duo composed of Sam Ashwell (Abstrakt Knights) and Dan Havers (DC Breaks). They formed in 2008 with the premise of fusing styles, genres and tempos with one common feature: basslines. The track on this post, Horrible , definitely shows how well that worked out. Their remix is a combination of dubstep, breaks, drum'n'bass, and a bunch of other stuff thrown in for good measure. The result? dankness. The track is even somewhat comedic at times, like when before the first major dubstep section a vocal sample-"you horrible bastard"-plays over a chilled out ambient melody. That might [...]
This is just about the cutest thing. At the request of her legions of fans, Katie Sutherland (frontwoman of Scottish band Pearl and the Puppets ) put together this photo montage of baby pictures and pictures from fans with the song 'I Say Yeah' running in the background. 'Heartfelt' is the operative word here. Awww. Isn't the internet great? Click here to view the embedded video.
Sam Ashwell and Dan Havers of DC Breaks formed VENT in 2007 with the premise of fusing styles, genres and tempos. Their growing reputation both as a production unit and as DJs has seen them play at Glastonbury, Bloc and Glade, remix Si Begg and DJ Fresh and collaborate with Reso and Foreign Beggars. The coming months [...]
Okay, there is some really good shit below. It's an effin' dance party and you're invited to have your way. Instructions are as follows: Go to the Foamo remix and skip ahead to around the 1:30 mark. Let it loudly sound off at the 1:44 mark. Give it a minute or so just to give [...]

Scottish people have a very tuned-in bullshit radar and it came in particularly handy when I went along to the media launch of MILLER FILTERED MUSIC , the latest gig-related venture from the American beer company. The previous one, you may remember, was called The Mill and it gave fans free entry to watch over 200 local acts play in Glasgow and Edinburgh from August 2008 to March 2010. The new project will see three established bands do one-off shows at Glasgow's Oran Mor in [...]

Secret Garden Party . A haven for the deranged, the drinkers and daydreamers. A cross-pollination of fact and fiction that swayed intrinsically, inherently towards the land of fictitious pleasures, a land devoid of time, rationale and logic. Stumbling through rigorous security checks, along with excess cans of Strongbow and hipflasks brimming with backstreet liquor a grip on reality is also deposited in black bin liners at the pearly gates. Well, entrance marquees... To give a vague, faded and jaded recollection of events almost seems superfluous to any eyes but those of the beholder, so unique an experience [...]
Right. So I'm an unashamed massive fan of Katie Sutherland and her band, Pearl and the Puppets . There's just something so endearing about an artist who actually talks to her fans on Twitter and Facebook and asks for their advice, such as the name of an ex-boyfriend to use in this video for 'Make Me Smile'. (Turns out my suggestions of David and Eddie weren't used.) Come along for a bike ride with Katie below. And notice the t-shirt changes. Click here to [...]
Pearl & The Puppets : Because I Do Après avoir fait la première partie d' Elton John , Pearl & The Puppets (des Puppets qui se dont discrètes mais qui existent bel et bien) et leur style folk qui rappelle parfois Amy Macdonald vont assurer la première partir d' Alphabeat . Ne cherchez pas à comprendre, dîtes seulement: " pourquoi pas " et visionnez la sympathique vidéo du non moins sympathique single Because I Do .

Oft when presented with a new video, words sometimes escape me, as I'm visually treated and transported into a 3 to 4-minute world of pleasing colors and sounds. That said, there are a handful of new videos that have just been born of the net, and I'd like to share 'em with you. At the very least, give each one a full view and I can guarantee you'll notice that a half hour of work (shirked!) has gone [...]
Camera Obscura and Frightened Rabbit will both feature at the Coachella Festival in California this weekend alongside the likes of Gorillaz, Jay-Z and Thom Yorke. Radio 1's Vic Galloway tells us why that's his Scottish gig of the week alongside the only listing of every Scottish band on tour this week outside the UK. Coachella is [...]
Gorgeous brunette lass Katie Sutherland fronts Pearl and the Puppets , a poppy five-piece from Kirkintilloch, Scotland. Already championed on Steve Lamacq's late night Radio2 programme on the 'BBC Introducing...' feature, I have a feeling this band is going to do well this year on the strength of their chirpy, happy sound. They will be supporting Danish pop band Alphabeat on a UK tour in April. I hope a full album is on the horizon soon. In the meantime, check out their MySpace for more sunny music. [...]

- "What would you say to a 15-minute interview for a feature I'm doing?" - "Of course, would it be cool to contact my regional press about it?" - "The phrase 'long way for a short cut' comes to mind" - "I know....it's a pile of pish....(is there such a thing as a pile of pish?!) but they make me do it" [...]

I wish I wrote a song that other people wanted to cover. To me, there's no other honor greater than having other artists cover your song. I could win a Grammy, of course... and that'd be nice, but let's say that U2 decides to cover my song... or Springsteen calls me up and says, "Swap... I know I owe you $83, but whaddya say I cover one of your songs, put it on an album, and we call it even?" I'd probably say yes. PROBABLY. This is not to say that a Grammy isn't a [...]

Imagine a Scottish music festival where your don't have to pay extra to park your car or pitch your tent; where you can come and go as you please from the festival site; where children under 12 can get in for nothing; where stage times are distributed free of charge at the event; where there are designated "quiet zone" camping areas. Imagine no more - this is the BELLADRUM / TARTAN HEART FESTIVAL . So good they named it twice. Location: Beauly, Inverness-shire. [...]
I know it's been a while since the last Just Burn It! mix but you may have noticed all the changes to the site instead. Well as site tweaking settles down I'll be making more mixes for y'all. Lets start with this one! As spring arrives there are often days that turn out to be less warm than we would have hoped. I often find these days to be the most depressing. At least in winter you know what to expect but during these transitional times it can be tough. Hope is often higher than the [...]
