Dreamy folk pop from Sligo's Pearse McGloughlin and his new band Nocturnes. After a bit of a hiatus in 2011 where he was focused on writing and recording a new album, Pearse McGloughlin has released the first single 'Bright Star' as a free download: Bright Star (single edit) by Pearse McGloughlin and Nocturnes 'Bright Star' is a return to form for an musician and composer I rate very highly. Here's a beautiful new tune from two of Ireland's best songwriters Enda Reilly and Pearse McGloughlan. Ag Ól Ag Ól Ag An Garbhóg by endareilly Here's the nicely worded press info anout the song; "Pearse McGloughlin and Enda Reilly have co-written a new song in Irish called 'Ag Ol, Ag Ol ag an Garbhóg'. The name of the song comes from the Garavogue River on which Sligo is built. Sligo so ripe with folklore and history, is [...]

It's been far too long since my last 4 The Turnstiles post but I'm aiming to get back writing about folk music on a regular basis. In a new direction for an interview I asked Sligo born singer-songwriter Pearse McGloughlin if he'd be the Guinea pig for the first interview through the median of Google Chat. What you see below is the [almost] unedited thirty minute chat between Pearse and myself. Peter: [...]

Here is the full list! There's a three way tie for first place because I forgot about 2 great tunes which I had to include. Also I've heard many great demo tracks through-out the year which are not included here. 1 [A]: Resurrection Fern - Brothers This warm and charming folk track is a slice of beauty. It's taken from a wonderful debut album which I'm privileged to [...]

Pearse McGloughlin will be releasing the follow up to his well acclaimed 2009 album 'Busy Whisper' in January 2011. It's a delightful EP and a real breath of fresh air. It's been over a year now since I first heard and fell in love with Pearse's melodic indie sounds of 'Busy Whisper'. Even now I regularly go back to that album to listen to songs like 'Monkey's Paw' 'Partings' and the masterpiece 'Passion Song'. Pearse has released the follow up through Bandcamp for [...]

Fingertips of the Silversmith is a polished, professional and personal album of real quality. However for some reason it fails to ignite passion in me and at times falls flat. Tiger Cooke is a really good songwriter with a pleasant pure voice that I could listen to for days. The best songs on the album are the single 'Out of Reach' which wouldn't be out of place on Ray Lamontagne's Trouble and the uptempo opener 'Rid of Her'. I also really like the Americana [...]
