Peasant - “Those Days” Peasant has an undeniable soundtrack quality to them (er, him— it’s just one dude). I can’t exactly pinpoint why but I always imagine a sappy montage when I listen…as if you blended the better half of the mellow parts of The OC Soundtrack. Peasant’s sound may not be unique, but he’s certainly perfected it. For New Yorkers, Peasant’s playing with Dylan Connor at Public Assembly in Brooklyn this Tuesday (Dec 2nd).

From the small working class community of Doylestown, Pennyslvania, Peasant is the pseudonym for Damien DeRose, a talented singer-songwriter specializing in his own beautifully haunting yet minimalistic style of indie folk. Finally! After more than two years of missing chances to see Peasant perform (view the original EF post on Peasant from Feb '06) our paths finally crossed at Pianos last Tuesday night. The songs were as perfect, imperfect, beautiful, and moving as I expected - even through some fairly annoying technical difficulties, which Damien DeRose handled like a pro. The perfect word to describe Peasant (who moonlights as Damien DeRose) is "warm." Other adjectives I've heard used are "heavenly" and "soft" and "cozy." If you ask me, all of these adjectives fit wonderfully to his music. He's a singer/songwriter whose songs use little besides and acoustic guitar and his voice, which, by the way, has a great quality to it. His songs are short, usually ranging about 2:30 to 3:00.
