With our Fightin' Phils getting ready for their World Series games, we thought we would spread some of our excitement as well as spread some of the Philadelphia music talent with a playlist. Unfortunately, Survivor and Bon Jovi didn't make it, but I am sure Fox will play the heck out of them. GO PHILLIES!!! Since I am heading out of town for a long weekend, the usual weekend show preview is combined with the shows that will be coming through the area today and Thursday. TV on the Radio just dropped their new disc Dear Science and are on tour with the Dirtbombs , playing at the Electric Factory in Philly Friday night. After a long hiatus, Shudder to Think is back together and out on tour. This [...]

Painting Gauche and color pencil by artifact, me Peasant's, music will be exposed to a large audience tonight on the season premier of Fox's television show Bones . The song featured is "Raise Today" and is one of my favorites from his recent release On the Ground . I am not a big television fan but know how important TV placement is for musicians to have a viable shot at making a living. In another music climate Peasant's music would have airplay and I [...]
One of this year's favorites, Peasant is playing in New York on August 12 @ Think Coffee . Damien DeRose is supposedly bringing his loyal fans some surprise gifts, so if anyone's in the area and in the mood to attend a free show, I'll suggest this gig.

Finally! After more than two years of missing chances to see Peasant perform (view the original EF post on Peasant from Feb '06) our paths finally crossed at Pianos last Tuesday night. The songs were as perfect, imperfect, beautiful, and moving as I expected - even through some fairly annoying technical difficulties, which Damien DeRose handled like a pro. Before the show I mentioned to him that it was his song "Icy Deep" that first grabbed my attention and by the second song of his set he was playing [...]
The perfect word to describe Peasant (who moonlights as Damien DeRose) is "warm." Other adjectives I've heard used are "heavenly" and "soft" and "cozy." If you ask me, all of these adjectives fit wonderfully to his music. He's a singer/songwriter whose songs use little besides and acoustic guitar and his voice, which, by the way, has a great quality to it. His songs are short, usually ranging about 2:30 to 3:00. But they need not be any longer as he manages to say so much in the two and a half minutes he gives us. As it's 1:45 [...]

I've never really been able to listen to anything on Advisory Committee by Mirah other than "Recommendation," because I've always figured that was all I needed to listen to. I don't consider myself a fan of Mirah, or familiar with her voice, but I was still compelled to check out her album, The Old Days Feeling , which is a compilation of rarities and never before heard tracks. The sound of the songs on The Old Days Feeling really does provide a nostalgic mood. There's a dash of reminiscence on this record, [...]

Peasant is de nom de plume of Damien DeRose, currently based in Doylestown, PA. He writes melancholy folk songs for the alt.country crowd. The songs on is album On the Ground are acoustic guitar driven. It never speaks up and there is no need for that -- Damien DeRose can get his message across by keeping his singing at conversation level. On the Ground is released on Paper Garden Records . MP3: Peasant - Exposure MP3: Peasant - Fine [...]

It's almost the weekend and May has started. It's time to get to some shows. WXPN is having a little CD release party for its latest XPN Local volume. Doors open at 6 and the music starts at 7. Its an all local show (as you probably figured) featuring great acts from around the Philly region. Most notably, Bucks county natives Illinois and singer-songwriter extraordinaire Peasant are on the bill. This event is free, but you must sign up at [...]

I've been listening to this album that has already been released this year in February, by this guy named Damien DeRose, who goes by the performance name Peasant . His album, On The Ground , is a compilation of easy listening folk and pop, which is modestly presented for pleasurable listening. However, I've never even heard of Peasant before today. But listening to his sophomore record gives you this experience that you might not always get. DeRose's songs are beautiful and subtle. They're gentle and satisfying. Peasant's easiest comparison is probably Elliot Smith , [...]
Doylestown, PA's Damien DeRose has recently released On The Ground , his sophomore effort and I'm diggin' his track called Wind . The lyrics are interesting..."I am speakin' for the wind, blowin' on my door, it's sayin words I know, but in a different order..." This sorta folky, drifter jam , reminds of a scene from my short lived train hopping days; open track, middle of no where, with an amazing view. I also agree with Matt Tyson when he said it's perfect for the next Wed Anderson film. Damien also goes by [...]
