It's pretty much a perfect indie rock song from the mid 2000s, i.e. nearing the end of the good 'ol days. It has one of my favorite lyrics with "You were too busy steering the conversation toward the Lord / To hear the voice of the spirit begging you to shut the fuck up." It makes the cynical bastard in me laugh every time! Put it on the next mixtape you make for random girls and watch [...]

As Texas kids of the 90s, we grew into our own listening to the music of Centro-matic , Pedro the Lion and Bedhead , all who have components that are playing key roles here. That's right, you've got the Kadane's, Will Johnson and Mr. Bazan. I don't think that anyone who was around that the very thought of that combination alone gets chills going.
by Flavorwire

We surely can't be the only ones who suppressed a shudder when we saw the title of My Morning Jacket songwriter Jim James' new solo album: Regions of Light and Sound of God . As it turns out, the title doesn't necessarily mean that James has gone born-again on our hellbound asses, but either way, we have to admit that our reaction did rather have us reassessing our own prejudices: would James going all Christian necessarily mean that the resultant album would suck massively? We have to say that the answer is probably no some of our [...]

Control , an album he released ten years ago with his former band, Pedro the Lion , is filled with lies, adultery, murder, and some melodies that you'll want to hear over and over again, even while the lyrics give you chills. It begins too early, is far too repetitive, and, quite frankly, is a bit boring. That is, until this year. It began with "The Week Between", a new track off One Christmas at a Time , an LP that finds Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick (The Long Winters) collaborating for a full album of original Christmas music. His first full-length effort as Pedro the Lion, 20002s Winners Never Quit, told the story of the corruption and redemption of a politician, and was a favorite of mine at the time. Despite its intensely personal lyrics, capable songwriting and obvious ambivalence toward Christianity, a particularly agenda-laden Pitchfork review savaged the record and derisively called Bazan a "Christian rocker". A devout Christian writing song/parables about religion and violence and drug abuse and greed and hate and pretty much all the deadly sins. Sort of an acquired taste one would say but I was a fan.
