Shawn Brackbill When I first started playing guitar in high school, I spent an inordinate amount of time in music and pawn shops looking for pedals - they were (relatively) cheap, fun, and would obviously make me a far better player than, oh, practice. And one thing that these shops' stock had in common were chorus pedals. So many chorus pedals. Some shops were like a veritably baby blue sea of Boss chorus pedals. Because this was the early '90s, when grunge was king and everyone wanted distortions and no one wanted to sound like Andy Summers. [...]

David Bazan announced what will probably be one of my most anticipated tours of the winter today. He'll be hitting the road for two months trekking across the US to celebrate the ten year anniversary of Pedro The Lion's monumentally important record Control . He'll be playing the album in full at each show, so don't miss it. You can catch the dates below, see you in SLC. Thu, November 01 - Boise ID - Neurolux Fri, November 02 - Salt Lake City UT - Urban Lounge [...]

[ Playing a little post-vacation catch-up here, with massive help from long-time friend of the blog Vanessa Deroo. We're pleased to welcome her writing to these electronic pages, and hope we'll be able to wring more out of her as her new, busy English lifestyle permits. -- Ed. ] >> It's hard to believe so much time has blown past, but we suppose we're at a point now where the name of David Bazan 's mothballed project Pedro The Lion may not ring a bell with younger indie fans. But for those of a certain [...]
Its a big week for one of my favorite singer-song writers, Dave Bazan. Bazan has just announced the remastering and reissuing of his work as Pedro the Lion on vinyl, including a first ever vinyl pressing of Fewer Moving Parts, the EP that tided over fans during the long stretch between the last Pedro record [...]
In honor of Independence Day, KEXP is saluting some of our favorite indie record labels who’s DIY-spirit helped revolutionize the music industry. As an independent radio station ourselves, KEXP is thrilled to give a 13-gun salute to these pioneers with a series of label spotlights through the Fourth of July. Chances are that if you're reading this blog, you've probably heard of Sub Pop Records. Arguably the definitive Seattle record label, Sub Pop has been at the forefront of groundbreaking new music for over 25 years. The label's roots lie in a [...]

Today seemed like a normal day as I woke up, went downstairs to make coffee and checked my email. But as with many mundane moments in life, things sometimes have a way of changing in a hurry. As I opened my semi-monthly email from David Bazan and read through all the living room shows I would never be able to attend because they were sold out instantly, I scrolled down a bit and saw this: "Some of you might be familiar with Will Johnson from his collaboration with Bazan in the Undertow Orchestra a [...]

Kenton Loewen is a Vancouver musician who works with the name The Crackling , but he might do well just to go with Dave Bazan Jr. I meanest this in the sincerest form of flattery, and also with the intent of letting you know how much we love both Bazan and our newly annointed Bazan Jr. Loewen, with help from various collaborators is set to release the Ashen EP on May 22nd, and you should expect to find some similarities to early [...]

Frank Lenz: Holy Rollers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Frank Lenz is a multi-instrumentalist on Velvet Blue Music . You may not know his name, but Frank Lenz has had a hand in many of the bands you know and love. Everyone from Pedro The Lion , Richard Swift , The Weepies , Starflyer 59 , Headphones , Everest and The Lassie Foundation have all enjoyed his company at one time or another. Leading an eclectic life musically has also carried over into his personal life [...]

SXSW along with its few musical offshoots and massive swarm of unofficial acts are gearing up for the weekend, with the city streets clogging up tonight as a whole new dynamic sweeps over Austin; for better of for worse. If you blinked over the course of the past few days you likely missed several thousand varied performances, although there's still plenty of time to take in two sets from the great St. Petersburg Florida indie rock band, Alexander & The Grapes. Alexander & The Grapes are playing this Friday afternoon at Dogwood @ 2:15pm and at their [...]

Apparently, Bonnaroo wasn’t the only one having trouble with their site this week! Please excuse our tardiness on this weeks Throwback Tuesday …. At any rate, pushing back David Bazan (formerly of Pedro The Lion ) to next weeks installment would be robbing you all of the honesty this man offers through his music, especially on “Hard To Be” off of Curse Your Brances (2009); so better late than never. At 6:24 in length, especially considering that this is his debut as a solo [...]

By Alex Brenner Although I must say 2012 has been pretty good musically so far, I always find myself digging up some older records. When I say older I'm talking about late 902s and up, not the classics. Talking with fellow A-Lister Rube, the other night we did a little reminiscing and it got me thinking about some great records of the past. The ones where you say "Oh man, I have not heard that in forever!" I do listen to tons of new music too, however, these are some you may have forgotten about or [...]

Pulling off Christmas songs is not an easy thing to do. According to one study , holiday themes make for some of the most unappealing music ever . New Christmas songs are usually pretty horrible and worthless, and covering the classics that we've all heard a million times just seems pointless most of the time. But this kind of talk is for the grinches. Every now and then, a band gets it right, and since it's Christmas, we've put together a few holiday songs that we actually enjoyed. From Zooey in a little red dress doing [...]

The holiday season is upon us (also basketball season, finally). But mostly, it's the season of ugly sweaters, drunk uncles, and, if you're a teenager, enough gift cards to paper your walls because nobody knows what to get you. We here at The Wild Honey Pie are better at Christmas shopping than your great Aunt Mildred, though. We put together a holiday playlist full of classics and indie favorites that will keep your earbuds warm when the weather outside starts to get frightful. There's no better soundtrack to accompany the decking of halls, the nogging of eggs, [...]
David Bazan remains earnest and eager.

Quiet Company are recording a series of covers of their favorite artists, and this one happens to be one of my favorite artists as well. David Bazan / Pedro The Lion played a huge part in the development of my taste in music, and "When They Really Get To Know You They Will Run" is one of my favorite tracks. Watch Quiet Company do it justice here, then head over and join their Patronism site to check out the rest.
