We’re drawing closer to our first birthday show at Bug Jar here in Rochester, and it’s kind of got me on edge. I feel like there’s a lot to be done, but when I think about it, I don’t know what that “lot to be done” actually is. So, either I’m blissfully ignorant of all [...]

Dave Bazan performs "Bad Diary Days" - 1/08/10 in a Seattle Living Room These are the songs, bands, and sounds that I've started off my 2010 with. Lots of new bands I'd never listened to before 2010, many who I think we'll be sharing much of the year with. Take a listen and maybe, just maybe, [...]

It’s Hard to Find a Friend meegeven? I Have Found a Friend [...]

A sweet drone commences on the lead out track of Postdata’s self titled debut, and the listener is whisked away into a dreamland of fallen stars and debris. The first solo album for the Nova Scotia based artist and Wintersleep member Paul Murphy, the album bares resemblance to Wintersleep’s own debut, but hearkens more to a stripped down, ‘lo-fi’ sound, comparable to early Iron and Wine, Pedro the Lion or Elliott Smith; maybe a little less brooding though and instead more contemplative. There is a distinctly folk/roots/country vein running through certain songs on this recording as well, which [...]

I'm not a big one for hymns, but there's something about 'Be Thou My Vision' that I just love. I came across this 2003 live version by Pedro The Lion the other day and it's really quite lovely. Be Thou My Vision (Traditional Irish Hymn) - Pedro The Lion I think the best rendition though is by Van Morrison, and it appears on his 1991 album Hymns To The Silence . It's a [...]

So the big day is finally here. Since I'm writing this on the eve of Christmas Eve, I can't honestly say exactly what I've done today but if the past few years are anything to go by, I've received my gifts by now and I'm busy helping my mum and my sisters make good food in the kitchen. Every now and then I'll nick outside to field a ball or two during our neverending game of backyard cricket while the fellas hover around the barbeque checking the lamb and putting together various toys/bikes/swingsets. I make mixtapes for my [...]

PURCHASE | WEBSITE David Bazan's bio was one of the most enjoyable things I've read in a long time. It explains a lot about what happened from the release of Winners Never Quit by his old band Pedro The Lion to the release of his new album Curse Your Branches . Regardless of his shortcomings (or to some, lack there of) Bazan's latest effort is surprisingly ambitious and resurrects my love of his song writing. It looks [...]

This is one of those anomaly songs where a notoriously shy and shoegazy band gets all tough for a second and it actually works. It reminds me of artist Jeffrey Brown who drew comics like Every Girl Is The End Of The World For Me and Miniature Sulk which were super emo stories where the main character is a big pussy. After getting a ton of shit for it, one day he came out with a zine called Be A Man , where he took the same stories and made the main character the exact [...]

A conversation between Rabins and Bazan about faith and art and the intersection of the two.

On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me, two turtle doves... and a whole bunch of Christmas MP3's. One of those songs is Low's "Just Like Christmas." It's probably my favorite non-traditional Christmas song, so (over the course of these twelve days) I'll give you a few different versions of it. Is it snowing where you are yet? Pedro the Lion Tour EP '04 (Jadetree) Dave takes a rare stab at Thom Yorke's yodel on this cover that's parked at the end of a rare 'live in the studio' album. And I know what you must be thinking, why is his name Dave and not Pedro. My assumption is that Pedro is his pet lion, the one he rides around with. Which would instantly make him about 40% more He-Man than the average man. Now to just work on his hair, any hair. And maybe some of the gut. And the prophet-like [...]

Filed under: News , New Music It looks like the ' New Moon ' soundtrack isn't the only compilation getting a little help from Death Cab for Cutie 's Ben Gibbard this fall. Gibbard has reportedly signed on to contribute a version of Neil Young 's 'Harvest Moon,' a song he covered played live from time to time, to the 'GIVE Seattle' charity album. The project features Seattle-based artists and benefits the Arts Corp and numerous food banks. [...]

When Pedro the Lion broke up a couple years ago, I figured it was more a function of just general disagreements between band members rather than something larger. See, it turns out that David Bazan felt like he couldn't continue the band anymore as he was experiencing a crisis of faith. He had also started drinking quite a bit, and given the very Christian nature of Pedro the Lion, it became necessary for him to take some time away from music in general. Bazan has since gotten his alcohol abuse under control, and now calling himself an agnostic, recorded an [...]
The David Bazan Band ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth [In August, Abbey of Sound on the Sound sat with David Bazan for four hours for a feature story on Bazan and his new album 'Curse Your Branches' for Sound Magazine's final issue. If you’re unaware of my penchant for David Bazan’s music, you can read about it here; I won’t rehash it this afternoon. Of Mr. Bazan’s entire catalogue, I’d have to rank this track in my personal Top 5. The song is told from a modern point of view, but it’s actually ...
