One of the most unfortunate injustices of life is how the things that offer the most pleasure, if only fleetingly, often do so much damage. No wonder the words "guilty" and "pleasure" get along so well. That goes double (preferably of vodka, or tequila) for drinking, a seemingly endless fountain of pleasure the night of and torturous hell the morning after. Thankfully, the simple pleasures of drinking songs are healthier, and they can continue indefinitely, as long as you want to press "repeat." Country music would dominate any list of the best ones (and where else could [...]

"You, you stuck around, You stuck around, You stuck around, Until you got me And then, and then, you dropped me" -- from "Dull Tool" by Fiona Apple Not too long ago, over the course of listening to "Dull Tool," Fiona Apple's This Is 40 soundtrack contribution, about a half-dozen times, I zeroed in on the lyrics at 0:47 and wondered, has Apple been dating an Argentine guy? The type of dating behavior she sings about in "Dull Tool" is so Argentine, rampant among both gay and straight guys in [...]

"People don't change. They just get older." This morning I quoted General Hospital 's iconic Luke Spencer in an email to a friend in which I was trying to explain why sex with an ex is best when it ends there. If you broke up with him, or her, for a reason, chances are that reason hasn't stopped being an issue just because the sex was great. It was probably great because it was so familiar and comforting, so if things haven't really changed in bed, why make the leap to thinking they'll change [...]

Houston noise rock outfit Indian Jewelry returned last week with their sixth studio album, Peel It, via The Reverberation Appreciation Society. The follow-up to 2010′s Totaled was recorded after the band spent some time living in New York earlier this year, during which leaders Erika Thrasher and Tex Kerschen became parents. In an interview with Free Press Houston, Kerschen remarked how their daughter “brought him back” to a more centered, musically-focused place after being “spoiled” by the every day tediousness of life on the road. Peel It is out now via Reverberation Appreciation Society. Read [...]

Indian Jewelry 's latest LP Peel It was released this week via The Reverberation Appreciation Society, and you can now stream it in its entirety. "We don't do genres. We're not a psych band nor an industrial band nor what have you. Never were," says Tex Kerschen. This album is mostly the sound of electric guitars running through amps, but we've done shows without guitars too. We’re barely a band by the usual definition. But we are dedicated people and we have ideas about music and we've been working to realize those ideas for [...]

When I was a kid growing up in Florida, people used to always talk about how the United States was a great big melting pot. Some preferred to describe it as more of a tossed salad -- a combination of unique flavors that didn't quite blend into one so much as co-existed separately and (occasionally) harmoniously -- but the idea was pretty much the same. The U.S. is a country that was built by immigrants, disparate groups who came to the so-called new world for disparate reasons, whether they be social, economic or religious, by air, by [...]

As a black man, I can be overly sensitive when it comes to my skin -- not the quality of it (as they say, unfortunately, black don't crack ), the color of it. Usually, though, I'm certain that my righteous indignation is justified . Such was the case 20 years ago, when my friend Rex made one of the most insulting racial comments I've ever heard that didn't include the word "nigger." One of the reasons why I found what Rex said [...]

Guess which search words I used to find this photo online? I also arrived at pics of Margaret Thatcher, Ayn Rand, David Hasselhoff and the Quaker Oats guy! Can you tell a lot about a blog by the search words that people use to get there? Lord, I hope not! On any given slow afternoon, I might try to perk things up by checking out how people are getting here. I'd like to think it's to read another point of view on the latest developments in pop culture, or to [...]
An Alexi Helligar creation "Love is a battlefield," the great Pat Benatar once sang. But 28 years later, where is the love? Where is the romance and the potential for finding it? True romance, not romantic behavior as a means to an end (sex). It's probably not at DJ Station in Bangkok, Glam in Buenos Aires, the Peel in Melbourne, nor in any bar, club, dance floor or online-dating forum I've wandered into or onto in the last five years. Chances are [...]
Today is perfectly beautiful. The sun is warm without being hot, the sky is blue and there is a slight breeze. All week the temperature will be in the low 702s. I doubt it gets much better than this. My right arm is peeling, a souvenir from my Ghanaian journey. On the way up-country to Tamale, I got quite the sunburn. I told Thomas, my driver, I had to sit backwards all the way to Accra. He told me I would be uncomfortable. Every now and then I run into a day when I have absolutely [...]

Memphis native Ryan Peel melds modern pop sensibilities with an old-school soul sound. His original compositions are embedded with vocal stylings worthy of Al Green’s greatest hits, and his drumming skills are evocative of the circa-1960s Stax studio technique made famous by the legendary Al Jackson, Jr. Yet at 23, Peel is no mere revivalist – his songs are punctuated by a modern, urban slant that plays on hip-hop and southern rap. A riveting bandleader, Ryan holds down both percussion and vocal duties, relying on guitarist [...]

Though I like to think of myself as a free spirit with an appetite for adventure (if not quite destruction), wanderlust aside, I'm pretty much a creature of habit. My brother once described my life as being "like clockwork," and I hated to admit that he was right. When I was living in New York City and Buenos Aires, my food cravings were so predictable that whenever I called any of the three places from which I regularly ordered delivery food, whoever answered the phone could usually recite my request before I had a chance to. Yes, that's right. I'll [...]

A post inspired/reminded by Football and Music and Sweeping The Nation ... and countless other great blogs. This is my contribution to marking John Peel's passing in 2004 with a Peel Session track is - well, I've cheated. I had a few choices, so why not post 'em all? ' I Don't Want To Be Friends With You ' - Shop Assistants - Peel Session 1986 ' Hung Over As The Oven In Maiden Vale ' - Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Peel Session 1998 [...]

I' m back in Buenos Aires after six weeks in Australia, and once again, I'm doing that thing I do where I idealize a vacation way too hard immediately after the fact. It's exactly what happens when a beautiful romance ends too soon. Never mind that your now-perfect ex snored, dropped crumbs all over the apartment and pissed on the toilet seat every single time. Suddenly, he's the best man in the world. This time, though, I think that my idealized recollections are pretty dead accurate. Yes, a few nutcases entered my orbit while I was in [...]

Coco Chanel, Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs were/are all brilliant, egomaniacal, eccentric loons who tapped into the collective unconscious and extracted precisely what humanity needed. Taavo Somer is no different. One of the architects behind Freemans, he spawned the legendarily louche and groovy restaurant in a back alley of the Bowery. Somer delivered a tongue-in-gaunt-cheek, farm-to-table menu in a restaurant-cum-lounge-cum-hips ter-recruitment-camp dressed in rugged yet chic décor involving lots of dead things meant to evoke ribald, rip-roaring life. The cocktails earn their moniker with peacocking, sexy ingredients; the music, even when it isn’t self-consciously post-mod [...]

Dustin Wong - Breezy Comfort Compilations only interest me if they do 1 or more of the following: A) Introduce me to new bands while incorporating bands I already know and like, B) Have exclusive songs by great bands that I won't find elsewhere, or C) Generally have a cool "mixtape" feeling. GREAT NEWS. Peeling accomplishes all 3 in spades. Before I go any further, I need to press upon you just how fucking PUMPED [...]

Just wanted to let you know about a blow-out next Friday, July 31st, at Bill Baird's new east side studio, Baby Blue. Peel singer/guitarist Josh Permenter has decided follow in Doug Sahm's footsteps and move on out to San Francisco for a stretch, so this will be Peel's last show for a good while. As with any proper send-off, there will be kegs (plural). Peel's friends {{{Sunset}}} and Little Stolen Moments will also be performing. The shin-dig gets rolling around 9pm.
