Now that the warm weather has finally thawed New York's frozen core and melted away everyone's collective doldrums, it's time for the city's countless music festivals to start popping up, and one of them – perhaps one of the city's most unique – is about to hit this Thursday night. The Brain-Cave Festival , now in its third year and taking place at Europa in Greenpoint from April 11 - 14, bills itself as something of a music and multimedia extravaganza, and will feature a ton of NYC acts like Hooray for Earth , Peelander-Z , [...]

Peelander-Z are not an easy band to describe. They refer to themselves as "Japanese Action Comic Punk hailing from the Z area of planet Peelander." That says more about their persona than their sound, and I'll come back to that. Stylistically, the band plays a pretty no-frills, fast, high-energy old school flavor of punk rock. Their music is a lot of fun and it's solidly entertaining, if not really boundary-pushing. The music isn't the reason you HAVE to check out a Peelander-Z show though; it's the show . Imagine one part Aquabats (and perhaps a bit of their brainchild [...]

![THE GREAT GOOGA MOOGA RECAP [PHOTOS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4305987_lg.jpg)
Photo Credit: Karp I’ve said that The Great Googa Mooga reminded me of a huge gelatinous monster, and after attending, it turns out I wasn’t entirely off base. Thousands flocked to Prospect Park with high hopes for this unique music/food expo - the food vendors taking part all looked delicious, the music line-up seemed solid, and the weekend forecast was sunny, all ingredients for a fun weekend in the park. And I did have some serious fun. Charles Bradley put on an otherworldly performance, [...]

“Food is the new rock ‘n roll.” - Justin Warner, chef at Do or Dine “A knife, a fork, a bottle and a cork /That’s the way we spell New York.” - Escort, “Cocaine Blues” “You’re going to what?” The Great Googa Mooga doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but “music," “food," and “festival” do, and that’s about all I needed to tell people about the eponymous inaugural festival this weekend in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. If that wasn’t enough to win over the skeptics, I broke it down by the numbers: 75 [...]

It has been a while since the last time I shared a show from the DNA Lounge , a nightclub located in San Francisco, CA. They were actually shut down and remodeling for a while. I was happy to see Sunday night that not only are they back open but Japanese action comic punks from space Peelander-Z were playing a show there! A big thanks to the DNA Lounge for continuing to share their live shows via a [...]

Godfathers of Japanese rock 'n' roll Guitar Wolf are legends. Their full-throttle sound is astounding, but it almost plays second fiddle to the sheer cool the trio projects.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

St. Patty's Day marked my final day in Austin. Although I forgot to wear green, I still maintained a festive attitude as I headed "uptown" to the Victory Grill for an outside show hosted by Sol Collective, highlighting several multi-cultural artists, including Zuzuka Poderosa and Los Rakas . A very far walk to the Auditorium Shores, I arrived to see the final half of Shiny Toy Guys . Following the dance-pop troupe, Austin's infamous funky dance-blues group, The Bright Light Social Hour , had the honor of supporting legendary act, The Cult, who are still churning [...]

To anyone who's ever seen Peelander-Z perform, it's pretty much pointless to describe it; you know what you're in for. For those who haven't yet seen them, suffice it to say that it's a hell of a lot of fun. Fun that includes dance parties ("Mad Tiger!"), baseball, limbo contests, squid costumes, human bowling, wacky headgear, a special appearance by Peelander Silver on saxophone and several other assorted hijincks. All of this adds up to make pretty much one of the most high energy, theatrical, and downright goofy shows you can see. And fun, did I mention the fun? [...]

One year ago one of the coolest places on the planet was struck by a devastating earthquake and an even worse tsunami. In the months since then the country of Japan has been pulling itself back together and looking toward the future. I posted about the tragedy with a Gackt mp3 after it happened, including a breathtaking photo of the tsunami breaching a wall on the coast of Miyako City. This is the same location today. This anniversary seems [...]
I've spent so much time talking about Peelander-Z's live show that it's only fair I should give a little more time to their studio work. I doubt they'll argue if I said that their albums probably come second in their mind to their live show. However, that doesn't mean they can't still be fun. "Star [...]
