From Harlem to Dalston, Mykki Blanco is becoming something of an omnipresent. Or rather, the essence of Blanco is this infinite as dense Yank accents enrobed in sarongs float around the corner of Truman's Road; Barrett's Grove. She (the gender into which the artiste is most intimately assimilated, as I'm insistently assured by her seemingly somewhat anxious PR team) is the momentarily wigged figurehead of queer rap – a relatively self-explanatory genre construction entrenched in everything NYC, which also comprises the modish likes of Zebra Katz , Cakes Da Killa , Le1F , [...]
Peepholes are one man and one woman, and just released their first proper album The Overspill , a brooding descent into some dark place at the back of your mind. The duo's music is unusual - it sounds like it is recorded live and yet they are a band one associates with electronics. We wondered if it’s this struggle between control and mayhem that powers the creative juices. So, Nick Carlisle, how was it all put together? Nick: The basis of the tracks on The [...]

For a moment on Conversation we are reminded of early Human League. But we realise that whilst that era's re exploration of the mechanics of music underpins the music of Nick Carlisle and Katia Barrett, their approach is wilfully more crude. There is a playful insurgency about it. The opening track AH AH AH reveals a ’live in the room’ sound that puts Peepholes in the company of Cold Pumas weirdly. It feels progressive, like stretching out your hands in the dark. Vocals delay out in a monotone, but the electronics blink Disney-like in the [...]
Physical Therapy’s Daniel Fisher just sent in a very dreamy-sounding remix he did for Peepholes, a dark synth/drums duo from London that just put out a new full-length called The Overspill. With its commanding, German-accented ... read more

In their words, UK twosome Peepholes is the result of Katia Barrett and Nick Carlisle trading off “singing, drumming, keyboards, Kaos pad, guitar etc” duties. In our words, “etc” should include writing hooks because while noisy duos are nothing new — hell, by 2003 there was already an we-are-not-Lightning Bolt glut — noisy duos writing seductive pops songs in the guise of fuzzed-out weirdness are a different Kaos pad-toting monster entirely. Peepholes have been around the block, yes, but Katia and Nick have really started honing their craft. -- Stereogum (Band To Watch) The Overspill, released [...]

As a young middle school student, I went through the notorious metal phase. If a band’s music consisted of loud guitars, testosterone-replete vocals, and dark lyrics, I probably listened to them. Though what runs through my iPod headphones has changed a lot during the last several years, System of a Down’s self-titled debut still sticks with me. It is important to note that though it is a guilty pleasure, I don’t think it is a bad album by any means. Because System of a Down was lumped into the same category as contemporaries such as Korn and Slipknot and their [...]

We turn on the holographic projector that we nicked from Admiral Ackbar in the confusion of the Endor post-victory Orgy (so many furries!) to display the Strange Planet whose charting is our cultural rover’s ultimate purpose. We gloss over catalogues of artefacts and genealogies of sound. We identify a disturbance in the force, a void in our cartography. A mountainous and wild zone where we have in the past sent envoys well versed in the arts of diplomacy, dance and arm-wrestling, and that’s all she wrote. As Artificially Intelligent as these minions are, they are not [...]

photo by Alphan Nukan * Caligula is the title-track from London duo Peepholes ' latest EP, out via Upset The Rhythm . Calmer than some tunes on the record, it nevertheless ascends gradually - but unstoppably - to a psychedelic, panicked plane, a place where the sun never shines and our mortality can no longer be ignored. And yet, for all that it's fraught, there's also a beauty here: the beauty of honesty, of abandoning excuses. Picture The World In Signs plots a [...]

The list is the origin of culture. It's part of the history of art and literature. What does culture want? To make infinity comprehensible. It also wants to create order — not always, but often. And how, as a human being, does one face infinity? How does one attempt to grasp the incomprehensible? Through lists, through catalogs, through collections in museums and through encyclopaedias and dictionaries. There is an allure to enumerating how many women Don Giovanni slept with: It was 2,063, at least according to Mozart's librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte. We also have completely practical lists — the shopping [...]

Been wanting to use this image by TagliaMani for a while - thanks to the ever wonderful 50 Watts . Quickly (in 20JFG time*) following on from last week's post about Peepholes ' laboratory-fresh detour, Tunnels, comes the Moon Gang s remix. Combining a decaying Techno drum sequence - seemingly heard from beneath midnight-black ocean waves - with reconstructed Chi-House synth hooks, Tunnels is turned from a cyclopean night drive into something (even) more cosmic. Which you'd expect from Moon Gangs. Katia's vocal forced into a distant endless [...]

Peepholes have announced news of an upcoming LP - Caligula will come out through Upset The Rhythm on November 28. To anyone who has heard the dark electronic sounds of the Brighton/London duo before this will be good news. Those less aware of their work need simply to hear 'Tunnels' - the excellent lead single to come from the upcoming release. Peepholes - Tunnels .co.uk | SoundCloud | Facebook

Stoked by London/Brighton duo Peepholes ' latest offering "Tunnels", the leadoff single from their forthcoming full-length Caligula . This is classic cold wave, with crystal-clear analogue synth pads, totally over-the-top vocalization and staggering, absolutely relentless drum machine backing - excessive and flamboyant yet still somehow restrained and self-controlled, probably a bit like Gordon Gekko would behave after a long day of making trouble. Caligula is out November 28 via Upset The Rhythm Peepholes - Tunnels

We're all for returns at 20JFG and friends of the family Peepholes have made many, many returns to us over the years . Like prodigal siblings returning to our bleak and unforgiving farm to be subjected to biblical metaphors…remorselessly. Having lapped up their last EP on Upset the Rhythm and it's epic closer Carnivore we feel suitably prepped for the increasingly wide pendulum swings by the band, out and away from short bursts of kinetic drum/keyboard frenzy. New mini-LP Caligula opens with another long builder, a Mayan temple of an [...]

Sometimes when I see those crazed people in the street - yelling at no-one, screaming up at bare windows, having it out with the fresh air - I wonder if maybe they're the sane ones, and it's me that's mad. Maybe they're just the chosen few with flexible enough minds that they can see the ghosts, and recognise the push and pull that most of us walk blithely by. Maybe they're enlightened, and I'm stumbling around the dark. Listening to South London act Peepholes , and their mesmerising drone-out, makes me wonder all over again. (Peepholes currently have a [...]
I don't know a whole lot about the Brighton/London duo Peepholes, other than that they well, live in Brighton and London and are named Katia Barrett and Nick Carlisle. I also know that I watched this video, for 'Ladder', and there was something about it that grabbed me immediately and then I completely forgot about [...]

We close out 2010 with a series of shout outs to the great and the good that have a special bond with 20JFG. From guest writers who've put out spectacular albums to alumni that have hopped the fence and started their own labels, with this post we salute you because we love you and we kinda' feel all proud about what you've gone and done. 20JFG doesn't do nepotism. If we did you'd see through it a mile off for we would present the damning mp3 proof with every post. So, this isn't an infected zone of back slapping, this [...]
