The southeastern college town of Athens, GA, is an important destination for music, with a legacy that's as rich as it is deep and broad. In the late '70s and early '80s, Athens made an indelible mark on the global musical psyche by birthing groundbreaking bands like The B-52s , R.E.M. , Love Tractor , and Pylon , all of whom graced the stage at the famed 40 Watt Club. Despite the success of the aforementioned acts, Athens' diverse community of indie musicians working in various genres have refused to live in the past, and thus [...]

We vs the Shark are going to be playing their "last show for a very long time" on June 26 in Athens, GA. Full statement from the band's myspace page is after the jump. This was announced a few weeks ago, but I didn't really notice it until today. It's sad news, but there are always side projects . We Versus the Shark is going to play our last show for a very long time at the Georgia Theatre on Friday, June 26th as part of Athfest. The next time you [...]

Ohmpark hits Austin next week for SXSW I'm about to hit the pavement hard, so before I leave this blog mostly unattended for a few days, I figured I'd leave y'all some tunes. Plus, I have about 30 new records to listen to on this trip, so I have a feeling I'm going to move on from everything I'm listening to right now after I get back. Athens' Pegasuses-XL has released all of their first three EPs together on one album called Electro Agitators . It isn't exactly the best entry point [...]
This week on the Rind, we bring you an Athens, Georgia group who specialize in creating messy musical stews. Self confessed "local smart asses", Pegasuses-XL are a greasy gang of synth-pop ruffians that are ready to take the snob-pop world by storm with their brand new release, Electro Agitators. Taking a gander at their myspace [...]

Bambara are playing the Drunken Unicorn tonight (Wednesday) So I continue to scan through other people's year end posts and add albums to a very long list of stuff to listen to, but I'm already finding so much good new music. For instance, I just finished listening to Bambara 's self-titled album for the first time, and it blew me away. The three piece Athens, GA outfit has been playing together for about 7 years, but this is the first release from them as Bambara . I'll have more on this one upon closer inspection, [...]

Pegasuses-XL have expanded from their original duo format to a 4-5 piece since I posted them here last. This show was a CD release for their Electro Agitators , a compilation of their first 3 EPs. Track 1 - Intro Track 2 - Run The Gauntlet Track 3 - S. McCabe's Dream Track 4 - Intramurals Track 5 - The Big Haunt Track 6 - Sea Mountain Island [...]

Gainesville, FL. November 1st-2nd, 2008 The weekend before last, I rode along with Atlanta instrumental rockers Sorry No Ferrari for their performance at The Fest, a punk music festival in Gainesville, Florida. I woke up very early Saturday morning after a long Halloween night to ride along with the three fourths of the band I didn't really know, but between naps I had plenty of conversation with them about things including music, the history of the band, and barbecue. This was actually the first show with their new drummer, Jonathan Balsamo, so [...]
Good lord, I'm already tired. Quick reminders about a lot of good shows going on tonight. The Pragmatic and Ponytail are playing at the Billiken Club tonight, while the Life and Times , Jovian Chorus and Echo Bravo are at the Bluebird AND We Vs. the Shark , So Many Dynamos and Pegasuses-XL are at Cicero's. Boss. I scribbled about the Pragmatic here and here , while we preview the Ponytail show right here . We Vs. the [...]
The Good: Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - "Ice Cream Truck"; I'm not sure if this is a new tune from Casiotone but I heard it for the first time today and I'm absolutely loving it. It's quiet and has a pretty, simple melody that I find to be a perfect setting for such a nice pop song. Really good tune. Grade: B Fiasco - "Steve Herman"; The young guys of Fiasco are leaving the vocals out on

It took me a while to get into them, but I have totally fallen in love with the Athens, Georgia outfit, We Versus The Shark . If you haven't picked up their latest album, Dirty Versions , you are seriously missing out. They are able to combine bravura with brilliant song writing. They rock out harder than most bands, but still keep their work artful. They have also been releasing a cover song for each month of the year for free here at Quote Unquote Records , that will be put together as an album [...]

A grab-bag of ideas that don't ever coalesce into a whole.

"Where did time go" was the motto of that week: following the lateness pattern initiated the previous week, I ended up missing most shows. Tue. 03/04 I was pretty thrilled to hear that the HEAP (ex HEAP project) was playing at Caledonia, along Diet Rock Stars and Kenosha Kid . For once however, the show was early and on time, with HEAP opening, so they were already done by the time I showed up. Pity, for I'm a [...]

No, I didn't vote (I'm not allowed to in the States), no I didnt' get to eat any bugnes , but I let the good times roll by attending a show in the Hidden Hamster , a famous DYI venue a few blocks away from my place. Christopher's Liver opened the evening. I don't have to introduce them if you leave in Athens. If you don't, Christopher's Liver is a duo of very kind people, Christopher Ingham on guitar, Laura Swindall on [...]
