I just re-watched the Vinyl documentary with Nicci yesterday, and burnt a copy of it to CD for one of my bosses, so of course I feel compelled to speak about record collecting today. I'm not going to discuss the process of acquiring new albums, or the analyze the psychology of someone who attempts to fill holes in their life with material possessions. I'm going to rant about how more and more bands and record labels are engaging in "limited edition" releases as a last-ditch effort to make dwindling audiences more greatly appreciate their recorded output. Meet Spot. Spot is my newest friend. If you click on that picture, you can see a bigger version. Spot lives inside the STOP sign at the end of the street. At night, Spot comes out and hangs upside down for a few hours. I see Spot doing its thing whenever I park on the corner, and I always try to say hello and take a picture of it for my friends and family -- just to let them know how it is doing. I don't know of Spot is a boy or girl because I respect its privacy. I [...]

Pelican - City Of Echoes ( Hydrahead ) What should have been finely executed instrumental rock is spoiled by perhaps the worst drummer ever.
Langerado just released the schedule today and it looks pretty good. Here is my personalized schedule so far. If you are still on the fence whether to go to this one, I'm gonna go through some of the smaller acts that I'm really excited about. The first band on the "Swamp Stage" is right here from Altanta, Dead Confederate . I believe they are going to be one of the ATL bands that get big nationally by the end of this year (they were handpicked to open for R.E.M. at SXSW), because their [...]
Keeping with tradition, it's time for my favorite albums and EPs of 2007. This list is culled from every album I listened to this year and the ones I liked the most are represented here. If you have followed my mixes for any extended period of time, you should be able to guess most of the albums that will appear on here. Enjoy! LPs: Pela - Anytown Graffiti My favorite [...]
If you haven't noticed, Joe has been M.I.A. this week with a pretty serious illness. The good news is that he is finally recovering and was just cleared by the doctor, so he should be back in circulation by next week. Anyway, I wanted to do more of a rock infused mix this week to help him get his energy back. Enjoy! High On Fire, who are currently wrapping up their tour with Mono, Panthers, and Coliseum, will be conquering Europe this winter with Chicago's Pelican before returning stateside for the second leg of their massive Death is this Communion World Tour, this time with support from A Life Once Lost and Saviours. New Wax William Burroughs argued about the end of words in the 80s, noting that we had "reached the end of what could be done with words." Yes, he wrote about reaching the end of words, but perhaps his point is still valid. [If you're not the bookish sort, you can hear him ramble on about similar topics on Material's 1989 release, Seven Souls]. To be sure, a number of legitimate groups occupy the "post-rock" genre, including identifiable names like Sigur Ros and Explosions [...]

Last night was Chicago instrumental metal (instrumetal if you will) legends Pelican's first ever Sydney show and it was all it could have been. Actually, it was a little strange to see only four people on stage - on record the music sounds like it should have been made by a cast of thousands, standing on an icy lake and all playing minor variations on the same riff. Not mere mortals, surely. Pelican were the first proper metal band I ever got into and it was an easy step for two reasons: 1. No metal vocals. [...]

"March to the Sea" by Pelican which clocks in at 11:37 That's it: Fire the reviewer. Though it's a problematic if long-standing personal complaint, Pitchfork critics have consistently prevented the Chicago-birthed music site from being as transcendent as they've long been touted. In their review of Pelican's third album , City of Echoes , it's worse than it's ever been, largely because it seems that the excellent and consistently developing oversight of the editors at Pitchfork is better now than it has ever been. The compositions and articles [...]

A Delicate Sense of Balance - Pelican Just a quick run through the world of politics - or at least what small part of it I've noticed over the past few days. * * * I posted about the situation in the Horn of Africa the day after Christmas last year, and suggested it had all the makings of a major crisis. It hasn't quite turned out that way, at least in the short run, with the Ethiopian attack quickly routing the Islamic Courts Union. The passage of time, however, has [...]

Was ein Brocken! Klasse! So I went to see Urge 's night of metal at Bowery with Preistbird, Earth and Pelican on Tuesday. And did it fuckin' rock. The night started out with Priestbird (ex Tarantula AD). They were mostly instrumental with a killer drummer and cellist. Really great. Check out some pictures at the Fader HERE and check out the doubleneck bass / guitar combo.. Pictures below. [...]

Got a welcome chance to hit the Bowery last night for a show featuring Priestbird, Earth and Pelican, aka, enough moody instru-metal to grow me some white-girl dreads. The show was presented by MTV Networks' digital download service URGE as part of their Urge Nights series . The flyer billed this as "ambient metal" so I set myself up for trancey thrash, a la Dust Brothers meets Massacra, but what I got was even better. I won't even try to dissect the delicate boundaries between the various strains of black/dark/doom/drone/ambient/ industrial instrumental hodgepodge. But (deep thought [...]

Friday, July 13 th to Thursday July 19 th . This is the special lo- fi , art-punk, noise-rock, post-rock spectacular edition of Where To Rock It. If you're lucky enough to be in the city of Cleveland this week (and believe me, with this lineup, you are lucky), you're going to be treated to some of the best noisy, arty, experimental jams in the scene today. It's a week of shows that begs for a few extra pair of ear plugs, as well as liberal usage of your company's sick time. [...]
This is how you get the most bang for your recorded buck. SXStereogum alum What Made Milwaukee Famous put out Trying To Never Catch Up in '04, had a Barsuk re-release in '06, and now present us with this spooky/spoofy clip for the lowercased standout "idecide." Puppeteer and filmmaker Toben Seymoure is the man behind the specter-acle and has succeeded in making us long for a trip to Disney World for the first time since 10th grade (late bloomers here, plus that ride is the shit).
