by teepoo Released last October, Penny Black's Harbour was supposed to be the soundtrack to autumn. There's something about this that seems to stop time a bit and I found it perfect for today's rainy day. There is something about this that also screams east coast Canada which of course is appropriate considering the band is from Saint John, New Brunswick. Just like summer summons sunshiny pop, and spring is all about blooming anthems, Autumn demands autumnal music. A brisk yet sunny Saturday morning in November just isn't complete without a record that is refreshing, ebullient, even, to set the tone for the start of a weekend. Strange, then, that Penny Blacks ' debut full-length, Harbour , is just that record, considering that it's songs are essentially borne from a bad break-up experienced by songwriter Jason Ogden. I wouldn't wish his pain and suffering on anyone (okay, maybe this one person...), [...]

If you're a regular hill reader, you likely already know that we think The Company House is one of Halifax's finest venues, and as such, it's the perfect place to hear Jason Ogden (under the Penny Blacks moniker) perform songs from his new album Harbour . Luckily this is exactly what will happen tonight, as Jason will perform at the CoHo along with Halifax's Laura Peek and fellow NB'er Adam Mowery. Those familiar with the Saint John music scene have likely heard Ogden's name before, as he's a veteran of many [...]

I've got some feelers out to a couple different bands for new music to share with you on Songs:Illinois. But if it was a race to get back to me quickest than the Penny Blacks have won the medal. Penny Blacks are a band from Saint John, New Brunswick who straddle a couple different genres. On a song with cello and acoustic guitar (like "Only Good Enough") you'll hear a bit of americana, but on others ("Bitter Bruisers Society") you might hear hints of Joe Jackson (hey, I liked Joe Jackson!) in the power pop [...]
Saint John, New Brunswick band Penny Blacks released an EP back in April called Gold Standards that, in the words of the band's front man, Jason Ogden, promised "catchy songs" that "represent an effort on my part to create something more classic, songcraft-wise". To that end, the EP delivers in spades. The seven-piece has pieced together five songs that careen from classic country ("Your Wedding Ring") to experimental folk-pop (the absolutely stunning "Splinter Kiss") without stumbling. The EP format is perfect for just such an exercise, as it offers the greatest diversity [...]

Well now, it's the 23rd of December, who wouldn't want more Christmas music? Well I'm sure there are plenty of people that don't, but it's pretty much all I have for you today. But don't despair, as you might expect, it's not your average Christmas music. Today we've got an original Christmas song from The Dudes called Don't Diss Christmas , a take on the beloved Fairy Tale of New York from beloved Haligonian acts In-Flight Safety and Jenn Grant , and a version of the ubiquitous Macca classic Wonderful [...]

We've only released three installments of the Great Canadian Mixtape project, but we've already starting compiling a list of oversights. One such omission is New Brunswick's Penny Blacks . Originally just one man - Jason Ogden - Penny Blacks has evolved into a full band effort, and when Ogden began augmenting his guitar strums with some drums, piano and and strings, the songs took off. This little four song EP ( Regret, Regret ) is a perfect appetizer to introduce you to his songwriting and get you hungry for more. He's an engaging song [...]
