Here's a name we (or, at least, I) haven't heard in a while: Nouela Johnston. The former front-woman of Mon Frere gives us her self-titled solo debut under the moniker People Eating People this week and it includes the joyous pop romp "All The Hospitals". The track finds People Eating People dishing out precocious percussion, hints of bouncy jazz piano, and vocals slightly reminiscent of something between Regina Spektor, and... err... a better version Regina Spektor. People Eating People is the solo project of Seattle's Nouela Johnston. People Eating People is the solo project of Nouela Johnston(formerly of the band Mon Frere). It's hard to listen to this self-titled debut record and not immediately think of artists like Regina Spektor and Tori Amos - you know, other talented girls who rock the piano. Not that is a bad thing, I am just thinking out loud here. This is an album that is definitely worthy of standing on it's own two legs though. This was the kind of show that brings people in from outside to see where that voice is coming from. Never mind that Ólöf Arnalds is also cozy and personable on stage, interacting with her very appreciative audience by describing the meanings behind her songs and occasionally asking, “So, how are you doing?" Arnalds's vocal range is significant; she can hit clear high soprano notes, and swoop to contralto without losing power or volume.
