For the second year of the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival , curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, the focus was a wider sample of indie music and short film. The small three-day fest at BAM included artists selected by and connected to the brothers, like their own house show, in a beaux-arts palace. The bands, mostly from Brooklyn, were an eclectic mix--electro, folk, noise rock and funk met classical and jazz. The Roots, Solange and TV on the Radio headlined. Several up-and- coming artists played the BAM café, serving as the second stage. Acts [...]

Celebrating the release of their sophomore album, Hummingbird , Local Natives were welcomed into Music Hall of Williamsburg last night for their first of three sold out New York City shows. Opening act People Get Ready was outstanding, a percussion-heavy guy-girl combo that really packed a punch. Their song "Windy Cindy" hooked an unsuspecting audience and kept their undivided attention. Local Natives was most certainly not outdone though. They played a long set filled with tracks off both their albums - from the [...]

A Deli favorite (and on the cover of our current issue), Brooklyn indie pop quartet People Get Ready has announced a tour dates this April with Deerhoof. Starting in Chicago, the bands will be playing shows in the northern states, reaching over to Michigan and making their way back east, with their last show in Philly. Unfortunately none of the shows are in NYC, but lucky for us People Get Ready will be playing next week (2.08) at our winter issue launch party at Mercury Lounge. - Lucy Sherman

People Get Ready were one of the break out hits of this year's CMJ, and it looks like Deerhoof may be bringing up another level on the ladder of indie rock by bringing the band with them on an upcoming tour this April. People Get Ready will be playing a few shows in New York in advance of the tour with a Brooklyn show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on February 1 and Mercury Lounge in Manhattan on February 8. The full schedule is posted below. People Get Ready tour [...]

A Sunny Day in Glascow: People Get Ready by People Get Ready

Welcome to the first in a series of year-end retrospectives by contributor Joe Waslin that aim to celebrate the best of 2012 in indie music, with a particular focus on artists that we feel have not received as many accolades on other blogs and publications as they deserve. NEON PISS These Bay Area punks released their self-titled debut in May on Deranged Records, the same label that formally brought you Toronto punk rockers Fucked Up and Brutal Knights. [...]

People Get Ready - Windy Cindy I was stumped on really what to write about these BK-residents. I just know I really like the song. Maybe it’s the underlying asian chordal tones. Maybe it’s the harmonies, you know how I am a sucker for harmonies. It’s probably the blur between pop and progressive. I say that because it’s bouncy as all get out but with these chord progressions that in any other order would sound like a jazz composition student trying too hard. As if Dirty Projectors tilt the needle towards the pop thresh hold [...]
