Last Sunday we were invited out by CBG123 the annual JAZZ AND REGGAE FESTIVAL on the Campus of UCLA, with Erykah Badu and De La Soul as the two headliners we knew it was going to be bananas! The Jazz and Reggae festival is the ONLY all student run festival in LA that has consistently pulled 20-30k students for the past 6 years. With artists such as Erykah Badu, De La Soul, Mavado, Leela James, Peetah and Mojo Morgan, its no wonder why people flood the UCLA campus to see this show. [...]

In honor of the Memorial Day weekend, we took a very small poll asking a few friends to give us their ideal summer song . You know, the kind you would want to hear if you were outside driving around right now without a care in the world. Then we narrowed it down to seven eleven (an arbitrary number, who knows, it still may expand). So, here are seven eleven summer classics from Sister Nancy , Pavement , The Pharcyde , Donovan , Dizzee Rascal , [...]

Here's another pretty awesome music website that let's you create playlists you can share with you friends. It's called GrooveShark.com and it's got a pretty big library of music. It allows you to upload your own music so you can login from anywhere in the world and have all of your music. It also allows you to search for music and play full songs and albums. The way this works reminds me very much of Napster (the original Napster) since it seems like the search results are based on what people have uploaded. This is probably why GrooveShark [...]

"Coachella exists in two time zones: the event itself and its digital afterlife," wrote Ben Ratliff in his coverage of the festival for The New York Times . "The second zone, on cameras and blogs and Twitter and video-sharing sites, comes a heartbeat after the first, like a rockabilly slap-back echo. We agree with this assessment, and our Twitter followers probably do too, so rather than try to thrust ourselves into the "second zone," we figured we'd dedicate our coverage to a "third zone," the one in which memories reign supreme... For many [...]

People Under the Stairs - Acid Raindrops Suffering from severe sleep debt, I sincerely doubt that I am in any shape to express in words the glorious experience that was Coachella 2009. It gets better every year. :) So while I zone out in class and go climb rocks with what little energy I have left, you can start holding your breath for some notes on my trip that I'll put up later. …Or you can go out and do illegals. [...]
Figured I'd try this out and see how it goes. It gives me a chance to give some throwback tracks that you haven't listened to in a while that are just amazing. As most of you know, iTunes put in a feature called Genius that tries its best to match songs to whatever song you'd like and makes those songs into a playlist. I was listening to Dat New New from Kid Cudi and I decided to try the Genius button, most of the time Genius doesn't work on relatively new songs but I tried it anyway. The playlist [...]

Due to budgetary constraints, Rollo & Grady will not be attending tomorrow's festivities in Indio. If I were attending the event, I would catch the shows listed below. Truth be told, I most likely wouldn't roll in until People Under The Stairs set. The Black Keys is the can't miss show of the day, followed by N.A.S.A. Alberta Cross Time: 1:25pm - 2:10pm Stage: Outdoor Theatre Ryan Bingham Time: 2:20pm - 2:40pm Stage: Gobi [...]

Today in St. Paul Minnesota, the temperature is 61 degrees. Holy crap. After a winter of demoralizing length and frigidity, this beautiful weather feels even more amazing. The sun is finally warm and all of my winter layers can be left in the closet. With thoughts of summer, I've decided to post two of my favorite hip-hop songs in my library. They're from the independent Los Angeles rap-duo , People Under the Stairs . These guys are true old-school. They construct their beats using strictly old records, and never keyboards. Even better, they rap almost exclusively about enjoying life [...]

Chris Portugal and Mike Turner of People Under The Stairs Golden Voice picked some solid, but safe Hip-Hop for this year's Coachella festival. There is no bullshit bling featured on the bill. They focus on some of the best live artists out today. Public Enemy is a given, but you don't want to miss N.A.S.A, Atmosphere, Peanut Butter Wolf or LA's finest, People Under The Stairs. If I had to choose one, I would go with N.A.S.A (North American/South America). Their recent album The Spirit of Apollo features [...]

Took a day away from the virtual world yesterday....so I am posting two Coachella bands this time around...how about a hip hop two-fer. Atmosphere * 'Your Glasshouse' MP3 People Under The Stairs [...]
Bill Paxton not only mentions People Under the Stairs and Murs (around 2.20 or so), but says SWAG at least three times. Weird cultural confluence. Thanks to VegaYojimbo for spottin' this. [More after the jump...]
After what seemed like a series of odd delays and false starts, the lineup finally got released today for this year's Coachella Music Festival . It's a good one. Really good. Headlining each day are Paul McCartney on Friday, The Killers on Saturday and The Cure on Sunday (before you scoff at Friday's closer, Uncle Corey's first concert ever was Paul McCartney and he blew me away). But, fuck the top-of-the-bill. Dig down a bit, and this is a truly well-balanced, incredible show. Among those that caught my eye: [...]

Los Angeles' Finest=Best Hip-Hop Group In America I'm about four months off on praising the best hip-hop album of 2008, "Fun DMC" . But I'm still hooked on their 2002 classic "O.S.T." I will beat a dead horse, but you guys who drool over Lil' Wayne, Kanye, 50 Cent, Young Jeezy or any other of those prepackaged "rappers", expand your horizons. If you want to hear great rhymes and beats without the bling and bullshit check out People Under The Stairs' catalog. You will not be disappointed. BTW-you have [...]
A little off-topic, but: San Francisco Knights While trying to work, electro house tends to mash my head a bit. To bring things down a notch try People Under The Stairs . People Under The Stairs - Acid Raindrops / (alt)

The year 2008 found me actually buying less music than in years past, although I'm sure my wife would disagree. While 2K8 wasn't a stellar year for me musically speaking, it did have some standout moments, with some coming unexpectedly. For instance, I was sure I was going to hate the 808s & Heartbreak album. That damn autotone has been played out this year. I had heard the lead single on the MTV awards show when Kanye premiered the song and liked it, but I wondered how he would pull off an entire album of [...]

First off, apologies for the lack of original content on my part. It's been getting hectic like Guru and The Brand New Heavies . There was an East Coast sojourn, a flurry of deadlines, and a hair-brained scheme to build the world's first mind-reading machine-which failed miserably (see photo evidence here ). Thankfully, like free lunches, Sach and Douglas have held it down like steel. Hopefully, next week will boast fresh content-in the interim, allow me to point you to my feature on People Under the Stairs that ran in this LA Weekly. As [...]

If you are not into indie-rock or don't feel like driving to Echo Park to see Darker My Love; People Under The Stairs are playing at the El Rey . I haven't seen them live before, but I dig their music. You can buy tickets here . Download MP3: People Under the Stairs - The L.A. Song Download: People Under the Stairs - "O.S.T."
