Before I get started...if you want a bucketful of some great songs then I recommend heading over to Rollo and Grady for their SXSW 'Artists to Watch' post . Really great stuff. Since the move I really haven't had too much time for exploring the inter web in search of new tunes. For the time being, it's been a pretty consistent Vinyl party. This is what's rotating on my record player. Free mp3: Local Natives - Sun Hands [...]

It always comes as a shock when a band calls it quits. The latest announcement came from Los Angeles indie outfit Pepper Rabbit, a band we covered at SubEx excited about their potential success . Pepper Rabbit's frontman Xander Singh made the announcement via Facebook : "In summation, it doesn't matter why Pepper Rabbit had to end, that will stay within the people involved. But I have to say that everyone who ever bought a record, illegally downloaded a record, came to or snuck in to one of our shows, I thank you dearly from [...]

Pepper Rabbit @ BV-CMJ showcase ( more by Amanda Hatfield ) I wrote back in October that "there's a rumor that the BV [CMJ] showcase [at Music Hall of Williamsburg] may have been Pepper Rabbit 's last show ever." Looks like that was unfortunately true. Facebook letters from Xander (who talks about how hard it is to be an indie band) and Luc (who points out he'll be drumming for Islands this spring) below... Los Angeles-based indie pop duo Pepper Rabbit must have meant something with the lyrics "the kitchen is closed" off Red Velvet Snow Ball 's single "Rose Mary Stretch", because the band has called it quits, according to their Facebook page . As frontman Xander Singh explains, “Pepper Rabbit will live on only in the realm of the 2 records and any live shows that have already been performed. There will be no more Pepper Rabbit records or shows.” He continues: “In summation, it doesn't matter why Pepper Rabbit had to [...]

Photo by David Greenwald Two years ago, one of my more trusted publicists sent over a track from a brand-new band. They were called Pepper Rabbit. "Wanted to get you the scoop," he wrote. I skimmed their EPs. "Red Wine," with its piano chords landing like brontosaurus feet, stood out immediately. Rawkblog premiered the track. In the months to come, I saw a half-dozen Pepper Rabbit shows, spun their two albums, watched them go from unknown L.A. act to openers for ascendent buzz bands and Urban Outfitters playlist darlings, [...]

Once again we're at that time , faced with the onslaught of the inevitable Year End List, when everyone offers their opinion on what was the Best album, or Best song, or Best video, or Best concert of the year. Everyone jumps at the opportunity to canonize, to rank and file, to highlight what we'll come to remember and leave behind what we'll come to forget. Some of these lists try to say "Here are the Best, period. These speak to the soul of the average, normal, objective person. They delight the most ears. They're [...]

Amazingly enough, 2011 has already come and gone, but with it came a slew of glorious, captivating records. From the return of veterans Bright Eyes , Wilco , and Death Cab for Cutie , to sophomore explosions from The Antlers , Girls , Bon Iver , and Fleet Foxes , and jaw-dropping debuts from Youth Lagoon , James Blake , You Won't , and Caveman , this has been one incredible year of music for us. Say what you will about this year versus the [...]
There are lots— lots —of end-of-year lists out there right now. I've sifted through so many lists for so many years that the very prospect of ingesting them all has become too tedious to bear. That said, there are a handful that I find to be pretty dependable every year, and that always yield at least a couple of finds for me. I've spent some time cycling through the tens (hundreds) of songs/albums on the lists below and have come away with something worthwhile from all of them. (Related, a couple of weeks [...]

BEST OF 2011 : Songs | Albums (soon) | EPs/Singles | Discoveries/Heavy Rotation | Photos A really good year! The first 40 or so are mega-jams and the latter 38 (Rawkblog loves you, baby) are still jams. I purposefully left out songs by Destroyer because I couldn't decide, so consider Kaputt represented. You can play the entire page with the handy Ex.fm player in the bottom right corner, stream the playlist on Spotify and Rdio , and download everything after the jump. [...]

This was certainly a strange Halloween week, everyone. Halloween has always been the holiday where your freak flag can hang high, but this year, too many other strange occurrences went down. Case in point, a portion of the country got hit with one of the worst early snowstorms imaginable. Yes, New England hailed to the Pumpkin Throne in 10 inches of fresh powder. It literally was a scene out of The Nightmare Before Christmas . Everybody else in the nation probably went about their usual business, but weird things were still afoot. Here at Cluster 1, things still had [...]

I don't know exactly what it is, but something about this song reminds me of Abba's " Fernando ". I'm not saying this as a bad thing at all, after all Abba was a highly successful band and hugely popular still to this day in Sweden . So when I compare Pepper Rabbit to Abba I mean it as a compliment, despite what some people may think. This one is actually just as catchy and addicting as an Abba tune though, plus I also thought it was appropriate for Halloween since they appear to have those [...]
