John Wright The last time that Pet Shop Boys were in town, it was for V Fest 2009 and while I was excited for their performance, it was more because I wanted to see their audience intersect with the Nine Inch Nails fans who were there to see Trent and company, who were playing immediately afterwards, than out of any real sort of fandom. Their show, however, blew me away with its technicolour visuals, elaborate choreography, and top-notch pop songcraft that they were easily the highlight of the weekend and, having since gotten to [...]

Pere Ubu are going out on tour and play the North Star Bar on Wednesday, September 11th. The band released Lady From Shanghai on Fire Records in January. The experimental art newavey-punkrockers are celebrating its 35th anniversary, with lead singer David Thomas as the one constant member since the band released its 1978 critically acclaimed debut album, The Modern Dance . Below, download "414 Seconds" from the band's recent album.

Photo: Michael Gallacher In keeping with their long-established abstruse persona, tonight’s Pere Ubu show in Glasgow is unsettling and hilarious in equal measure. Bandleader and founding member David Thomas is one of rock music’s great eccentrics and as a stage presence, he is always compelling. Whether it’s prowling the stage while berating his band for any mis-steps or sitting back in a hard backed chair glowering at the crowd he is the prime focal point. At times tonight's gig resembles a stand up comedy set as Thomas, clad in a [...]

Pere Ubu - "Thanks" It was so quiet you could hear the plants growing. Stretching their stalks, shuffling their leaves, and sipping their dirt. I would walk past that room, and he'd be watching the tv on mute. That high-pitched electric zeeee the only thing competing with the plants. I would walk past that room, the tv on mute, and I would try not to look in but I could never help it. Like a magnet I couldn't help it. And he was always looking at me. Always. That look that was part animal, part [...]

On the outskirts of nowhere . [...]

I'll be playing tunes this Friday at Hawthorne Theatre with my good pal, DJ Bob Ham . It's always a fun time-I mean, it is Happy Hour on a Friday. I suppose the goal will be to get things warmed up/getting people hot and bothered for the Hot Water Music show later that evening. I think we can do it. But despite what the photo to the left implies, we won't be spinning records. Instead we will be gazing into the glow of our laptops, which will likely resemble two grown men playing Battleship. Less sexy than [...]

Lady from Shanghai finds Pere Ubu bopping to the beat of their own drum, while making inroads and concessions to the world of pop culture, without ever "selling out" or sounding something unlike they are. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the groundbreaking 1978 Pere Ubu debut album, The Modern Dance. Chances are, unless you're a scholar of weird, atonal rock (avant-garage as the band, or maybe their journalists, would dub it) or a rock critic, you've probably never heard it. Pere Ubu was, and has always been, a band that has eschewed the limelight: they rarely [...]

As one of the finest bands to emerge from the initial wave of post punk, Pere Ubu were at the forefront of figuring out what should emerge from the ashes of one of rock's most influential subgenres. But having been around for four decades since its inception, Pere Ubu were at some point faced with another challenge - what, if anything, comes post post-punk? If their fifteenth album Lady From Shanghai is their definitive answer to that question, it's as curious a reply as their initial efforts ever [...]
