So ... yeah, this is what my life has come to. I'm in a new town where I have no friends - yet; hopefully that will change, as there are a lot of cool people at my new jobby - ... Continue reading ’
There we were. Gail and me. Eye to eye. Toe to toe. Penis to vagina belly (she's only 52 63). Who would crack first? Would she turn and run? Would she prematurely reach for her rape whistle? Would she rush towards me and embrace me. Could she cry into my shoulder and say, "Evan. You found me. I love you."? The answer, of course, is none of the above. After all my hours roaming the streets of New York City this week I have exactly ZERO Gail Simmons sightings about which to boast. If I'd known ahead of time that [...]

The Sundelles quite recently finished recording their first full length album. They were working with Mr. Tony Maimone (of Pere Ubu fame) at Studio G in Brooklyn . The band says it's "totally a step in a new direction, fidelity wise, but its still true to our writing style." The name of the album is Georgia Swan , and right now there are no definite plans to put the album out as the band is looking for a label to give it a proper release. The sound on the LP is definitely poppier and less [...]
Nicci sang a song in her friend's one-man show tonight. I couldn't make it in time to see her, but I did make it to Aroma Coffee & Tea for a delicious crispy chicken wrap! Then we went to her friend's house for some beers and snacks and conversation. Then we came home and watch what is now officially the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life. It's called Hanger . It's about a foetus that gets aborted via coat hanger (yes, they show the coat hanger inserted into the vagina and the baby being pulled out) [...]
Last week I watched a new documentary - I Need That Record. The film, produced, written and directed by one Brendan Toller was released in April and it documents, independently, the total collapse of the mom&pop of the music world – the independent record stores. 3000 of them shut in the US in recent years. In an exciting, [...]

Polynya (an area of open water surrounded by sea ice) sound like they're auditioning to be the 4AD house band. Orlando , with it's isolated, whispering vocals, guitars ringing with reverb, the basslines wriggling along underneath the song sounds like it's been created from a 4AD flat pack. It's not all epic shoegazing, it's not all updated Cocteau Twins and Lush for the 21st century. No there's more to Polynya than mere 4AD mimickery. Taking their cue from the source of their band name for Polynya shoegazing is merely the solid sea ice [...]
I guess she asked for this. Marilyn has been asking me to pop in and do a guest spot for A Future In Noise for some time now, and I thought that now would be as good a time as any for it. There's a certain synchronicity to it - Marilyn is back in the states after a nice long layoff of listening to post-whatever and eating terrible beef in the United Kingdom, and my own blog is back after almost a year on the bleachers. After spending the last week checking in on old friends, hacking around [...]

Three remember when it snowed a few days ago but now it's sunny and not a trace of snow to be found reasons to slide on over to the Lincoln Hall tonight... 1. This should be the classic (or lazy?) two word reason. Pere Ubu . Unfortunately, although highly influential, Pere Ubu don't have the cache of the Talking Heads or the mystique of Television despite a series of remarkable and challenging records. Maybe it's because they are from Cleveland and not New York. I mean, art rock and New York are [...]

The tenth edition of Wild Weekend already. Who knows where the time goes indeed, Sandy. But it´s on our side, right Irma? Here´s another six pack brought to you exclusively by that certain extraterrestrial who mans the shuffle function of my iPod. Phone home, dude. Time has come today. And away we go with Kevn Kinney, better known as the frontman of Drivin N Cryin. I always had a weak spot for his first solo album MacDougal Blues (´90). The title song charmingly tells of his exploits to [...]

..And they're a couple big ones. Friday, March 5th, the legendary, and I mean legendary Cleveland band, Pere Ubu will be playing the Ballroom. Then, on Saturday night, March 6th, another legend, and I assure you I'm not over-using the words legend and/or legendary, takes the stage in the Ballroom, Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators. One other show has been announced for the Beachland's anniversary weekend. This one is for the Tavern on Friday night. And while they're not quite legends, they are fixtures at the Ballroom and Tavern, and they did just release a very [...]

The Residents are masked and anonymous artists who prosecute the same visionary tradition as Pere Ubu, Negativland, Harry Partch and Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. The Residents do not communicate directly with the press, but ...
One evening in October 1952 Stanley Glickman, a young artist living in Paris, accepted an invitation from an acquaintance to join him and some fellow Americans at the Cafe Select, a popular spot among writers and artists. There, the conversation turned into a heated political debate lasting several hours. When Glickman decided it was time [...]

Yup, we missed the boat for New Years Resolutions (which are bullshit anyway), but regardless, fellow TDT writer Norwood Derr and myself are attempting to give up the tobacco tubes. Disaster, frustration, and replacement vices loom in the near future, but at least you guys get a sweet mix out of it. We have no interest in persuading you to quit too, mostly because A.) smoking really does make you look cooler and B.) we are doing this for shallow reasons including money, smelling better, and wanting to play with our new Bowflex. Needless to say, it will be an [...]

Although I've lived permanently in California since Orwellian 1984, I've been bi-coastal since the Summer of Love, dividing my time between Cali & Pennsylvania, where I grew up & graduated high school...northwestern Pennsylvania to be more exact, not far from the Ohio & New York state lines. Now, when I was coming of age, New York had 18 drinking age & Ohio had legal fireworks of the unsafe & insane variety. These facts precipitated many a back-roads adventure throughout the beautiful desolation of rural Amerika. Once musick became the driving force in my life, many Ohio sojourns revolved around live [...]

Pere Ubu - On The Surface Recently, you see some of those close to you, and trying to live up to the image constructed artificially. They live in the clothes of lies, and strive to convince the world that this is true. Many people, fraud, and the appearance of the surface enough that it does not want to know the people around them other trivialities. You have seen the negative impact that occurs when you do not match the external and internal. Unfortunately, it led to violence, as if from a cartoon. [...]

There is a fine line between too much information and too little, which makes conducting interviews a bit like a game of Russian roulette. This is especially true when your subject doesn't necessarily want to meet your questions half way. Luckily, with eccentric personalities and inflamed egos you're likely to get something candid if you just let them take the reins. This edition of Adventures in YouTubin' is dedicated to those journalists who had the good sense to bite off more than they could chew. Featured musicians include: Brad Cox, the Butthole Surfers, and more. [...]
What elements go into making a good mixtape? It's a conversation I've had with many...and something I thought about driving home from Milwaukee this afternoon. In my opinion, a good mixtape is something that creates new avenues to travel. It immediately shines a new light to someplace previously unexplored. Know what I mean? About a decade ago, my friend Paul made me a mixtape that literally took me a few years to fully digest. The mix had a few songs on it that were instantly more accessible than others. I explored those band's discographies first and when there [...]
