Completely under-appreciated but brimming with a talent that deserves to be heard by millions, Perfume Genius is reissuing his stellar debut album "Learning" with a few extra bonus tracks to make it even more worth buying. If you haven't listened to the album yet, you can do so here , and if you have you might as well just get stuck into this new tune. Whilst the song is good, I don't think it's as good as the songs on "Learning" so it was a good choice to leave it off the album. He kicks the [...]

If you didn't catch the debut album from Perfume Genius, well, you should catch the debut album from Perfume Genius. And if you seriously need further enticement, the raw and devastatingly sad album, Learning , is being reissued just a few months after its original release in order to reach the audience it missed on first attempt. The new version of Learning will also feature three new songs, "Your Drum," "Divine Faxes, " and "Dreeem", the last of which can be heard here. Here is "Dreeem" is MP3 form as well as a [...]
Perfume Genius ::: photo by Kyle Johnson For the past few years we've been lucky enough to have one of the most talented up-and-coming photographers in America contribute his thoughts on the best of the year sonically and on film. And for the past three years we've sang Kyle Johnson's praises (seriously, he's brilliant) and every [...]

Whether it's the melody or lyrics, the catchiness or repeatability, the party starter or the emotive heart tugger, a song has to make a connection with you. It has to stop your mind whirling for a moment and say -- rather, demand -- "Stop and listen!". Of the hundreds of tracks we posted (and hundreds more we listened to) this year, these were the ones we most connected with. The ones that made us stop and listen every time. A quick note on the rules we followed. Basically, like last year, nearly everything released in the year [...]

Mike Hadreas sings of his face melting away in a dream, and with the airy, distant vocals and highly emotive piano, you can almost ignore the fact that in dreams, you can literally feel your flesh dissolving, seeing it fall in loose gobs into your hands. Granted, I can't expect people to have dreams as vivid and lucid as mine – trust me, it's not as fun as it sounds – and Perfume Genius is more than likely speaking of the cross-dissolve of a movie scene change. Either way, those images pull through the heart strings he [...]

Perfume Genius' music is quiet, intimate and moving, three features which made it perfectly suited for the chapel-like hall at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The room was filled with wooden chairs, funereal candelabras and dim dramatic light, and there was little else to interfere with the natural reverb from the high, vaulted ceiling and wooden floor. Everyone was silent, even he remarked on the quietness of the room-the antithesis of a typically noisy bar where singer-songwriters are known to ply their trade and where his delicate wisps of music would have been destroyed. It was so difficult [...]

I carelessly left my computer at home in San Francisco this weekend and my parents, East Germans I'm sure of it, are reticent to allow me to download "virus harboring" software on to their brand new computer. Thus, I've sifted through the last few weeks of music I've shunted to the side with the "reserved [...]

Before the Age of Adz came out and my view of Sufjan Stevens become forever altered (in a very good way for what it's worth), I, like many people, were really looking forward to a follow up to his albums, Illinoise and Michigan. And then about a year ago I found Chris Garneau , who sounded a bit like Sufjan. And I think I've found another one. He goes my the moniker Perfume Genius. And if you're putting people in order of 'appropriate things to play at my Frat party', Sufjan is in the "Don't", Garneau [...]
