I've written before about how certain songs seem so familiar that I'm convinced we had the record around the house while I was growing up. A good example would be Perry Como's "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes," which topped the pop charts in 1952. But even though his version is the one that's familiar to me, it wasn't the only hit record of the song that year. Skeets McDonald hit the top of the country charts with his version, and it stayed there for 18 weeks! Enos William McDonald grew up in rural [...]
My friend Michelle gave me her year yesterday. She and Ralph, both friends dating from my Peace Corps days, were born the same year. I didn't hear from Ralph but Michelle responded for both of them. Happy Birthday, Michelle and Ralph.

Everybody knows that Ringo Starr left Rory Storm and The Hurricanes to replace Pete Best in The Beatles. This month, Ringo's replacement in the Hurricanes passed on at the age of 67. As a bandleader, Keef Hartley later played at Woodstock. He died on November 27. It is not very well known that boxing legend Joe Frazier , my favourite fighter of all time, was also a bit of a soul singer. Some of his stuff cashed in on his boxing background; the song featured here is a straight soul number, and it's pretty good. [...]
Take care while I'm gone! You'll all be missed!
It's amazing how many blogs are citing this as a Fugees/ Lauren Hill cover. For all that don't know, and we are surprised about this, Roberta Flack originally sand this song. It was also covered by Carly Simon , Teresa Teng , Cleo Laine , Blossom Dearie , Al B. Sure! , Carole King , Herb Alpert , Engelbert Humperdinck , Tori Amos , Alison Moyet , Eva Cassidy , Perry Como , Harry Connick, Jr. , The Jackson 5 , Mina , Anne Murray , Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '77, Luther Vandross , Colbie Caillat , Susan Boyle , [...]
Easy listening vocalist rocks out, but only momentarily Como's 1969 LP opens with a number, "Happiness Comes, Happiness Goes," that suggests the easy listening pop vocalist was late getting to a groovy party hosted by Esquivel. But after only one groovy concoction of fuzz guitars and organ, the album reverts to the light, warm pop that Mister C had been landing on the charts since the early 1940s. The album's hit was a remake of "Seattle," the theme to television's Here Come the Brides . It's upbeat harpsichord, organ [...]

MAMBO MERKS MAN DEM -Before Salsa and The Cha-Cha-Cha the kitsch sound of 19402s Mambo swept through New York. As a precursor to the various mutations of the large "Son" movement Mambo had influences from Haiti, Cuba and the South Pacific as soldiers returned from their remote ocean outposts. This is an example of a very "pop" Mambo hit by the house wives favourite Perry Como. You might want to check out Beny More and Prez Prado for some bigger, more authentic Mambos. DJ's - Drop this around 8am at a festival and see what happens. [...]

photography by purpleplaid So things have shifted a bit here and looks like I'll be posting something every Thursday (other Paper Crane Collective folks have diff days). I'm super swamped with holiday prep (work & personal) and trying to beat off a massively terrible cold that came outta nowhere, to do any of my best of 2010 but it is coming! I really love Christmas! (not for the capitalist consumer greedy side of it) Unlike the rest of the population, I actually love hearing those Christmas songs playing everywhere...I even keep my radio [...]

Perry Como is one of those singers like, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby, who will live forever. We hear them every Christmas whether we like it or not. Crosby's "White Christmas," Cole's "The Christmas Song," and Como's "There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays" still rank among the most played and best Christmas offerings. I never got the chance to meet Crosby or Cole, but was lucky enough to meet the great Mr. Como on three separate occasions. For too many years to count, my great-grandmother, Kate Spensieri, made bread and cookies for Como [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Aaron Schroeder, a music publisher, producer and prolific songwriter with more than 2,000 writing credits to his name, died at his home, the Lillian Booth Actors' Home, in Englewood, N.J. on Dec. 2. He was 83. The cause was complications from a form of dementia, according to Dale Olson, his publicist. Among Schroeder's most well-known songwriting credits is Elvis Presley 's 1960 hit, 'It's Now or Never,' a song whose melody was derived from a Neapolitan standard 'O Sole Mio.' Presley expressed interest in the song [...]

Mizzy, a pianist born in Brooklyn who started playing professionally at age 14 and became a touring act on the Vaudeville circuit, wrote several hit songs, such as 'My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time,' 'Pretty Kitty Blue Eyes' and 'Choo n' Gum,' for the likes of Dean Martin , Perry Como, Doris Day and Billie Holiday . On my way up to Paso Robles for Easter and wedding planning. Enjoy this week's mix as well as last year's Easter song post containing all the popular Easter songs that I know of. Happy Easter. Radiohead - All I Need Wedding song of the week. I'm not totally sure how this will fit. I love the song but finding the right place for it in a wedding ceremony/reception [...]

At one point I thought the Perry Como song would be my only contribution to Delaware's State Song inventory. Luckily I re-discovered the Duhks track posted below and my encyclopedic colleague Pete Marsh recommended Dolly Parton's Down From Dover. Martin Anderson from WNCW also emailed me with a tip about a bluegrass band called Front Line who apparently have a great song called Delaware but sadly I couldn't find any trace of that group. So, a fairly meager [...]
