Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. The Crapcast is so named because I am in one of the dingiest hotel rooms I have ever been in. In isn't even entertainingly bad, which would be something, just like being dressed in clothes from Marks and Spencer and being trapped inside a grey cardboard box listening to Keane's greatest hits. Anyhow, the shower was really good, and I can forgive almost any other atrocity in a hotel room, as long as the shower is hot and the pressure is good. Anyhow, I am abandoning the Hotel of Beige for a friend's house tonight, and [...]

With the help of some Brooklynite multi-instrumentalists, Justin Stiver and Justin Gonzalez worked under the moniker Pet Ghost Project and created the album Shelf Life , their most ambitious and uncompromising work to date. Shelf Life follows a loose theme of defiant dreams and crushing realities and the sound is full of noise, texture, ambience, and unexpected left turns, all of which remains highly melodic and memorable. One thing that really stands out when listening to Pet Ghost Project is the passion that goes in to creating the music. Pet Ghost Project [...]

Pet Ghost Project retain a rare quality seldom found in the creative world these days. A passion for art that requires significant sacrifice, a gamble to win, a constant struggle against time itself. For the listener though, it is evident that the sacrifice is worth the reward. Introduced to us by our friends at Ampeater , we have been lucky enough to have the band play not only our Showpaper fundraiser at Death By Audio last year, but in our very own backyard for [...]

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, Justin Stivers started the Pet Ghost Project musings as a basement recording experiment around 2003. Despite comparisons to Neutral Milk Hotel, Animal Collective, Pavement and Tortoise (to name a few), the band has successfully carved out an endearing niche in a dark corner of the musical world that is entirely theirs. A former member of The Antlers (bassist on Hospice ), Stivers has recorded and produced 6 albums to date. Recently acquiring the help of fellow multi-instrumentalists Jacob More, Justin Gonzales and Chris Patin (member of Austin's [...]
After leaving The Antlers to focus his own work, Justin Stivers has finally put his solo career into motion, with two full albums sitting under his belt. The first release will be his own winter variations EP, set for release on September 14. According to Justin, " winter variations is a product of schizophrenia. After nearly a year of tracking and mixing Pet Ghost Project ’s newest LP Shelf Life (set for release in 2011), focus meandered. The slow process of releasing an album just wasn’t sitting right. (We) were constantly [...]
