It's back! Chicago's top winter music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows returns for its seventh year from January 12 - January 16, 2011. TNK has become one of Chicago's most anticipated musical events because not only is it in a dead time, musically and weather-wise, but it serves up the best of both national and local acts. A quick glance at the initial schedule looks promising thus far. There are big names such as Besnard Lakes and Freddie Gibbs performing alongside up-and-coming new local groups such as psych outfit A Lull [...]

We've got shows both large and small including Sufjan Stevens at the Chicago Theatre , King Sparrow at Schubas , Ume at Mayne Stage and so much more. Let's get to it, shall we? FRIDAY SUFJAN STEVENS [...]
A few weeks ago Papa Cougar and I shared an earphone each, and a tube journey home, as he played me Chicago's Pet Lions. They were, he informed me, well overdue a review at Cougar HQ. Without hesitation I jumped at the opportunity to spout my opinionated take on debut EP 'Soft Right'. Let's start [...]

Pet Lions: This "article" will be about the band, Pet Lions. Shuhei Yamomato, the bass player for Pet Lions – your Chicago answer to indie pop – curses like a goddamn sailor. [...]

Three last minute reasons to saunter your way on over to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. Chicago's punchy indie rockers Pet Lions need a warm homecoming tonight because, according to Facebook page , their tour van (a.k.a. Catface ) broke down on the back to Chicago from Austin. Even though the main draw is that these guys put on a damn fine show and play some catchy-as-hell tuneage, maybe you should slip them a buck or two once their set is over to earn your good samaritan of the [...]

Thirteen tunes that have entertained my ears over the past few months. Burn it to a CD and play it loud in your car. Enjoy. 01 - Frightened Rabbit - " Swim Until You Can't See Land ". 02 - Pet Lions - " Propeller Plane ". 03 - Turbo Fruits - " On The Road [...]

Like Rooney before them, Chicagoland's Pet Lions have a particularly sunny sound. But, unlike their California colleagues they have more to sing about than how bad it sucks getting beat up at beach parties, water polo teams and love. Oh wait, I think I'm confusing Rooney with The O.C. , bitch. Rooney did have a sunny sound, but, it seemed they were just a one-trick-pony. Pet Lions do have similarities to Rooney as far as the sunny sound goes, but, that's really where the comparison [...]

As of this month is has been 4 long years since The Strokes put out their last album, "First Impressions of Earth," and that's a long time to go without a Strokes fix. Sure countless Strokes spawns have cropped up in the 8+ years since the boys first burst onto the scene as the purported saviors of rock-n-roll, but really for me nobody does Strokes better than, well, The Strokes. The boys have been putting out some pretty cool music under their various side projects , most notably Little Joy who had the distinction of being SubEx's [...]

When I was in school I took worthless classes like Calculus and Sociology, but the students at Columbia College in Chicago are doing it right. They are taking a class on running a record label. Granted, I put on a fair number of shows, volunteered at a co-op record store and helped run an illegal club when I was in college, but I never got any class credit for those activities. Their record label is AEMMP Records and they just put out their first release "Chompilation." The stand-out track on the comp is Propeller Plane [...]
Pet Lions är en indierock-grupp från Chi-town med en EP ute som heter Soft right . Och soft är det på riktigt Pet Lions - Girls of Athens

photo: Eric Rejman Pet Lions are a young quartet from Chicago who are peddling their debut EP Soft Right . They sound a bit like Weezer without the bite. Soft Right is a pretty basic indie guitar rock, with a rather cheesy keyboard bubbling under the clean cut vocals of Karl Østby - innocent good time music with reflective lyrics. The Lions still need to find their own voice. Growling a bit while recording would help. Pet Lions: [...]
