I don't remember writing Coffee this late on an ordinary day. Blame a restless night. I went upstairs about 12:30 followed by the parade of animals. We settled in, and I started reading. At the end of each chapter, I'd check the next one and see how many pages it had and tell myself that the next one would be the last. This went on until 3, chapter by chapter, as I just wasn't tired. Thinking I could drift off, I finally turned off the light but just couldn't fall asleep. Gracie was snoring at the foot of the bed [...]

Back in 2011, Polish record label Pets Recordings put out a 3-part compilation series titled Friends Will Carry You Home , featuring a nice assortment of various producers associated with the label at the time. This month, they're putting out another multi-part collaboration set, titled Friends Will Carry You Home Too . The first EP presents a very impressive array of deep house tracks, boasting productions from leaders of the scene such as Uffe and Eats Everything. Check out A1 Bassline's track, Trip Over , for a powerful, high-energy [...]

This morning I had breakfast with friends, people with whom I worked with at the high school who have also retired, then did a couple of errands; hence, the lateness of Coffee today. I am going to change the name of this blog to something alliterative like Critter Corner or Animal Antics or maybe, after last night, Rodent Roaming. It seems I need the Pied Piper of Hamlin and I will the price he asks. When I went to feed the cats last night, I noticed familiar droppings in the eaves where I keep the cat dishes. Yup, mice [...]

Last Friday night HT faves The Heavy Pets gathered their hometown fans at Fort Lauderdale's Culture Room for an "End Of The World Party." Roosevelt Collier of The Lee Boys stopped by to add lap steel to the festivities and as he tends to do when he sits in, Roosevelt stole the show. You can watch an insane video of Collier jamming with the Pets on Dewpoint thanks to the talents of videographer Mark Duclos with help from M.A.D.& CheeseheadProductions... [...]

There are a lot of music fans today recalling and recounting the details of their lives when they learned that John Lennon had been murdered. My memories are hazy and uneventful. December 8, 1980 was a Monday and a lot of folks had the sad news broken to them on Monday Night Football , but I had gone to bed at halftime and missed Howard Cosell's announcement. The next morning, I might have heard the news on Good Morning America . The television was undoubtedly tuned to the show as everyone [...]

After an initial couple of doo wop singles starting in 1958 (issued under the Parliaments name) while this visionary musician/ hairdresser was still a teenager, George Clinton seems to have sat out the first few years of the sixties musically and focused on running the barbe shop which he co-owned in Plainfield, NJ. Perhaps it was a new found connection in the music business or pure perservearance that brought Clinton to Detroit, but whatever it was, music is certainly a better place because of it. After a few unreleased Motown sessions in 1964, The parliaments name [...]

If you own a dog, odds are you walk it using some sort of retractable leash, and need to scoop up its droppings after it's done doing its business. Ruffbowl ($8) is designed for exactly these situations. It clips easily onto most large retractable leashes, holds used poop bags away from your hand, and can hold up to 4.5 oz. of water when it's time for Fido to take a drink.

The fourth single from Scottish group Pet is Together Apart. We weren't sure if this was the official video from them, but after receiving a tweet this morning, we know it is. Together Apart is right up their with the previous work of Pet, charismatic and magical and is a perfect summer time track. Pet is one group that we have placed on a list of acts we want to see perform live. Until that happens, we will keep heading to their bandcamp site and downloading their latest music [ here ]

In 2008 I became the first female Swedish artist to play at the Lollapalooza festival. It was also my first US tour and now, four years later I've done a lot of tours and am on my biggest one ever. Since December I've done over 100 gigs in the US and I'm working my way towards Chicago again. So when an opportunity arrose to enter a competition for a slot at this year's Lollapalooza I felt I had to enter. But in order to make them understand that they should book me I need YOUR help. The voting [...]

"The average dog is a nicer person than the average person," the late Andy Rooney once said, and we were reminded of that quote at the Silver Lake Jubilee over the weekend because so many nice people brought their dogs to the neighborhood festival. Photographer Laurie Scavo turned her lens on the four-legged party animals. Dog people, get your full gallery after the jump:

The Philcast is named after the detestable little Tory weasel Phil Collins, as a result of this comment on this post by James who writes Appetite for Distraction. So you can all blame him. In addition to Phil Collins, we have some Phil Spector, Phil Ochs, Phil & the Osophers and, somewhat more tenuously, Esther Phillips. Also, for some utterly inexplicable reason, the Spider Man theme song came up when I searched my iTunes library for 'Phil'. Any ideas? Was it written by Phil Phillips from Philadelphia? Also, we have the first [...]
The day is brighter than the last few and the sun is just biding its time behind a cloud. It's expected a bit later. It's a long sleeve day which I found out when I investigated Gracie's intruder bark. She was standing on the rail by the deck stairs, and the hair on her back was raised from her neck to her tail, never a good sign. I looked but saw nothing. It must have been the rabbit which just stands and stares at the dog. While Gracie was standing on the rail, I noticed the border along the side [...]
