Out of the ashes from Pete and the Pirates came Teleman , made up of several members of the band. They've previously released one single, and now it seems like a new one is on the way from their very own imprint, Encona Records . This new single is more what I expected from the new group, providing more energy than their previous single. Still, it holds onto the careful pop vibe, especially apparent on this tune during the chorus. At the rate they're going, it's only a matter of time before [...]
Pete And The Pirates is another band that I've really liked for a few years and haven't written about on here, so uhm, here they are now! They specialize in catchy pop rock that has reasonably intelligent lyrics. I checked to see if they had any albums that I was unaware of, at which time I learned they broke up. Balls! Apparently most of the guys are in a new group, so I will check them out later. Anyway, this is one of my favorite songs from their last album, One Thousand Pictures . The post [...]
Supongo [...]

Remember Pete and the Pirates from a few years ago? Their hooky indie-pop song "Jenny" was a fave of Anglofiles everywhere. Many of us felt the song should have done better in the US. Pete is back with his new band Teleman. His plaintive vocals front a beautiful, melodic track that should sit very well with you over these holidays. This single will be released on Moshi Moshi in the UK on January 14. Let's hope that Pete's time has come. By Bruce Rave Teleman - Christina [...]

And out of the ashes of Pete and the Pirates comes Teleman . Yep, I'm a little bummed there's no more Pete and the Pirates, but this brand new single from the newer outfit is pretty special. It opens slowly for the most part, using the vocal to really draw in the listener. Moving along, it adds hazy bits of keyboards and a simple drum beat before carrying you off to a blissful pop state. You can find this track on the group's debut single, which will be part of the new [...]

I could've made this list twice as long but I capped it at 50. Most of these are actual singles. The rest should be. Beyond the top ten, ordering is fairly arbitrary. Metronomy - The Look ( MP3 | Video ) I first heard this song back in February and I have yet to tire of it. I wish the keyboard solo outro lasted forever. Exlovers - Blowing Kisses ( MP3 | Video ) Rocking shoegaze pop of the highest order. [...]

I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]

The Schönbys are fictional, made-up awards for me to let you know what I've enjoyed listening to during 2011. Winners and nominations are drawn from music I have seen, heard or bought during the preceding 12 months. 2010, to me, seemed a poor year for music. When it came to choosing my top albums of the year I struggled to come up with a top 5. Was it a general dearth of good music, or just the fact that having a young baby meant I had other things on my mind? Maybe both these things transpired to cause [...]

It seems that the real cool kids on the blog don't do end of year lists. Well we like them and hope that those miserable sods slip in their paper shoes and find other people’s dirty hankies in their bobble hats. Those artists who will be sobbing into their pillows tonight because they didn't quite make it onto our list include blistering aural adventures by: Wooden Shjips, Cave, Dead Skeletons, Eat Lights Become Lights, The Field, Moon Duo, Blanck Mass, Hills, Benjamin Shaw (sorry, Jamie), Gruff Rhys, Dels, White Denim, King Creosote & John Hopkins (robbed!), and Mike [...]

It's almost the season to be jolly, but just before the holiday season we are in the midst of "the list." Yes music mags/zines and blogs are full of endless lists, lists about the best albums, best gigs, best songs, lists about lists. It could leave you feeling quite listless and we can't have that, so , here's our list, we've even checked it twice! Yup it's that vertigo inducing career high that results in being presented with a special VPME trophy ( known colloquially as a " Pipster " ) we therefore present the music that touched, inspired [...]
21. Benjamin Francis Leftwich 'Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm' - 2011's preeminent folk record (from a man). 22. Manchester Orchestra 'Simple Math' - Intense and tranquil all the same. Stunning. 23. You Me at Six 'Sinners Never Sleep' - Boys grow into men for prime pop-punk. [...]

Tweet Earlier this year Pete & The Pirates released 'One Thousand Pictures' so in all likelihood they made anything involving words to describe its wonderfulness entirely redundant. The way pictures and their painting ways are known to do. In our eyes, or more specifically our ears, lead singer Thomas Sanders is the epitome of those genius writers with a gift for the lyrical gab and endlessly loopy melody. It's quite a distracting talent, keeping us from the billion other lesser species that [...]

by Stephanie Stevens-Wade Photos by Joshua Lawrence For a majority of music lovers the start of summer is the start of festival season: overpriced tickets, boxes of wine, headache-inducing lights shows and portaloos that burn your nostrils. Whilst you're packed like a sardine in the crowd dodging the flying cup of ‘cider’ spinning above, a day festival, set in a secret serene Kentish woodland sounds like heaven. Curated by The Laurel Collective , [...]

In the wake of their sophomore album One Thousand Pictures , and despite rapturous acclaim from broadsheets, tabloids and radio DJs alike, Pete and the Pirates front man Tom Sanders sounds pensive. “We’re going back to basics. That’s how we started out, meeting up in each others bedrooms,” he begins, explaining the band’s new tactic for song writing, “Yesterday and the day before we spent some time recording. We’re doing demos, basically – pretty good quality demos of a few new songs. It sounds really cool; quite strange, but quite intriguing. It’s compulsive [...]
