On each of the next 19 days, we're going to revisit one of our DC faves of 2011... Welsh singer/songwriter Pete Lawrie brings a world of varied influences and musical shades to his music, but you can be guaranteed that there will always be something new he'll want to toss into the mix at some point. "Some days I want and try to write songs," he says. "Some days, some instrumental noise with computers. I love traditional Malian folk as much as I love dubstep as [...]

Hidden Thoughts 2006-2010 by AssociatedMinds We're honest with ourselves at AM. We wanted to hit you with this before we gear up for the release of our artists' new material [...]

Ireland's most magical festival, Body & Soul, kicks off next Saturday, 18th June at Ballinlough Castle, Co Westmeath. The two-day event will see the likes of Lisa Hannigan, Fat Freddy's Drop, Pete Lawrie, Lisa O'Neill, The Field and many, many more take to the three stages in the beautiful surroundings of Ballinlough Castle, set against a backdrop of winding pathways, stone-walled gardens and woodlands. For a full list of stage times, have a look here . As well as paying [...]

Just a few days ago, I featured a new face (and voice) on Rarities , the very talented and passionate singer-singwriter Pete Lawrie (you can read that post here ). Born in Liverpool (on Penny Lane funnily enough!) but a Welshman through and through, Pete was born into a creative family who ensured he was embedded in music from the beginning. Summers spent in his family's car on the drive to the south of France, where the soundtrack included The Beatles, Paul Simon, Elton John Pink Floyd, are some of Pete's happiest memories, an [...]

Here's a brand new name to Rarities : Pete Lawrie is a singer-songwriter hailing from Wales, who recently released his debut album A Little Brighter through Island Records. With a great selection of songs and a sound that he himself describes as "Southern blues country rock skiffle hop tronica", this guy is definitely one to keep an eye on in 2011. Born on Penny Lane in Liverpool to a mother who plays oboe in the opera and a father who makes parts for wind instruments, [...]

Pete Lawrie - A Little Brighter 9.5/10 This is the only real contender for essential album out of the clutch that sit on my desk. I have been a long time admirer of Pete Lawrie, and this is an album that seems to of been ages coming. Indeed, many of the tracks are familiar to those of us who have followed the handful of EPs and free downloads that have teased us over the last 18 months. The whole album is full [...]

Last week I was asked to do a podcast takeover by the folks at Mudhut. Having checked out their podcasts before, I knew the standard was pretty high. I'm always a little bit dubious about doing these things; for a start how do I start to pick just a few tracks from the many artists we feature on the site? Sure, there are one or two that just had to be on there like The Joy Formidable and Pete Lawrie. I hope that I have given a fair representation of the site & more importantly an insight to why I [...]

It's my parents fault." Exploring songs from his debut full-length A Little Brighter , due April 5 in [...]
Pete Lawrie has announced details of a new UK tour and the video for his forthcoming new single 'Fell Into The River'. Read more..

Damn. Another great year for remixes. Whether bringing the dance heat, adding a different texture, or completely flipping a song over, we were hit with all kinds of solid sonic reworkings. No surprise to see some of TBE's heavy hitters like RAC, Don Diablo, Bloodshy & Avant, and The Soundmen and a warm welcome to some new names that nailed their mixes to my repeat button. All of the top 6, as well as a few others, are remixes of tracks that never really caught me in their original form but now have become some of my favorite jams of [...]

This is my alternative list to the' BBC Sound of list' which always seems to me to feature artists who have pretty much broken already. That may sound pretentious of me but I can assure you that's not my intention. I never forget the privileged position I have of hearing lots of great artists ahead of the curve. The price I pay tapping away at a keypad every evening and listening to every promo that hits the mat seems a small one, and I still get a real buzz from seeing and meeting emerging artists in small venues. This year the [...]

Pete Lawrie's new single, ‘Fell Into The River’, is released on the 31st January 2011 through Island Records. It is taken from his debut album, ‘A Little Brighter' released on the 4th April 2011. Being his first proper single, it’s upbeat and jaunty in contrast with his gravel-toned, husky rasp of a voice, and it’s another expertly crafted indication of what to expect from Pete’s debut album, ‘A Little Brighter’ in April 2011. So after much deliberation and soul searching, I have finally managed to put some order into my top ten tracks of 2010. The top five pretty much picked themselves! As we noted on Welsh singer/songwriter Pete Lawrie 's spring EP How Could I Complain , "With a voice that recalls Ray LaMontagne's husky rasp, the Penarth-based performer moves easily from frayed folk melodies to Tom Waits- ian black-and-blue, atmospheric shout-out dirges to the occasional finespun piano ballad. And a lot more in between." New EP In the End , arriving in the U.K. November 8 on Island, [...]

Just recently it seems my mailbox has been particularly full! Plus, I must admit to having neglected you all this week. I had the opportunity to do the online PR for a charity single so apologies all round. I hope you all enjoy some of these artists which are basically the best of the singles I have received this week. First up is Goodluck Jonathan whose second EP in a trilogy entitled This Is Our Way Out drops 22nd November on Something or Nothing. It has a slightly retro indie feel. I can [...]

I don't often use first names when describing a live act, but last night's venue for the Cambridge leg of the Island Life Tour kind of led to everyone being on first name terms. To get me to turn out on a damp Tuesday evening and travel a 150-mile round trip, the artists have to be pretty damn good. I was looking forward to catching up with Pete Lawrie as he always has time for both fans and the media, though I'm not sure which camp I fall into really. Throw in the fact that I have been playing Lauren [...]
It may be a cliché but I half expected Pete Lawrie to showcase a popier sound on the basis of his image, but it’s in fact the sound of Southern Blues and folk that’s infected this Penny Lane born singer's eyes and ears. Lawrie’s raspy, pained voice alongside dark story telling creates a tumble of [...]
