Honestly, I didn't expect much from a new solo CL Smooth track, especially one that didn't sport Pete Rock production. Never doubt a living legend, though, as CL proves he can still hang with the best by way of "Ask About Me". While many other notable rappers from the early days have faded away and tried to make comebacks, Smooth does a superb job of picking a beat he can be comfortable with and still making the track sound fresh. This track will land on CL Smooth's forthcoming The Emancipation Of Corey Penn , which we are [...]
Recently watched this great doc on the art and history of Hip Hop, the soundtrack is obviously excellent too. From it here's Public Enemy, you can grab the film here . Public Enemy- Shut 'Em Down (Pete Rock Remix) (Download)

Earlier this week, I rambled on about jazzman Robert Glasper satisfying his hip hop tendencies with a new remix EP, Black Radio Recovered: The Remix EP, complete with remixes by Pete Rock and the like. Well, if that first tune I posted isn't enough to get you excited about Senor Glasper's endeavours, this next tune should surely do the trick. If not, you're probably reading the wrong blog. It looks like Glasper has taken to the boards himself to touch up his original version of 'Letter To [...]

Maybe it was Homeboy Sandman reminding me how radically weird "New World Water" felt the first time I heard it. Or possibly was the Danish journalist who recently reminded me that " Niggas in Poorest " was one of the better political songs of the last few years. Maybe it's just the nostalgia brought on by early on-set senescence. But Mos Def keeps on coming up in my conversational circles lately. It's been a decade and a half since Blackstar and a baker's dozen since Black on Both Sides. By now, we [...]

I do a lot of jazz right now... yep, nothing says 'grown' quite like the yazz. Or 'pretentious'...or 'old'...your call. But while I'm conscious of the chin-strokey vibe that yazz exudes, I'll happily put Robert Glasper's Black Radio on without fear of getting mocked by my friends (who probably already know I'm a chin stroker anyway and don't judge me... right guys? Guys?) Black Radio has taken a fair thrashing in my household, alright, with it's fine hip hop undertones making it a staple listen. So news [...]
