“ A sensitive person receives fifty impressions where somebody else may only get seven. Sensitive people are so vulnerable; they’re so easily brutalized and hurt just because they are sensitive. The more sensitive you are, the more certain you are to be brutalized, develop scabs… I can’t trust anyone enough to give myself to them. But I’m ready. I want it. And I may, I’m almost on the point, I’ve really got to … Because—well, what else is there? That’s all it’s all about. To love somebody. — Marlon Brando in a profile of him done by Truman [...]

It truly looks like the one album I have been waiting on for the last two years will finally see the light of day. Pete Rock & J Dilla's mother (Ma Dukes) will be releasing Dilla's album of posthumas material that has never seen the light of day. The music on this album will [...]

More unreleased Dilla shit? Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. Somewhere in an underground vault there are 3 completely finished and mixed versions of Detox , Rakim 's Oh My God , 400 unreleased Dilla cuts and enough 2Pac double-albums to last the next 30 years. I believe it's somewhere buried under Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands, future resting place of Sleezy Trees himself. I'll pass on another 2Pac Nu-Mixx Klassicks , but those Dilla tracks [...]

For whatever reason, Terrace Martin gets overlooked whenever the next generation of West Coast artists are mentioned. Since he doesn't drop a song daily its easy for him to get lost in the shuffle. His Locke High Gangsta Grillz truthfully should've been a debut album, but as long he keeps putting out music like this I won't complain. This multi-faceted artist can take all the time he needs as long as the final product remains dope as this. Collaborating with the legendary Pete Rock behind the boards, the two [...]

I was looking for an mp3 version of the Paul C remix of Too Poetic's God Me Funky , when I came across this. Harry Hotter and I were toying around with the idea of making a Paul C mix for sometime, but Kid Grebo beat us to it. Props to him!!! Influential producer/mentor for Large Professor, Ced Gee (Ultramagnetic MCs), Primo and Pete Rock, Paul C was a beast. While he didn't receive the commercial acclaim of say a Marley Marl, he still stood beat for beat with best producers of the [...]

DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock - Manifesto 2008 from DJ Wristpect on Vimeo . I Know this was a while ago...but I found this video and felt it had to go up. Huge night for Hip Hop, huge night for Toronto. StSH Tags: circa , Dj Premier , Pete Rock

That "with Friends" that they throw on this was a huge understatement. Yes, Heav Bum diddly-diddly-diddly-diddly-di ddly Dee & Pete were genuine friends with these artists so getting them all together for this song probably wasn't hard. But when you have heavyweights like Kool G. Rap, Grand Puba, CL Smooth, Q-Tip and Big Daddy Kane all on one track, it's a wonder the reels didn't pop. Throw this in your archives. Oh yeah, Puba FTW! Lyrical ambidexterity. Q-Tip probably have the best quotable with "if I [...]
I guess a few months ago.. Premier & Pete Rock were actually going on tour together to do this Soundclash type event, but cut the tour short when 1) either promoters couldn't afford the high cost of booking these two together -or- 2) their schedules became too overcrowded and they couldn't both find time to continue the tour. Either way, If I had an extra $8-$9,000 lying around, I would surely book these two in Boston and become hood rich overnight. To hip hop heads, Premier vs. Pete Rock LIVE is the equivalent of [...]
Pete Rock's NY's Finest album was one of my favorite albums from last year. Don't sleep on it! [via Crate Kings ]

Jazz legend/frequently sampled artist Freddie Hubbard died on December 29 at a California hospital after suffering a heart attack one month ago. He was the original source behind tracks by Pete Rock and Blackalicious (plus mo') and appeared on Guru 's Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2 on the track "Something in the Past." He was 70 years old. A true musician. Peep "Red Clay," on of Freddie's most famous tunes and the original sample behind ATCQ 's "Sucka N****" Here's [...]

One of your favourite DJs (DJ MK - Roots Manuva's tour DJ) has put together a mix of tunes produced by one of your favourite producers (Pete Rock). MK gets down with a quick, 17 minute blast through some Rock production which aired on KISS100. He's been kind and proud enough to let you have it for free download: Run DMC - Down With The King Jeru Tha Damaja - Can't Stop The Profit (Pete Rock remix) Biggie Smalls - Juicy Brand Nubian - Slow Down (Pete Rock remix) Das EFX - Jusumen (Pete [...]

Made for me by Aja Riddick circa '94 Being a Hip-Hop "student" in New York City (Brooklyn stand up!!) during the 80's and 90's was a tremendous privilege. Especially as a young DJ-in-training, I had many professors - Mister Magic, Marley Marl, Chuck Chillout, Clark Kent, Pete Rock, Kid Capri, and The Awesome Two - that were able to transmit their weekly lessons directly to my home school. There are so many "Chief Rockers" that inspired me to study hard, in hopes that one day I would be able to graduate with Grandmaster Honors. [...]

suddenly the 90s seem like a long time ago. one more year left of the 00s, how did that happen? i remember when these girls were ruling the clubs despite not being out of high school. aaliyah would have been the first to celebrate her 30th birthday next month. download aaliyah remixes back and forth - uk flavour remix age ain't nothin' but a number - linslee remix [...]

This blogger fave is kinda trash to me in general (he spits but something about his voice just irks me!), but I can't front on the sentiment in this track plus its produced by Pete Rock so I'ma show love: Termanology - "We Killin' Ourselves" (prod. Pete Rock ) [Yousendit mp3 D/L link via Clockwork Music ] From the Politics as Usual album IN STORES NOW! Online: [...]

Two hip hop legends in back-to-back weeks? Count us in. Pete Rock , one of the most important luminaries in producing over the last two decades, hits the stage for a special set next Tuesday at S.O.B.'s . In his career, Rock has worked alongside Ghostface Killa, Busta Rhymes, Public Enemy, Run DMC and Nas, to name just a few. ?uestlove , of The Roots, should totally not need any sort of introductory statement, so we'll just say that he'll be DJing the following Monday, December 29. And both of the shows are only about fifteen bucks, [...]

The background: " DJ Concept has put together a funky collection of instrumentals, rare grooves and soulful smoke-out vibes into a double volume of goodness. W.E.X.E. is an hour-long unwinding of one's soul. Always known to follow his own path, DJ Concept draws another simple blueprint of what goes on in the lounge areas of NYC's best buddah spots. Most of these smoke-filled funk tracks have been sampled by the greats like Pete Rock , Dr. Dre , Rza , DJ Premier and so many more. Grab a pack smokes, a fine [...]
