Pete Seeger : The Thresher [ purchase ] Even though our theme is called Getting There, the USS Thresher never did. She was a nuclear submarine that sank off the coast of Massachusetts in 1963. It was the height of the Cold War, and the fear of anything nuclear was very real. I grew up with it, and we felt that any large war that broke out had the potential to be the last one mankind would ever see. I was three years old when the Thresher sank, so I can't [...]
This is from Gazette, Vol. 1
Ani Difranco's new album, Which Side Are You On?, will be released on January 17th and I have extremely mixed feelings about it... The first two tracks on the album are so lifeless that I almost stopped listening, but the gritty, thunderous, magnificent title track is a whole other world. Folk legend Pete Seeger joins [...]

This could be one of the best days of 2011! Ani DiFranco's seventeenth (Yes, 17th!) studio album has been released to the public and made its way online. This marks the longest hiatus Ani DiFranco has taken in her prolific career. This one is called ¿Which Side Are You On? . We are already on the 3rd track and loving every bit. Of course we spend a lot of time on YouTube scavenging live sets, so we know some of the songs. But, we could already tell she is concentrating on the melodic side of this more on this [...]
If it's December, then you know it's Mixmas time at You Ain't No Picasso! Each year I get a bunch of my favorite bands to contribute themed mixes and share their thoughts about each of the tracks. MP3: Daniel Martin Moore - The Trawlerman's Song (Vashti Bunyan cover) Kentucky's Daniel Martin Moore has been influential [...]
We can't tell you how beautiful 2012 will be just because Ani DiFranco's new album, which had the longest hiatus precede it, is coming out on the 17th of January 2012. This is a cover, but Ani changed the lyrics a little bit to fit the time. We love is some Ani. "A little socialism, don't scare us one bit." - gotta love it. Around time of the protests against Governor Scott Walker's attempts to limit collective bargaining rights for public employees in Wisconsin, I wrote about what I thought Pete Seeger would think . At 91, he went voiced his support for public employee unions in Wisconsin. However, we cannot rely on Pete forever. The anti-war and civil rights movements of the 19602s spurred some of the greatest protest songs of the 20th century, from Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" to Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." Joan Baez-Live at Newport - [...]

We have the greatest of pleasures in announcing the new Ani DiFranco album. The new album is called ¿Which Side Are You On? and marks DiFranco's first studio album in more than three years. The collection features 11 new songs alongside a radically reworked rendition of the classic title song, famously popularized by the one and only Pete Seeger nearly five decades ago, but no less relevant today. Backing DiFranco is a remarkably diverse line-up of stellar musicians, including members of her own crack touring band as well as such guest players as Ivan and Cyril Neville (of New Orleans' [...]

Today is Veterans' Day in the United States - a day we set aside each year to honor and give thanks to the men and women who have defended our many freedoms. Veterans' Day is close to the holiday season that includes Thanksgiving and Christmas, and that helps us to remember that many of these brave people in uniform will not be home with family and friends over that celebratory time. Thank you for your sacrifice, and your patriotism. MP3: "Sam Stone" by John Prine [...]
I kicked this week off with a "vintage" live performance, so figure I'd close the week out in the same way. Lately there have been a few Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band discs that have been getting a lot of play time of my iPod, namely the highly recommendable Ragged But Right and Pure Jerry: Lunt-Fontanne, New York City - October 31, 1987 . Both releases feature Jerry backed by a formidable band that includes John Kahn (bass), David Kemper (drums), Kenny Kosek (fiddle), David Nelson (guitar) and Sandy Rothman (mandolin, dobro). The [...]

Acclaimed songwriter and activist Ani DiFranco will return early next year with her 17th studio album, and first in over three years, What Side Are You On? . As per its title, the album is named after and includes a "radically reworked rendition" of Pete Seeger's iconic track, which Seeger himself appears on. 11 brand new songs fill out the rest of the tracklist. In addition to Seeger, the album features appearances by Ivan and Cyril Neville (of The Neville Brothers), avant-saxophonist Skerik (Pearl Jam, R.E.M.), singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, guitarist Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman), and a [...]
Several music legends joined the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators this past Friday night. Folk legends Pete Seeger and Arlo Gutherie, accompanied by musician-grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger, composer David Amram and bluesman Guy Davis marched with throngs of people in NYC's Upper West Side while shouting verses of protest anthems. They marched peacefully for over 30 blocks as police watched from the sidelines. The musicians took turns to play their music for the crowd, giving protestors much needed energy. Mind you, Pete is 92 years old. To have joined many in standing up for what they believe in is amazing to [...]

It's a full-on revolution down at Occupy Wall Street right now; the contingent seems to be growing every day, with no sign that it will be relenting any time soon. People are pissed and enacting their democratic right, and there's a lot to be said about that. The movement's growing size has stoked a media phenomenon; now that a lot of people are reacting negatively to MTV's announcement of a True Life: I'm Occupying Wall Street special that airs 11/5 at 6PM EST, the movement seems to have hit fever pitch. [...]
Filed under: News Anna Webber WireImage Pete Seeger has spent decades protesting against war, racial inequaliy and unfair labor practices, and on Friday night (Oct. 23), he lent his support -- and voice -- to the growing Occupy Wall Street movement. After performing at New York City's Symphony Space, the legendary folk singer fell in with a group of roughly 1,000 protestors and marched more than 30 blocks down Broadway. Upon reaching Columbus [...]
