This last week I was working on poetry with my students and one day we focused on writing a blues poem (poems that follow the traditional pattern of early blues music). To help them understand blues as a genre, we talked about how blues music developed into rhythm and blues which eventually influenced both hip-hop and early rock and roll. As inspiration, I was playing some blues music in the background for the class and Leadbelly 's version of New Orleans (The Rising Sun Blues) came on. This got me to thinking about rock [...]
Last night was the opening of Silverdocs : AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival. This is the fifth annual festival and it seems to have a robust schedule, with 100 films from 40 countries. The opening film was Pete Seeger: The Power of Song , directed by Jim Brown , who also did The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time (1982) and other folkie tribute films. Of course, Seeger was in the Weavers and rode the rails with Woody Guthrie and has generally [...]

"Amazing grace how sweet the sound/That saved a wretch like me/ I once was lost but now I'm found/Was blind but now I see" Second Hand Songs lists The Beatles as the most covered artist in existence, but I have to argue that Traditional is the rightful bearer of the title. Not much is known about the man, but it seems like pretty much every artist out there has been drawn to his music at some point or another. In this post alone we feature [...]
I was going to follow up Benjy's post with one about my home state, Connecticut . An island of tranquility between Boston and New York , Connecticut remains neutral by not offering much of anything. It's a small state with big money, Martha Stewart, Joe Lieberman, and a silent "c." As a result, Connecticut is the butt of quite a few jokes and the subject of exactly zero songs. [...]

Sorry guys, I'm experiencing some technical difficulties with file hosting. I'm trying to get it all figured out, and as soon as I do, I'll begin posting my top 30 albums of 2006. To keep you entertained in the meanwhile, here are the three original versions of the covers that were featured on my best songs of 2006 list. * MP3 : "To Go Home" - Daniel Johnston from The What of Whom [ Buy it ] [...]
VOTE! I know that for those of you in New York, your choices all were decided in September at the Primary, but there are plenty of people who read this blog from around the country. So my call for election-related music brought out various interesting suggestions. From Tim McDonough a call for "Our Candidate" by World/Inferno Friendship Society (don't worry, I hadn't heard of them either.) From Andy at Circles of Concrete, "Policies" by Pete Yorn and "My Own Country" by Pennywise. And from the incomparable Thom [...]

Play it: Moses Asch's Hands (Smithsonian Folkways Records) There's been a recent wave of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings finding their way into the Rhapsody library this week. One thing they have in common is Moses "Moe" Asch , founder of Folkway Records and one of the most important non-musicians in American popular music. Asch was the son of leftist intellectual and Yiddish novelist Sholem Asch , who was also an acquaintance of Albert Einstein . Both [...]

We come now to one of the more girly-haired nations of the footballing world, the long, flowing, Swayze-esque locks of Pavel Nedved in particular proving a delight to all watching. It's also our first real Eastern bloc nation - I don't really count Croatia in that, as Marshall Tito was up his own backside rather than Russia's... The music of the former states tends to be something of a mixed bag. Mostly towards the shrimp end of the 10p-mixup spectrum, so it's alright, if nothing spectacular. And the Czech Republic appears to be headed [...]
Columbia Records has just released We Shall Overcome The Seeger Sessions by Bruce Springsteen. The CD is a compilation of 13 traditional songs that are all related to the great Pete Seeger. If you listen to the previous 20 albums by Springsteen it is apparent that he has a deep interest and love for traditional folk music. "So much of my writing, particularly when I write acoustically, comes straight out of the folk tradition. Making this album was creatively liberating because I have a love of all those different roots sounds... they can conjure up a world with [...]
Wow, it sounds like New Orleans is going to be rockin' this spring! Some really cool things are happening down there... The Tipitina's Foundation is helping musicians come back home to find work. It's one of several organizations helping artists in the aftermath of huricane Katrina. They've helped about 300 musicians with financial aid, replacement instruments and referrals for housing and gigs. Tipitina's bar has been showcasing local bands since the seventies. Nowdays, it has [...]
