Over 25 years later, "A Million Miles Away" - three minutes and thirty-four seconds of hard-driven delirium - still packs a frenzied, crescendoing wallop.
Peter Case McGonigel's Mucky Duck June 28, 2011 Surviving 40 years of rock and roll is not nearly the same as embodying it, preserving artful, poetic, and transcendent song forms that persevere ... Continue reading "Last Night: Peter Case At McGonigel's Mucky Duck" >

There's no better way to wind up a sizzling summer workday than a couple cold beers and some free music down at Houston's Cactus Music and Record Ranch . Tuesday we moseyed down there to hear a fine acoustic set from Peter Case, a singer/songwriter who spent time in rock bands like the Nerves and the Plimsouls before going solo in the mid-1980s. He was in Houston to promote his new CD, The Case Files , a collection of demos, outtakes and other rarities from his 25-year solo career. The track listing [...]
"I was always sort of not interested in what my generation was doing," Peter Case told Rocks Off 10 years ago after flipping through Louvin Bros. compact discs at a now-defunct bookstore in Suga... Continue reading "Uncovering Peter Case: The Rocks Off Interview" >

Peter Case is artful and anarchic: he speaks for the mudsills and the agitated, the weary and browbeaten; the dodgers and the doe-eyed; the prose behind the left-of-center politics; the words in-between the words. He is the intelligent listener, and the one emblazoned with free speech fortitude. Peter Case is an authentic American folk-rebel with an underside of punk who has never lost true grit. There's always something shambolic and slightly gruff, as the outtakes assembled for The Case Files (2011) witness, even when he is strumming sweet impassioned melodies. Sure, many of his generation have a keen [...]

Peter Case has been digging deep into his tape library in recent years, releasing fine archival albums from his bands the Plimsouls, the Nerves , and the Breakaways , and now The Case Files finds him offering up some rare and unreleased nuggets from his solo career. Considering the odds-and-ends nature of this album, it's a pleasant surprise that The Case Files is so consistently strong, and coming after Case has jumped back into rock & roll, it builds up a solid and enjoyable head of piss and vinegar, with [...]
The Case Files is not a new Peter Case album per se, but rather an odds and sods collection of demos, outtakes, one live shot and other rarities recorded between 1985 and 2010. Peter Case is hardly a household name, but he has had an indelible impact on popular music during a career that has spanned roughly 35 years. In 1976, he formed a band in San Francisco called the Nerves, who recorded a little ditty called "Hanging On The Telephone". You've probably heard that song, even if you're unfamiliar with the band, considering Blondie covered it on [...]

Thanks to the Bloggerpocalypse that occurred earlier this week, this nearly finished post was lost forever when Blogger reverted back, jettisoning out over 30 hours worth of posts/comments . The work that was published has mostly been brought back, but, as in my case, drafts were lost or reverted back, losing all updates. Too bad, to, as this was a pretty deep week for releases, one that deserves attention. Between releases from Okkervil River , Man Man , The Antlers , Sloan , Sam Roberts Band , The Felice Brothers , [...]
The long-awaited Okkervil River new album, I Am Very Far, dropped officially this week, and although we have yet to hear the studio version (compared to last week's live webcast performance of the LP) all the way through (probably this weekend), but what we've heard so far is very promising. In 2005, Okkervil River broke [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Peter Case - One More Mile

Peter Case - The Case Files Release Date: May 10, 2011 Label: Alive

Peter Case is another one of those chronically under-appreciated artists who I never tire of cramming down your throat. From his early days with The Nerves, to his "breakthrough" with The Plimsouls, to his later solo outings, Case has given the world more than his fair share of great songs. It's really a damn shame that a guy with this much talent isn't mentioned in the same breath as guys like Elvis Costello or Nick Lowe. Never terribly prolific, Case nonetheless keeps busy, and The Case Files finds the [...]
