US Republican Representative Peter King (NY): "The fact is these people are anarchists. They have no idea what they're doing out there… They have no sense of purpose other than a basically anti-American tone and anti-capitalist. It's a ragtag mob basically. ... [W]e have to be careful not to allow this to get any legitimacy. I'm taking this seriously in that I'm old enough to remember what happened in the 1960s when the left-wing took to the streets and somehow the media glorified them and it ended up shaping policy. ... We can't allow [...]

Worried that coverage of Michael Jackson's death is "too politically correct", , Republican Congressman Peter King has decided it's time to redress the balance : Rep. Peter King, a Long Island Republican, said in the video posted Sunday that society is glorifying a "low-life" while hardworking teachers, police officers, firefighters and veterans don't get the credit they deserve. "This guy was a pervert," King said in the video, shot Sunday by a staff member outside an American Legion hall. "He was a child molester. He was a pedophile. And to be giving this much coverage [...]
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter King was a true giant in the Nigerian music scene of the 1970s. He recorded nine albums in Africa, the U.S., and U.K., and his record Shango is the most famous and readily available. This is the title track off that record and is a mixture of hard African rhythms, James Brown-styled funk, jazzed-up horn arrangements, and political messages that King became known for. This track is featured on a new compilation from Strut Records that came out today as well. Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of [...]

The moment 2009's Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics coop was announced for the Inspiration Information series was a total bliss. The idea of the legendary father of ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke making a new album with UK's The Heliocentrics collective from the already revered Stones Throw was destined to be a match made in heaven. Although it achieved critical success I felt a bit underwhelmed with their 2007 album " Out There ", I knew this would be a special occassion right after watching the interviews and the studio sessions and boy it's one of the best 2009 has for offer. [...]

Ah yes, I love this time of year. You know, when we all look back on the music we've listened to over the past twelve months, attempt to define and evaluate pieces of art in relation to one another, hoping to construct a hierarchy of albums or songs that represents a year in summation. Alright, so only some of us engage in this somewhat masochistic act. Before I constructed such a list, it always seemed particularly daunting, but I've found that it's also an extremely rewarding process... listening to albums comparatively can help reveal what elements really make a record [...]
It's a nice and eclectic mix of tunes today - David Axelrod delivers the killer jazz/funk/fusion on Miles Away, taken from the Dusty Groove reissue of his 1975 LP Seriously Deep. Bomb the Bass have finally released a new album Future Chaos, with guest vocals from Mark Lanegan, Fujiya & Miyagi, Jon Spencer and Toob, who also contributes a remix. Is a new Q-Tip record ever going to come out? I need
photo by Matthew Craig I've said it before and I'll say it again: " It was the sound of post-independence Nigeria, not Vampire Weekend. " Suffice it to say that Afrobeat has become an increasingly prominent element in today's fusion music. Yet we seldom stop to think where these unique tones originated. So this compilation marks the beginning of a series dedicated to investigating the peaks and troughs of a glossed-over genre. After all, no musical victory is without its unsung heroes. Various Artists - "Advanced Afrobeat For [...]

A little life lesson before the tune today... being stoned is not conducive to keeping secrets... It's been a while since I've posted some proper African Funk, and that, as they, ain't right! So let's fix that with a jammy by Nigerian sax man Peter King . That's about all I know about him, although if you click the name, I'm sure that article is very informative. I myself couldn't be arsed to read the whole thing this morning, but since when do I have to do [...]
