I'm not a big hip-hop fan, but I'm all for smashing genre barriers and mixing shit up every once in awhile. It's fun being unorthodox, which is why I've been digging Toronto multi-instrumentalist/producer Peter Project (aka Peter Chapman) and his slammin' tune "Unorthodox". The concept of being far from what's expected goes just beyond the song title to taking in the packaging of his recently released Fresh EP . You see, the download card for the EP comes encased in a bar of soap. Yeah, you read that right: A BAR OF SOAP. [...]

In this edition: Owen Pallett drops Final Fantasy moniker in advance of his first Japanese release, Sony responds to Diamond Rings in light of last week's controversy, Peter Project plans to sell new EP as a bar of soap, and forthcoming release information from the Rural Alberta Advantage, City & Colour and Junior Battles. In keeping with the spirit of the holidays several artists have offered up holiday music for free download, including Jason Collett, Evening Hymns, Ohbijou, Oh No Forest Fires, Woodpigeon & more. Plus videos and downloads from Everything All the [...]

Tough as it is these days to sell your musical wares, we've all seen artists coming up with creative ways to do just that. That said, I'm not sure I've heard of anything as creative, or as committed to the album's concept, as the new EP from Toronto's Peter Project, who is selling his new EP in the form of an iPod-shaped bar of soap that has a download card for the songs inside. Rather clever, or perhaps Peter just has some really stinky fans and is trying to remedy that. Who's to say. Either [...]
Just when you think every gimmick conceivable has been used to package and sell music someone comes up with a new take that blows your mind. Step up Toronto DJ Peter Chapman, AKA Peter Project. He has packaged his new EP, Fresh, as a high-quality bar of soap. Encased in the iPod-shaped soap is a digital download card that gives you an access code for the EP. Pretty clever, eh? Once you've

Peter Project - Fresh EP FRESH features standout cameos from Peter 's talented crew of musicians and vocalists. Master MC, More or Les returns to flow with Peter, whipping up a whirlwind of witty rap stylings. Sci-Fi songstress, Laura Barrett contributes her signature kalimba plucks to the eerie, germ-ridden adventure of a song, The Quest For Personal Freshness. In Retail, is an exhibition of a polarized trifecta of excellence, Masia One, oozing hard ass rhymes with ease, Maylee Todd taming the tough with her dreamy and warm chorus, and Wordburglar seals the deal [...]
Peter Projects was one act that I missed out at Pop Montreal this year. When I heard the name, I thought it would be him who I talked to at Pop Montreal but it was someone else . Who knew both had the same name. Music is a mix of indie pop electro hip-hop. The EP has a theme of being squeaky clean. Catchy and funky sampling. Interesting collaboration with More Or Less , Masia One , Wordburglar , Laura Barrett and Maylee Todd [...]

It's Christmas Eve and the festive-booze is about to start flowing. The next few days are likely to be packed, so I thought I'd better get the second part of my favourite Canadian songs of 2008 done before the holiday fun starts. If you missed part 1, here it is . Otherwise, on to the second half. Once again, these songs are arranged in a mixtape order that I found pleasing ( download the whole thing in a zip file here ): Human Highway - The Sound ( Moody Motorcycle [...]

Frank Yang I'm not even kidding when I say that a typical Friday night for me usually wraps up sound asleep before midnight. Rock'n'roll lifestyle indeed. But I had been quite looking forward to seeing Brooklyn's Parts & Labor , what with their latest album Receivers growing on me more with each listen, so instead of being properly crashed out from the week that was last Friday, I was at Sneaky Dee's taking in a full lineup of local acts before the headliner. Kicking things off were [...]

It's 3am. I'm on a streetcar heading east on Queen street with a long way to go. My friends and I had initially met up at a loft downtown to see Woodhands , but the place was too damn hot so a few of us reluctantly sought the dingy cool of a pub a few blocks away. Unfortunately, not only was the bar in question no less warm, but it was also far too hip to have the dingy charm I was after. After a scotch, a shot and a friend of mine causing a scene with [...]
