Since moving into a new place can be hectic and tiring and not all that fun - and because I didn't want to waste an entire day trying to mount a TV I don't know how to mount - I decided to drive out to Devil's Punchbowl with some friends. Ken and KT were up [...]

Arrived home last week to find three interesting new songs waiting for me. Let's start with the Bonnie Prince Billy one. Prolific as ever, the Louisville Lion just contributed to the cool song+stories project of Long Haul Productions. Mother Nature Kneels is a dreamy but intense beauty, inspired by a mysterious wave of small earthquakes in Faulkner County, Arkansas. Read all about its background here . Bonnie Prince Billy - Mother Nature Kneels MP3 Meanwhile, Jack Oblivian [...]

[Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Henry Lee" MP3] Just over the New Mexico border, in a town called Texaco, I stopped for gas. Across the street from the station was a large brick building with a sign that said Ruby's Antiques & Collectibles. I made a detour and stopped in to speak with [...]

I'm not usually an Independence Day person. I like to grill and drink, but I don't approach it the same way I do, say, Christmas Eve (see: any of the past four years of drunken exploits) or my birthday. But I have to admit, this July 4th weekend was one of the best I've ever [...]
Friends, Invalids, Basement-dwelling agoraphobics, lend me your ears! It's time for another Sunday Mix Tape, and have I ever got "the goods" for you. You've probably been asking yourselves why I am not posting daily MP3s anymore, or why the treasures from my collector's slum have been few and far between these past few weeks. The reason is, I've been advised to watch what I post in regards to the music I often share here. Cryptic, yes, but I am not really one to test boundaries. So until further notice there might be less music than many of you click [...]

I woke up with a horrible hangover this morning. I decided to go out with friends last night to prove to them that I'm not a total recluse, and I wound up raging pretty hard. We started out night by playing some drinking game with a deck of playing cards that I think I remember hearing about in high school once. I was not very good at it, but it enabled me to drink a few beers in a very short amount of time. We headed out to the bars at about 10:30 and the next 4 hours were kind [...]

Musicians Pay Tribute to Judee Sill, 70s artist you may not know about; but you should.

There's no real need for an introduction. Spring is here finally, and it rules. West coasters may not be privy to this, but on the east coast, we have this thing called February which really sucks the life out of you. With these new mild conditions and sunshine, I had the energy to pull together a rather massive springtime collection of music - sunny folk and psychedelia (with annotations!) that evokes the oft conjured imagery of the season that I won't waste time reiterating here. This gangsta-ass mix is so massive, as a matter of fact, that it will be [...]

Drag City has been one of my favourite record labels ever since they started out in the late eighties. Pavement, the Palace Brothers, Royal Trux and Silver Jews recorded their first stuff for this independent Chicago label, so go figure. They´re often cutting edge, very consistant and always cool, so I made it a habit to keep track of their new releases. I managed to overlook last year´s album by P.G Six however, an omission I regretted when I heard their I´ve Been Traveling somewhere recently. Great song! So I bought the album just now and although [...]

For my final "Friday Top Ten" of the year, I always like to write about the news music that has found its way into my possession over the course of the previous 365 days. In 2005, I think I devoted a paragraph to each of my favorite 25 records. Last year, I wrote three-word reviews for my favorite 50 records. This year, I'm upping the stakes, with one all-encapsulating sentence for the best 100 new records. Strap your safety belts on, because this is going to be a very, very long music-related entry. The Top 100 [...]

Why am I so, so tired? As I write this I have just awoken from a mini-slumber. Earlier tonight I tried watching The Polar Express with Nicci to officially usher in the Christmas season, but unfortunately I could not keep my eyes open, and missed the majority of the animated holiday magic. Not only that, I decided to venture up to the garage with Ilya and others for a brief session, completely shirking my mix tape duties, so this has all been thrown together with alarming speed. Hopefully it doesn't totally suck, you'll understand my somnolence, and give [...]
