Erich said, You gotta check out this band; you gotta review their EP. End paraphrase. Having recently noted the band's signing to Barsuk , it seemed the logical next step. In anticipation of that future record, slated for an early 2010 release, it just made sense. Besides, there's substantial overlap between the self-titled EP and the pending full-length, Eyelid Movies . Of the five tracks on the EP, four find their way onto that album of eleven total songs. I'm here to say that the EP is still totally worth [...]
"Mouthful of Diamonds" A couple of weeks ago I saw Phantogram open for The xx and The School of Seven Bells ( here ). They are a duo from Saratoga Springs that self-identify as "street beat/psyche pop" according to KEXP Seattle. Texturally, I hear them as Dummy- Portishead and not Third- Portishead, yet danceable. Obviously the feeling is completely different though since Phantogram is relatively happy and sung slightly shoegaze; if Portishead sounds like acid, Phantogram sounds like E (or so I hear). They also remind me of Chairlift, another group [...]

Phantogram. I just wanted to jump on this before it was old news. I was bumbling around the blogosphere the other day and stumbled upon a new-ish band from New York called Phantogram. I haven't really stopped listening to them since (minus an interlude for the new Yeasayer track, which is pretty sweet). I've been trying to think of ways to describe Phantogram's sound, but I will let them speak for themselves: "We wanted to incorporate all our own influences and created our own sound that's a combination of Serge Gainsbourg, sampling [...]

It wasn't long ago that we last wrote about Phantogram . That write-up came mere minutes after hearing the gloriously catchy 'When I'm Small' for the first time. Since then I've become accustomed to the debut 'Eyelid Movies' which, because of its re-release next February, looks set to class Phantogram in many "new bands" list which will no doubt arrive very soon. Said album has its limits and there are boundaries that it refuses to cross. But that only adds to the sheer catchiness and instant likability of the record. Opener 'Mouthful Of Diamonds' sets [...]
This song has been hearted out all over the place on the hype machine this last week, so I'm mentioning it again, just in case you missed it. Phantogram is an electro-rock duo from Greenwich Village consisting of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, and their sound varies from shoegaze to indie pop to experimental. Their latest album, Eyelid Movies, dropped last month and was named as such because, as

For fifteen seconds at the beginning of Phantogram's "When I'm Small" I have this panicked feeling that someone made a dub-step version of Cold War Kids' "Hang Me Out To Dry." The lazily threatening bass-riff, the thumping drums - it all feels like indie rock for a nightclub. The hooting vocals chirp over the top and this thing sounds equal parts dangerous and delicate. Of course, the album is

You ever have this feeling when you leave a show and you think to yourself, "that was exactly what I thought it would be." Well that is how I felt leaving The xx's last CMJ show this past Friday. The first band Shaka Ponk I didn't find very good, but the sound seemed off and Mat felt like their recordings are probably pretty good based on their performance. I wasn't inspired to try and find out. Phantogram on the other hand was really good live, and had a great sound and a beautiful lead singer. It inspired me enough to [...]

Sometimes the scariest part of a movie is when it is dark and quiet. The same is true of music, and that is what these selections for my huge Halloween mix have in common. Liz Durrett's Outside Our Gates was my 3rd favorite album of 2008, and sometimes I think it should have been first. It has turned out to be the one I go back to the most. I also like her older albums, Husk and The Mezzanine . The title song from Husk starts out with: [...]
See more of my CMJ photos on Flickr. Glasser Matador Records/True Panther Sounds Showcase The Suffolk Despite a minimal little stage setup that fused with the trickling-in audience, Glasser aka Cameron Mesirow, lately an LA-NY dual citizen, put on a wonderful, engaged and engaging show of songs from her EP Apply and what I assume to be a forthcoming full-length release on True Panther Sounds (please!!!) Glasser may love effects, but her voice is powerful and original and those little yelps on "Apply" sounded [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News London's the XX , one of the most talked about bands of 2009 and one of CMJ 's most prolific acts, didn't lose any steam this week. After a Tuesday showcase at New York City's Mercury Lounge that saw a line snaking around the block and a lot of disappointed fans turned away, the foursome moved on to the Delancey Thursday night. But their biggest show was opening for School of Seven Bells at the Music Hall of [...]

Without question The XX are the most hyped band of the season. They played the Music Hall of Williamsburg last night to an audience of professional photographers. That's what happens when five shows in less than the week that is CMJ doesn't offer enough good chances to take a picture of the group. In all fairness to them, this was their most legitimate venue of the week. UPDATE: The XX played a show mere hours later at the Tribeca Grand Hotel around 1:30AM. After the set I was intrigued to hear from Lizzyville blogger, [...]

I am a slacker when it comes to this blog in the past week. I've been letting boys distract me and working on the new Winter collection for Ampersand Designs that debuts on November 1st. So, to make up the fact that I was in Alabama (again) last weekend, here's a little delayed "AIAWW" for you guys... WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! Phantogram's "Eyelid Movies" album was just released on Amazon as an import (which is RETARDED seeing as they're an American band) but it may just be worth it. Listen to this song and prove me [...]
