Back once again for the renegade master, it's HiFi Fidelity Radio. This week's show has been brewing like Yorkshire tea during my mid-term exams and infusing with milk and sugar during my inability to function a computer without somehow almost reversing the boiling of the water with my sheer stupidity. Now that the cyber stirrer of doom (i've been drinking a lot of tea to soothe the pain) has permitted me to bring the latest and greatest music, I shall with venom and verve; or attempt to at least. This week's show is probably [...]
Monday, March 15, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: If you've yet to click over to the film section then do so now! I've seen six films since SXSW started on Friday, and all of them have breakdowns for you to feast on. Better yet, every movie was good, so be sure to scribble down a few reminders to see them whenever they each get a wide release. Today I have the 10 artists that I will be trying my very hardest to see at SXSW. Dan will [...]

Phantogram is one of the newer, more successful bands to carry the torch of the Bristol-based trip-hop sound, which is seeing new life under the guise of 'shoegazer' and 'dream pop.' Their debut album, 'Eyelid Movies,' was indeed mastered in the British trip-hop mecca, but Phantogram actually hail from Saratoga Springs, NY and consist of Sarah Barthel (keyboardist/singer by night, English teacher by day) and Joshua Carter (artist and all-around fuzz guitar master). Saratoga Springs is a bit of a sleepy hollow town, which makes sense considering the band's ghostly, mellow poetry. [...]

Phantogram - "Mouthful of Diamonds".
Have you heard the new Phantogram album "Eyelid Movies"? No? You really should give it a listen - it's fantastic. Yes, I didn't review it when it came out a few weeks ago (too many albums to cover, too little time!), but rest assured it has my seal of approval for being highly excellent. Anyways, for those who are approaching Phantogram with fresh ears, I'll tell you that the duo of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter make haunting and dark music that's often reminiscent of Portishead and other trip-hop stalwarts. I don't know that trip-hop is the best way to [...]

Phantogram- Eyelid Movies MMM1/2 Phantogram is lost in translation. Now wait, that's not necessarily negative. Working through the Saratoga Springs duo's debut release on Barsuk , I'd had flashbacks to Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson wandering through fluorescent wonderlands, occasionally broken up by images of the chemical and mystic light of [...]

Frank Yang Wednesday night's in-store at Criminal Records had something for everyone. For The Besnard Lakes , it was an opportunity to refine the translation of their just-released new record The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night into live performance before setting out on a world tour that would take them and their much-anticipated new album across Europe and North America. For those in attendance, it was a chance to be amongst the first anywhere to hear the new songs live and in an intimate - and free - [...]

In exactly five days, I will be on a plane to Austin, Texas, along with every other schmucky music industry person in the world, along with a whole bunch of not-so-schmucky music fans and musicians. SXSW is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it's my worst nightmare realized. I hate missing out on things. I was always the last kid asleep and first person awake at sleepovers. When there's 2,000 bands playing multiple times in four days, imagine all the things you're missing out on! I have this recurring dream where I'm trying so hard to [...]

I'm liking what is happening in music this year and last year. Toro Y Moi, Vega, Washed Out, Neon Indian, and now Phantogram. There is a fresh new feeling that seems to be a signifigant shift away from traditional indie/underground rock and pop of the early and mid 2000's, which is a good thing. It's not always easy to pinpoint when a musical shift happens until 10-20 years later, but I think in this case it's pretty apparent. Either that or I'm paying more attention to it. Phantogram is the perfect combination of all things I'm loving in [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours Joshua Carter and Sarah Barthel's, Phantogram is a hip new band from Sarasota Springs, N.Y., whose sound is a mixture of dope beats and dream pop. Spinner recently caught up with Josh to talk about Phantogram's upcoming venture to SXSW and how he is looking forward to the tacos, bbq, beer and warm weather that come along with all of the music. Describe your sound in your [...]

I am embarrassed to say that I am late on the discovery of Phantogram . Better late than never. Chances are if I didn't discover them until now, there is are a few of you who are in the same boat. We are all hear to learn, right? Phantogram is the duo of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter who are based out of Saratoga Springs, New York. It is beyond tough to find just one genre description to stick to Phantogram. How could you classify a band to one genre when their music has traces of trip-hop, [...]

Phantogram Playing in San Francisco for the third time in five months, the Saratoga Springs, NY duo Phantogram once again graced us locals to a charged performance at The Rickshaw Stop Wednesday night, March 3rd. Opening for School Of Seven Bells last October and Zero 7 in December, this was the first headlining show in the Bay Area for these upstart soundsmiths. Phantogram Friends since junior high, the team of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel released their self titled EP [...]

Ryan Edward Miller Canadian Musicfest 2010 is almost upon us, and while some of my blog brethren have offered their suggestions of what to see by way of their own schedules, I'm going to take a more free-form approach because following my own schedule will probably not yield the optimal experience. Logistics and workloads, not to mention still needing to get my act together for SxSW the following week, are keeping my plans relatively limited in scope but if none of that was a concern, then here's a [...]

If you haven't yet heard "Eyelid Moves", the recently released debut album from Phantogram , then you're missing out on one of my favorite albums so far this year. The album is a mix of so many different styles that all work together to create one cohesive album thats creative and experimental but still completely accessible. But my favorite on the album is probably "As Far As I Can See", which starts out with a catchy chopped up sample presumably of a Motown hit. But instead of hearing someone rap over the sample, we get the [...]

I, like so many others, have been enamored by "Eyelid Moves", the debut album from Saratoga Springs small(ish) towners Phantogram , officially released last week. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter have put together an album that's a mish-mash of styles and genres, but one that sounds completely cohesive. After listening to the album, it makes perfect sense that the duo is now a part of the progressive Ghostly International label (based in my nearby college town of Ann Arbor, MI). Upon first listen, the song that immediately jumped out [...]

Phil Harder Did anyone see this coming? I certainly didn't. This question, of course, is only relevant to those of a certain age/era for whom the name, " Bettie Serveert " still means something. To everyone else: get off my lawn. Aside for the unfamiliar: the Betties were the Netherlands' finest rock export since Golden Earring and a staple of '90s college rock with three albums on Matador full of crunchy guitar pop and Carol Van Dijk's expressive vocals. Entering the 21st century, they explored side projects and [...]
