Norton Juster and Jules Feiffer talk to CBS Sunday Morning about crafting their classic book The phantom Tollbooth. Steve Johnson of the Alabama Shakes talks to Exclaim! abut the band's debut album, Boys and Girls , released this week. "I can't speak for everyone but I was definitely raised in church," he says. "I think the strongest comparison between our music and gospel is the emotion felt behind the music and the uplifting sense [...]
Mary Timony talks to the Times-Picayune about her band, Wild Flag . OffBeat also interviews the band's keyboardist, Rebecca Cole. I've noticed in interviews that there's been an emphasis on making it clear that this is a real, operational band, not a one-off project. With that in mind, do you guys have any plans for the future? We're going to do this tour, and next year play a lot more. We're already working on new songs, which hopefully we can play on this [...]

You know what's fairly remarkable? I've never actually read The Phantom Tollbooth . Somehow, I just never read it as a kid. And I've decided after reading this New Yorker retrospective to finally remedy that failure in my life. It's a commonplace of scholarship to insist that children's literature came of age when it began to break away from the authoritarian model of the moralizing allegory. Yet "The Phantom Tollbooth" is an old-fashioned moralizing allegory, with a symbolic point at every turn. Milo finds [...]
… on Jan. 25, Pollard released his latest solo album, Space City Kicks, on Guided By Voices Inc. which opened the floodgates on a slew of new releases coming from the ultra-prolific songwriter this year. He recently reunited with former GBV guitarist Doug Gillard for another Lifeguards release, Waving at the Astronauts. That album was [...]

fLako will be releasing a new EP titled Mini Tollbooth through Project Mooncircle on December 17th. Rather than explain the inspiration behind the EP myself, check out what fLako had to say on the matters: Mini Tollbooth is inspired by a novel called Phantom Tollbooth. The film adaptation from 1961 is so beautiful. I like to get lost in these childish worlds of freedom, where everything is possible. This modern fairy tale is about a young boy named Milo who is bored by the world around [...]
The following recap is for the 6/24/08 installment of The Best Show on WFMU. It documents game-changing developments in the Newbridge Mayubernatorial election, and assorted non-political delights.</em "Imus level. We're going to ImusLand tonight. Get ready. We are not going to ImusLand." -- Tom, deciding against a stop at The Mushmouth Ranch "Good night, unfunnyman." -- Tom, eulogizing the stand-up comedian George Carlin "Go buy some gum and chew it and then throw it in the park and let the bums, like, find it and [...]

Man, I can't even type what Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart had to say to John McCain about his campaign using their song "Barracuda" to introduce Sarah Palin. Suffice to say they are not fans of Senator McCain or his running mate. Of course, McCain has every right to play the song provided he pays the proper licensing fees. Perhaps he should consider using "Magic Man" to introduce himself. Here's Phantom Tollbooth's cover of the song in question. Phantom [...]
This interview was conducted with key contributions by Townsman Kpdexter! A few months ago, Kpdexter wrote about the unique collaboration between Robert Pollard and late-80s Indie Rock band Phantom Tollbooth known as Beard of Lightning . If you'll recall, Pollard was a fan of the band's works, and with his combination of fanboy exuberance and cult hero pull he received both a copy of the master tapes of their 1988 album [...]
