Commissioned in 1979 by the City of Rotterdam, Satyagraha premiered in Rotterdam on September 5, 1980. It made its Metropolitan Opera premier on Friday night. It's immensely beautiful. So, I finally got round to watching Naqoyqatsi this week, and I'm feeling ambivalent about the whole affair. Let's cover the upside first. It is a stunning achievement in the craft of film-making. It features interviews and discussions with former United States Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. McNamara is a remarkably articulate and intelligent man, and his thoughts on war and morality are immensely striking and thought-provoking. For my inaugural post, I'd like to highlight a not-too-well-known score by an all-too-well-known composer. Paul Schrader's interesting but mostly unseen "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" is a nonstandard biopic of Japanese author and radical Yukio Mishima. As the film builds almost imperceptibly to its dramatic climax, Philip Glass's score does the same, doubling over on itself in the familiar minimalist, repetitive Glass style but doing so with an emotion not always found in his compositions.
