Nicholas Ozgunay lives out in Brooklyn by way of small town Missouri. He rarely uses more than ink and water to create landscapes that look like the cross section of distant planets and their moons. It's haunting and beautiful, like someone who has spent their lives in the cosmos and was asked to paint what they saw when they closed their eyes at night. It's not of this world, not of this time, and certainly not of the streets of Brooklyn. Thank God. Nicholas Ozgunay's Website [...]

This is the music that accompanied the love scene between Eisenheim and Sophie, before she rides back to the castle to meet a seemingly grim fate. Philip Glass - Sophie (mp3) , from The Illusionist
Philip Glass (composer): Satyagraha - Act I, Scene 1: The Kuru Field of Justice Satyagraha - Act III, New Castle March, 1913 (final movement) New York City Opera, 1985. Commissioned in 1979 by the City of Rotterdam, Satyagraha premiered in Rotterdam on September 5, 1980. It made its Metropolitan Opera premier on Friday night. It's immensely beautiful. If you are in New York I would recommend seeing it before the season is over. Sung in Sanskrit.
So I'm delurking to talk about a subject near and dear to my heart: literature. Ok, so actually, I'd rather post songs about literature than do my homework. I was mostly surprised with how many literary references I found in songs I liked. Also, I find that most of the songs I found with literary allusions tend to be highly experimental. Someone already posted a few songs from the Eurythmics' For the Love of Big Brother album, but my favorite song has to be the stark, haunting [...]

So, I finally got round to watching Naqoyqatsi this week, and I'm feeling ambivalent about the whole affair. Let's cover the upside first. It is a stunning achievement in the craft of film-making. It looks incredible. The digitally manipulated images are used to great effect, and there's something very satisfying about seeing a polemic that has the honesty to manipulate its source material. The downside is sadly rather more significant. Naqoyqatsi is crass and bombastic. It treats the viewer like an idiot. The juxtaposition of images is [...]

This is perhaps the most fascinating film I have ever seen. Natch, it is certainly the most fascinating. It features interviews and discussions with former United States Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. McNamara is a remarkably articulate and intelligent man, and his thoughts on war and morality are immensely striking and thought-provoking. The film is complimented by legendary composer Philip Glass, whose music sets the mood throughout. The original interview footage is edited impeccably, and these intelligent discussions about war are sure to get you thinking. I enjoy the feeling of thoughts circling my [...]

For my inaugural post, I'd like to highlight a not-too-well-known score by an all-too-well-known composer. Paul Schrader's interesting but mostly unseen "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" is a nonstandard biopic of Japanese author and radical Yukio Mishima. As the film builds almost imperceptibly to its dramatic climax, Philip Glass's score does the same, doubling over on itself in the familiar minimalist, repetitive Glass style but doing so with an emotion not always found in his compositions. One particular melody returns throughout the film in a few different tracks, but never so powerfully as in "Kyoko's [...]

Still on the soundtrack theme, I found this curious little dex . It's curious because apart from the obligatory Philip Glass and Tangerine Dream , is also some sort of "classic" Hollywood action film soundtrack MP3s. The bitrate is abysmal, but the main theme to Rambo 2 is on here. And so is a godawful, obvious love scene MP3 called " Skyline " from the soundtrack to Cobra. Cobra . Jeez, that takes me back. Based on the amount of sequels Stallone has been shitting out [...]
