I hope the realisation that this is actually a cover doesn’t take from the pleasure it is currently affording you. Look at it this way, now you have 2 favourite new bands to salivate over. First there is the Nebraska 3-piece called the Philistines Jr. , who wrote it, who have been on the go since 1990 and secondly there is this German called Locas in Love who translated the little ditty and in the process made it their own. So much their own in fact that you may not even recognise it from its original state (hear below). [...]
Things are starting to get a little hectic. Between the trying to get everything prepared for a cross-country move and the fact that I work in a bar in a city that's about to host the Super Bowl causing me to have one day off in the next two weeks has me more than a [...]

The Connecticut indie-pop duo of Peter Katis and Adam Pierce, AKA The Philistines Jr., recently enlisted the help various indie rock friends to cover or remix songs from their 2010 If A Band Plays in the Woods...? The outcome was quite pleasant. If A Lot Of Bands Play in the Woods...? is available on Tarquin [...]

Peter Katis is the production mastermind behind The National's flawless 2007 album, Boxer , and he contributed some production to 20102s High Violet. Even casual readers of ATG are aware of my unending obsession with the inventively glum quintet, which in turn makes me a big fan of Katis. Turns out, Matt Berninger and co. are even bigger fans, dedicating Boxer 's album cover to Katis (the above photo is of the band performing "The Geese of Beverly Road" at Katis' wedding). [...]

REMHQ You can't really call it a long goodbye - the announcement last month about the dissolution of R.E.M. was about as abrupt as they come, with no farewell tour or even a final show attached - but shortly thereafter they did announce a final release in the form of the Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011 compilation which is set to come out November 15. And amongst its 40-song, career-spanning tracklist are the final three songs that R.E.M. will release, recorded after the [...]

This cover of the Philistines Jr. song, "Twenty Miles to NH Part 2," finds The National in new territory. The pacing is manic and uplifting, a surprising twist from a band that has come to be known for its cripplingly honest insight into the difficulties of adulthood, love and life. Berninger's baritone floats over the fast cracking drum-beat, and combined with the female vocals, it, amazingly enough, evokes feelings of contentedness and hope. [...]

Listen to the National cover the Philistines Jr. on 'Twenty Miles to NH Part 2.'

Leave it to The National to perform a song about cats that could so easily bring you to the brink of tears. The band, along with a slew of other indie acts, did a cover for the Philistines Jr. album If a Lot of Bands Play in the Woods... , performing a rendition that fits perfectly for an introspective open-air drive. The track leads in with a simple piano riff that acts as the root for a blossoming of instrumentation that grows throughout the songs entirety. Berninger's vocals contrast beautifully with the sweeping background bringing [...]
One of the most painfully overlooked albums of last year was If A Band Plays in the Woods...?; the silent comeback of The Philistines Jr --- the musical outlet for Peter and Tarquin Katis.... Listen At BIRP!

The album is due out 11/1 and will include tracks from other notables, Jonsi, Tokyo Police Club and Nick Muhly. Check out The National's rendition of Twenty Miles To NH Part 2. The National hit all right spots with this cover of The Philistines Jr. ’s Twenty Miles to NH Part 2 , taken from their forthcoming cover compilation If a Band Plays in the Woods…? which also features the likes of Jónsi & Alex and Nico Muhly. mp3 The National - Twenty Miles to NH Part 2 (The Philistines Jr. cover)
Connecticut indie rockers the Philistines Jr. must have some serious pull, because their forthcoming covers compilation If A Lot Of Bands Play In The Woods… , which contains covers and remixes of songs from last year's If a Band Plays in the Woods...? LP, features a number of notable guests like Jónsi, Tokyo Police Club, Nico Muhly and the National. Speaking of them, here's the National's take on "Twenty Miles to NH Part 2." Read More...
