Besides its obvious charms — agile melodies, caffeinated percussion and twinkling keyboards — the debut album from Soft Swells feels like a pep talk from a old friend. It's full of polite but candid imperatives. "Say It Like You Mean It." "Put It on the Line." "Shake It Off." "Never Leave Home." "Make It Go Away." Songwriter Tim Williams has obviously given a lot of thought to what is righteous and true, introspection likely triggered by his move to Los Angeles from New York in 2009 after open-heart surgery. Williams' three previous solo albums were fine singer-songwriter meditations, [...]

MP3: Wooden Shjips - Phonograph Here's an outtake from West by Wooden Shjips , that originally appeared as a bonus 7 inch included in the LP, but now has been released widely. It's a business as usual track for the dudes, and business is gooood.

With the more northern parts of Philly already establishing themselves as the "epicenter" of the local music scene over the last few years and West Philly's music scene always being an interesting and unique breed of animal unto itself (but often being so goddamn far from everywhere else), where are inhabitants of South Philly to go to consistently get their music fix near their hood? Well, the guys behind Phonographic Arts now have your answer. Thanks to the Little Bar . We had a chance to chat and share a hand-rolled cigarette with Phonographic Arts founder Cliff [...]

So we are super phased to get our hands on the physical copy of Wooden Shjips new LP, West. In 2009, after three releases for Dovecote Records and one open-heart surgery, Tim Williams was ready to turn the page. He moved from Brooklyn to a strange, strange land, Los Angeles. "I needed to get out of New York and come to a place where I didn't know anyone," he says. "Sometimes you have to go to a place where you don't know the streets, the people, the cool bars, the good record stores ... I like to throw myself out there, and this has been a great place to recharge." The [...]

If you're looking for the perfect soundtrack to the dark cold days of winter ahead of us look no further then Tim Williams' latest release Careful Love , a record that is loaded with melancholy songs detailing the fragile nature of our lives. It's a deep, touching piece of work that should certainly challenge for spots on many year end lists, and one that continues to build the style and scope of Williams' music as he becomes a better and more refined songwriter. Tim was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to provide us with [...]
![Broke One [Voyager]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2103384_lg.jpg)
Broke One's new remix to Daft Punk's Voyager is innovative but nothing new coming from the Italian-based DJ who continues to amaze me. He has an impressive history producing great remix after remix and this one, safe to say, is ready for the collection. The hand-claps and sporadic synth drops separate this track from other DP mixes that have came this way. I'm a big fan of both these artists so this is a bit of a win-win. These last three tracks are exceptional oldies but there's no shortage of excellent Broke One [...]
New record captures first glimpse at earliest intelligible recording of the human voice

So Punxsy Phil predicts a long winter and the weatherman forecasts some snow for the Mid-Atlantic. Welcome to February! On a positive note, plenty of big names and quite a few locals are on the scene during the mid-week. Tuesday Where to start? Usually you have a list of bands like this on the weekend, but you take them when you can get them. DC is the place to be with four great shows. Photo from [...]

Monday: Glass Ghost @ Glasslands 9pm $6 Following a nice, long holiday weekend I'm sure a lot of you will be looking to get back into the show going right away on Monday night. Unfortunately there isn't too much going on, but there is this show at Glasslands. Glass Ghost is a new side project from Eliot Krimsky of the awesome band Flying. I've only checked out their Myspace so far but based on that and the reputation of Flying I'd have to say that they're definitely worth taking a chance on. [...]
It hasn't taken long for New York's Phonograph to make an impression in the music industry. Since forming in 2005, the band has achieved critical acclaim from Billboard magazine, American Songwriter Magazine, and The New York Times. They've toured with Wilco, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and they just played [...]
