Phosphorescent Cover Leonard Cohen Earlier this week, M. Ward performed a live rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye," and now Phosphorescent have a live take of their own — following up on a string of classic covers by Matthew Houck and friends of the Beatles , Neil Young , and Bob Dylan . As Birds Need Feet points out, Dead Oceans shared the above cut from Phosphorescent's new live EP , Ghost Lights, this week.
Brooklyn's Phosphorescent bring their indie sound to Leonard Cohen's 'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye'

Following their success from last year's adored album 'Here's To Taking it Easy,' indie country folk band Phosphorescent are bringing their laid back Alabama vibes to the U.K. Kicking off after performances at Coachella (U.S.A) and Primavera (Barcelona) Festivals, from Monday 30th of May the band will be ready to hit the road in the U.K. Londoners will be pleased to know their finale gig will take place at London's Heaven on Tuesday 7th June. Their full Tour Dates are as follows: European and UK Live dates: Read [...]

As we've repeatedly touted, Bonnaroo isn't just about all the great bands that are playing amongst the tents and stages. There are a plethora of activities to keep you busy while you wait to see your favorite act. For all those cinephiles out there the Cinema Tent will once again be offering up 24 hours a day of programming running from Thursday afternoon through Sunday night. This year's highlights include special screenings of 30 Minutes Or Less and Garden State, which will feature a Q&A session with Aziz Ansari and Zach Braff afterwords, respectively. [...]

My experience with bands recording covers records is that the proceeding follow up LP always tends to be much richer from that experience (see Phosphorescent's Here's To Taking It Easy after To Willie and Vetiver's Tight Knit post Thing of the Past ). Think of it as a rock & roll masters class. Fresh off his Ty Rex EP of T. Rex covers, Ty Segall is set to return with Goodbye Bread —yes that adorable hound photograph is the actual cover art—on June 21st via Drag City . And [...]
Providence folkies The Low Anthem perform a delicate version of Phosphorescent's 'The Mermaid Parade' in Boston's Old South Church

Matthew Houck of Phosphorescent recently performed a barefoot Take Away Show in and on the roof of his Brooklyn apartment for Toms' One Day Without Shoes —an annual event held on April 5th to raise awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child's life. Houck performed two songs off his 2007 album Pride : "At Death, A Proclamation" and "My Dove, My Lamb." The latter of which is particularly stunning with Houck singing quietly over a plucked and swirling electric guitar. Watch after the jump. [...]
Video: Phosphorescent Play A Take Away Show Phosphorescent's Matthew Houck went barefoot for this year's One Day Without Shoes , an annual event that raises awareness about the plight of children in developing countries led by TOMS , for two performances filmed by La Blogothèque's "A Take Away Show." The first take, a stunning electric guitar-backed version of "My Dove, My Lamb" in Houck's Brooklyn rehearsal space, is above. He also performed "At Death, A Proclamation," which is worth watching — if only to admire Houck's impressive rooftop balancing act.

The coming week sees a much welcomed change to the working week, for me any way. A little more time to listen to a bit more music (maybe), and write a bit more (hopefully). My early working life was a bit feral really when I look back – in style rather than substance. And that rather suited me – it took me an awful long time to settle down to being within the confines of an office. So a little time to exhale, to look at life a fresh. Shake it all up a bit. Nothing [...]

It certainly seems like a time of change in the world of Coachella Music & Arts Festival . The premiere SoCal festival, well known for its perfect lineups, beautiful venue, and amazing atmosphere is in the adolescent stage of existence, and with it, like people, come new developments. Coachella completely switched things up this year, bringing in a whole different generation of headliners (Kings of Leon, the Strokes, Kanye West, and the Arcade Fire), a series of interesting reunions (London Suede, Duran Duran, DFA1979), several popular acts (Animal Collective, The Black [...]

According to the new, popular track from indie-Americana wizards Phosphorescent , "It's hard to be humble…when you're from Alabama." However, talking to Phosphorescent front man/composer Matthew Houck, I would assume it's natural to be humble when you're from Alabama. The band's lively, well-written tunes are starting to get some recognition from the public: Houck landed a live spot on Letterman , and they're about to play some of the biggest American and European festivals around. Despite all the excitement, Houck remains quiet and distant, never bringing his voice above a mumble, and never going off on egocentric tangents. [...]

Who: Phosphorescent in the Mojave Tent In 3 or Fewer Words: Luminescent Americana. I'll Remember This Forever Because: Phosphorescent's quick-and-dirty 30-minute just after noon Sunday proves that there's always a reason to hit Coachella early, even if it is the final day of the fest and the burning star in the sky and pains in your feet seem to have increased tenfold. A series of bearded Americana and blue-jeans indie folk, Phosphorescent's (aka singer-songwriter Matthew Houck and Co.) set kicked out the shitkicker jams with the riffy, piano-pounded [...]

This is so good it is a repost of a repost. The ultimate in lazy blogging, but totally justified when it is (MM faves) Strand of Oaks covering the sublime Wolves by (MM faves) Phosphorescent . So thanks to the great Slowcoustic for alerting us, and to The Key for the original posting. This just needs to be heard by as many people as possible so no apologies for putting it up here too. If you haven't yet, check out the back catalogues from both - absolutely stunning stuff. [...]

One of my favourite songs in the last decade is Wolves by Phosphorescent. It just is. The song echoes, pines and just hits the spot. The song is from the album "Pride" released on Dead Oceans in 2007 and it still kills me, but it is the death march. The combination of the ukulele and the scratchy wounded vocals of Matthew Houck create a epic Slowcoustic track for the all time list. Recently good friend Tim Showalter, or as you know him Strand of Oaks, recorded a cover of this track over on WXPN's "The Key" in Philadelphia [...]
