Sometimes the lowest point in a songwriter's life can be the most fertile. Case in point for Phosphorescent's front-man who delivered a tight album when times got tough.
Los Angeles rockers Dawes, New Orleans piano legend Dr. John, UK soul singer Lianne La Havas and Brooklyn Americana outfit Phosphorescent are among the 20 acts announced today for the 2013 XPoNential Music Festival, happening July 26th through the 28th at Wiggins Park and the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ. If there was ever any doubt that Phosphorescent (the nam de plum of Matthew Houck) has been playing music since 2002, seeing Houck and company in a live setting should squash any skepticism. But a vast majority of the crowd at Lincoln Hall (Chicago, IL) on April 13 wouldn't have known that, hell, I heard a few members of the audience asking "Who's up next" and "what type of music they play" just before Phosphorescent took the stage. The show was sold out, so I haven't the slightest idea how they got in. The [...]

Sometimes, the act of stripping a song down to is barest of bones exposes fresh layers connective tissue between the listener and performer. Sometimes, the biggest songs have the most humble of beginnings. Sometimes, it’s just a real pleasure to hear someone sit and play a song on acoustic guitar. Taken from last autumn's debut album Everything Touching , Tall Ships have cut a live, solo acoustic version of the track 'Phosphorescence' and made it available as a free download. Just for you. The original's heady, kinetic stomp is gone, and [...]
Phosphorescent is Alabama native Matthew Houck , a singer-songwriter who draws comparisons as varied as Bonnie "Prince" Billy to Fleet Foxes . Houck, who now resides in Brooklyn, just made a fascinating album, Muchacho . The release is getting a lot of well-deserved buzz, which explains why he sold out a Saturday night show at Lincoln Hall . If you snagged a ticket, consider yourself lucky to be able to see a rising artist. Strand of Oaks opens.

Phosphorescent (which is led by this guy who hangs out in Athens, GA named Matthew Houck) released their new LP Muchacho last month via Dead Oceans. The music video we have for you is for "Song For Zula", the second track off Muchacho , an LP that is all about drinking your woman off your mind. Sort of. Matthew Houck helped direct the video, which is about six minutes of slow motion. So if you've got important things to do (no you don't) then you may lack the mental dexterity to [...]

Phosphorescent "Song for Zula" Phosphorescent 's " Song for Zula " came on the radio today as I was driving to work. It had an impact on me because I was driving the 520 bridge across Lake Washington and I felt like I was in a movie and this song was the soundtrack. Just one of those song's that happens to fit the moment [...]

True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]
OK. I know it has been awhile since I last posted. And looking back on the last few weeks, even when I have posted, it has been a bit sporadic. Not to mention that there hasn’t been a new episode of Mix Tape Radio On Folk Radio UK for going on two iterations. I’ve been a bit swamped with work and projects and feeling a bit burnt out. And whenever I finally find a chance to sit down at the computer to attempt to do some HI54LOFI’n, I would get hit by a wave of “Why bother? No [...]

Check out my photos of Phosphorescent at the Troubadour over at Stereogum .
The Troubadour was completely sold-out for the stunning combination of Phosphorescent and Strand of Oaks. Phosphorescent have been gaining traction on their latest album, Muchacho . Matthew Houck slashed away at his Fender Jazzmaster throughout the evening, visiting his discography and managing to work in covers of Randy Newman ("Days Of Heaven") and Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter ("Storms Never Last") before appropriately closing out the evening with "Los Angeles." Check out the gallery of photos above. [...]

On his sixth full-length album, Phosphorescent, aka Matthew Houck, channels the ‘70s with a collection of indie folk tracks that wouldn’t be out of place at jam band session around a bonfire. “Muchacho” hits just the right note between more classic, straightforward folk music and incorporating different, complimentary styles and genres. “A Charm / A Blade” alternates between a slower, folky style and a fuller, ska-esque sound. Though the two techniques seem inherently different and disconnected, Phosphorescent manages to create one cohesive, interesting song by keeping many of the musical components—instrumentation, vocals—the same even though the interpretations are [...]

Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi “You’re never going to see them play a place as small as the Troubadour again” a fellow concertgoer proclaimed after witnessing Phosphorescent’s sold out show. The moniker of multi-instrumentalist Matthew Houck, Phosphorescent is a fully realized sonic experience on stage. Weaving in pristine, haunting melodies with aching lyrics, it’s easy to see much bigger venues on the horizon for Houck and company. Excited fans frequently shouted out song requests from albums past and latest release, Muchacho . The night’s encore ended with the popular and appropriate, [...]
