If you're not already familiar with Phosphorescent , make a note to do so. Basically, Matthew Houck is Phosphorescent, but someone has to fill in on the other instruments, right? Right. Houck writes the songs, including the material on the 2005 breakout (masterpiece) album Aw Come Aw Wry , and he brings good friends along to supply two drum kits, four horns, two tambourines, a extra guitar, and a bass. I had the pleasure of catching this group in concert at SXSW two years ago, not long after experiencing the satisfaction [...]

Today, the dull grey spring morning in London was brightened up for me by an email waiting in my inbox when I got into work. It was from occasional Daily Growl contributor Reverend War Character, with news about Phosphorescent who he's been "mildly obsessed" with ever since seeing him plug in a fairy light-bedecked jacket at a gig at Barden's Boudoir at the end of last year and proceed to play a set of what he described as "a twilight zone illuminated by Matthew Houck's plug-in jacket and iridescent songs" You see, Phosphorescent is really just [...]
There are a lot of good shows tonight. This has been a pretty crazy day and I'm running behind, so I'm just going to list them... Baltimore's Two if by Sea is joined by DC locals The Alphabetical Order and Paul Michel at IOTA . You don't get a much better regional music showcase than this. Two if by Sea - Summer Borne For Sleep The Alphabetical Order - Submarines Paul Michel - The Ways and Means [...]
2 years ago, apparently, a band called Phosphorescent released an album called Aw Come Aw Wry. I never heard peep about it, but I don't get around much. I swirl around the windy streets of my neighbourhood and the neighbouring neighbourhoods, but I really don't go much farther than that. Anyway, excuses aside, I missed this album when it was new, so I'll appreciate it now. (thank you, Michael S.) Phosphorescent - "Not A Heel" A hot stumbly waltz. Like a flower, a drunk daisy, ambles dazedly down the street, to home, alone. The neon buzzes and bounces off her [...]
David Byrne The former Talking Head, David Byrne, brings a fairly incredible line-up to Carnegie Hall, and then plays there himself. The former Modern Lover, Jonathan Richman, continues his stint at the Knitting Factory. So where's Jerry Harrison in all of this? Friday, 2/2 Adem , Devendra Banhart , Vashti Bunyan , Cibelle , CocoRosie , Vetiver at Carnegie Hall. ---- (mp3: Adem - Launch Yourself , Devendra Banhart - Quedata Luna , CocoRosie - Noah's Ark [...]
Sorry for the lack of content, recently. Have been busy working on my latest book, The Tao of Who Moved Jonathan L. Seagull's Cheesecake: A Guide to the Kama Sutra for Grown People who Like to Read Books Written for Retarded Children. Bu

I wasn't looking for a new favorite band, I was happy with my fill. But then, out of the blue, along came Phosphorescent, I remember seeing something about them someplace or another and being drawn to investigate what kind of band would write a song with the title 'Joe Tex, These Taming Blue'... The song grabbed me immediately, something about it resonated within me, it spoke to me, held my hand, kissed me and told me everything would be ok. I was immediately a fan, I was on board and before I knew it - here I was with a [...]
A friend recently asked me to do a little business for him, and that business was check out this band, Phosphorescent. I accepted the challenge and find myself quite anxious to post the results, the band is really solid. The band is basically structured around singer/guitarist Matthew Houck and as the Phosphorescent MySpace [...]
