While we think that we're not great lovers of covers here at MM, I'm beginning to suspect that this is actually a pretty long way from the reality of things. Especially, as just lately, there seems to have been a plethora of excellent cover versions hitting our iTunes playlists. So here are a few that we've picked up from over the net and fellow bloggers that are well worth a listen or two...we have Phosphorescent covering Lucinda Williams , The Sparrow & The Workshop doing The Cars , Duke Spirit's [...]

Welcome to our longest ever post, and a whole bucketful of great songs. Last weekend, Barry-Sean came with me to the End of the Road Festival and outside of the musical orgy that is SxSW, we agreed it is the best festival we've ever had the pleasure of attending. In fact he's been writing about it ever since. Here's what he has to say.... Having arrived early on Friday afternoon (yes, we missed secret guests Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell on Thursday night due to a prior 5-a-side football engagement), and after popping up tents we headed [...]
Five new covers of the Beatles, Paul McCartney, P.J. Harvey, George Michael, and Katy Perry.

Ever since first hearing this recording on a Beatles covers album dubbed Let It Be Revisted , which came with a recent issue of Mojo , I was hoping it would see an official release or hit the Web so that more people could enjoy it. Well, thanks to YouTube, a stream of Phosphorescent's gorgeously bruised yet hopeful rendition of Lennon/McCartney classic "Across the Universe" has arrived . Just as he did with cuts from his excellent Willy Nelson covers record, Matthew Houck has turned in a patient, nuanced version here, in which honey-dipped vocals [...]

Fresh from seeing a stunning Phosphorescent show at the End of the Road Festival at the weekend (full review to come), we find that they have also contributed to the latest free cover CD from Mojo magazine . It is another Mojo 're-interpretation' of a classic album - this time the Beatles and Let It Be . Other artists include The Jim Jones Revue , The Besnard Lakes , John Grant and Wilko Johnson . So here is the cover of Across The Universe [...]

The last few weeks have been busy on my end, prompting us to stick to thematic posts and reposts. But the floodgates never close on the inbox passalongs and blogsources - and with almost three years of posts under our lifebelts, the rising tide of flotsam and jetsam falls easily into line with the water table. Looks like it's high time for another edition of our popular (Re)Covered series, featuring new and newly-discovered songs that bobbed to the surface just a little too late to make it into the original posts where [...]

When the songs are that good it's no surprise that there is a pair of albums out in the next month or so featuring covers of the late, great Townes van Zandt's work. The first one is Riding the Range - The songs of Townes Van Zandt , there's an extra angle on this one as part of the proceeds from the sale goes to the QE2 Activity Centre , the album features 20 tracks in all from a great selection of [...]

Anyone who considers themselves to be a fan of Americana and/or Folk music should have heard of End Of The Road festival by now. Since it first began back in 2006 some of the biggest and best artists of these two genres have graced it's stages. From singer-songwriters such as Ryan Adams, Bon Iver and Conor Oberst to mega-bands like Explosions In The Sky, Fleet Foxes, The Hold Steady and Okkervil River, the festivals line-up has never once disappointed. Even by their own high standards the organisers have stepped it up another level again for [...]

Yesterday we pointed out how the kids of Los Campesinos! doesn't seem to understand the concept of a "break." You could say the same thing about Deer Tick . In just the last two years, the Providence, Rhode Island outfit have released two full-lengths and an EP. Plus, they've toured the country about 38 separate times. So, needless to say, we're not at all surprised to learn the band has mapped out yet another road trip. In support of their latest studio effort The Black Dirt Sessions (grab a [...]

And here's another one that I have been listening to quite a lot during the last few months, it was his last album "Here's To Taking It Easy" that made me start listening to all of is his amazing albums and music. Don't miss out! Phosphorescent, fronted by Matthew Houck, is an indie folk/alt country band that is often compared to Iron and Wine, Will Oldham, and Neil Young. Phosphorescent currently resides in Brooklyn, New York and is signed to independent label Dead Oceans. Houck's career began in 2000 when he released the Hipolit album under the name Fillup Shack. [...]

Just got back from a long trip that went like this: Atlanta, GA to Columbus, OH to Palo Alto, CA to Columbus, OH to Atlanta, GA. The Ohio portions were over two special weekends that had me driving through the cornfields of my old stomping grounds. I found myself in Columbus, Coshocton, Orrville, and my old town of Mansfield. Phosphorescent powered much of this journey and I just ran across this new video when checking our inbox. Phosphorescent - It's Hard To Be Humble When You're From Alabama [...]
When you think of bands that call the borough of Brooklyn home it's typically hipster leaning indie rock acts that immediately come to mind, and not ones that have an affinity for pedal steel guitars and booze-fueled country rock like Phosphorescent . Originally conceived by Matthew Houck as his recording moniker, over the last few years Phosphorescent has blossomed into a full band thanks in part to their fantastic Willie Nelson tribute album To Willie . Earlier this year the alt.country band - who recently had their tour [...]
