Well 2011 is certainly off to a rocky start. First, there was the major shift in responsibility at work that left me stressed and scrambling for free time to do TWIAPC updates not to mention time to see friend and family. Then this weekend I received some totally surreal news that will completely rearrange my life in the next few weeks and months. In the short time I've had since getting this news I've begun prioritizing things and realized I won't have time to keep posting right now. Which really breaks my heart because this here little blog is something [...]

Time for another journey (a two-parter this time) through the hallowed basements, bedrooms, and home studios of some of the most interesting D.I.Y. projects to grace the Ripple mailbag. Just like before, our hat gets tipped to the D.I.Y. musician, producing and creating when a whole world of naysayers may be standng before him (or her). All for the love of music. And what a varied set we have for you waveriders today. The Photons - Glory! EP [...]
US multi-person band Photons has gone on " indefinite hiatus ", which basically means that the band is no more. Shame really as the band wrote some wonderfully charming pop songs. And apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so ! + Shadow + Choose + Where Were You Last Night + This Must Be Love More to come…

This week's podcast features San Francisco band Photons , a seven-person group who first caught our ears with their self-titled debut EP of Brit-influenced chamber pop. The band began as a new project for drummer Calvin Liu, who found kinship with a talented group of multi-instrumentalists and, perhaps improbably, former metal singer James Parrish. The Glory! EP followed Photons in 2009, further showcasing the band's knack for rich, crazy-catchy orchestral pop, and built anticipation for their first full length record. And now here's the bad news. [...]
Modest Mouse – No One's First, and You're Next. Download "Satellite Skin" (mp3). The 8 songs on this EP are oddments from Modest Mouse's previous two albums, Good News for People Who Like Bad News and We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. While these songs might have seemed out of place on those long-players, they jounce together into a solid but diverse EP. From the banjo driven tracks to guitar abstraction to Modest Mouse's pop style, it includes a few of 2009's best songs from short-players. Evening Magazine – The Ride Across Lake Constance. Download "Apple Eye" (mp3). [...]
post and original illustration by chris duffy It was probably the most sterile environment that has ever housed a musical experience that I have witnessed. Then again, it was chamber music. The Apple store , like most of their lot, feels like the interior of a spaceship. Fittingly, the majority of it seems to be constructed from glass. Artist: [...]

Maybe it's just because I've stopped listening to the normal airwaves radio because NYC radio SUX, but has there been no real summer jam this year? There's a few indie things, sure, like maybe Das Rascist's Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell (via Pitchfork) or The Temper Trap's Sweet Disposition (video), but what about the mainstream stuff? Where's the Lil Wayne Lollipop of this summer? Kid Cudi? Really? And that Flo-Rida song...first, it's nowhere NEAR as good as Low, and second, Eiffel 65??? Maybe Boom Boom Pow...maybe She Wolf (video) - it's got a [...]

Damn, been a very long time since I last posted. I would keep saying that "life is busy," but this is really just a permanent condition and part of the post-college, "responsibility" thing that I am discovering. Been back in Lisbon for a week now. Paris was a wonderful break while I was there, filled mainly with trips to and from various food landmarks that my brother has discovered there. This included one of the best meals I have ever had, although those of us who ate there swore a death oath not to spread the word. Don't want the [...]

Summer has finally begun. What better way than to spend an evening with friends and take some silly pictures, play "rock band" on Nintendo Wii and pig out on junk food. Who knows, this could be you in the future: "Hurrah!" San Francisco's Photons feature the basson, glockenspiel, clarinet and a random assortment of instruments such as the electro-harp, sod-bottle perussion and bulbut tarange (Indian banjo). Photons - Where were you last night (mp3) [...]

San Francisco 8-piece Photons has swiftly won over new fans this year with an energetic brand of indie pop that features bassoon, glockenspiel, clarinet, & a full chest of bizarre instruments such as the electro-harp, soda-bottle percussion & the bulbul tarang (Indian banjo). When Calvin Liu began to form Photons in early 2008, the original intention was simply to give band members an opportunity to learn a secondary instrument. (Liu switched from bass to drums, for example, but he has since returned to bass.) Soon realizing the potential for a band with so many members and multi-instrumentalists, [...]
MP3: Photons "Where Were You Last Night" San Francisco 8-piece Photons have a free mp3 for grabs. Titled " Where Were You Last Night ", the track is taken off their new EP out next Tuesday June 23rd. Download here , do check them out on myspace . it's pretty easy to tell that this is a band not just to be heard, but to be seen

Here at Tympanogram, we (Andy and I) struggle at times to sift through the emails we receive from bands offering up their music for review. Of what we receive most often we are sent terrible remixes of songs we probably never liked in the first place. Also received often are links to music videos, and/or links to unknown band's promotional pages offering up their new EP or record. These unknown band emails we receive are all similar in that it is easy to tell bands use a template and insert the publication or blog name somewhere in [...]

Photons are an 8 piece band from San Francisco that managed to get lost in the shuffle. Last year they sent me their outstanding self titled EP. I listened. I loved. I never posted about it. D'oh! I was not going to make the same mistake this time with their new EP, Glory! . Photons' first EP drew some high praise from critics and grabbed some comparisons to The Walkmen. I could definitely hear the similarities, but for some strange reason their early stuff really reminded me of Amsterdam's Bingo Trappers (though not quite as lo-fi). The [...]
The Photons are a San Francisco got my attention with the song "This Must Be Love". It's a wonderful little indie pop number which always gets my attention. They don't seem to the typical octet. To me they aren't on the Arcade Fire side of orchestra/classical influences. To me involves more of the upbeat pop like Los Campesinos. It also helps they use something like the glockenspiel but also use the Bassoon and Clarinet. The Photons don't overwhelming wow me with originality but they have some sort of charm that makes their [...]

by zerone Pop Out Player I was a free and lazy bird this weekend but was keen to jump at opportunity. Sometimes it's about putting yourself in a comfortable position to act when called upon. We'll sidestep the abyss of philosophical thought to heed the words of T.S. Elliot with an excerpt from his poem Rannoch, By Glencoe . [...]
I was a the Blue Moon myself. Lot's of friends were there. I had a good time. That's not really what this post is about though. What we're really talking about is the free track from the San Fransisco band Photons second EP, the GLORY! EP, which dropped this week at Insound. MP3: "Where Were You [...]
