Though punk band Dead Moon called it quits a few years back, Pierced Arrows have now risen from the ashes. In addition, the Portland-based band have announced today that they've signed with Vice Records, and their album, Descending Shadows will be out on February 2, 2010. What a great Groundhog's Day gift! The album art is to the left, and check out Viceland for a stream of "Paranoia" from the new album. We're looking forward to more information as it comes!

We miss Dead Moon, but they never really left. Fred and Toody Cole retired that band in 2006 and sure enough, up sprouted Pierced Arrows in its place months later. Word from our inbox is that the Coles, along with new drummer Kelly Halliburton, have opted to release the Arrows' sophomore set of crusty punk tunes through Vice . Indeed, the label plans to share Descending Shadows on February 2nd, an effort the trio recorded at Portland's Buzz or Howl Studios and according to the press release, "mastered to vinyl lacquer per tradition at Fred and Toody's [...]

Pierced Arrows Pierced Arrows , the reincarnation of Dead Moon had no trouble in dishing out their dirty, noise rock to the Maxwell's crowd this past Saturday, October 10th. The trio did what they do best, which is plow through a set of angst [...]

On October 17th, Scion, aka the car company, will celebrate one of music's most rocking genres, aka garage rock, with the first ever Scion Garage Fest . The 43 confirmed acts, which will play four of Portland's finest venue, includes Roky Erickson, Black Lips, Jay Reatard, The Almighty Defenders, King Khan and BBQ Show, The Dutchess and the Duke, Gino Washington, and Japanese Motors among others. Oh, and did we mention the whole shindig is free? Just hit up scion.com to RSVP and get all the other necessary info.

The festival was insanely good (even though I missed much of what was amazing about it, including Deelay Ceelay 's performance and Jeffrey Jerusalem' s performance). There are a few interesting photo reviews of the first two days over on the Willamette Week's blog you can check out until Ben's (unpromising) photo set is put up. Explode Into Colors. The headliners were all great [...]

I feel weird about posting two episodes of Soft Focus in as many days, but this interview with Pierced Arrows is so great I had to share it right away. Sadly, VBS has this listed a "Dead Moon". Even if Pierced Arrows is a continuation (blah blah blah) it's a different band and the goal of interviews is to let people know what's going on with the interviewee in the present as well as the past. That little grumble aside, Toody and Fred are two of the most amazing people I've ever met and [...]

The Lollipop Shoppe - You Must Be A Witch ( buy ) "You're painting me green, you're talking obscene, you´re making my life into a dream, you're wearing your colours to be like the others..." Furious sixties garage rock from the one and only Fred Cole, who since played in countless different bands to finally achieve well-deserved underground popularity with the mighty Dead Moon in the nineties. At the ripe age of sixty, soul survivor Cole is still going strong with Pierced Arrows as we speak. Hats [...]
it goes like this. the weeds begat the lollipop shoppe. the lollipop shoppe begat zipper. zipper begat the rats. the rats begat dead moon. dead moon begat pierced arrows. yup, fred and toody have been at this since god were a boy. garage rock, punk, psyche and country wheezes spread out over forty years. and they're [...]

Halloween just snuck up on me. I don't know what I'm going to be and I still can't decide what to do this weekend. BENT will be happening, but I can't decide whether to drive it up to BHAM or wait until Saturday at the Funhouse. I hear last year's Halloween show, where they sold out a 500-person theater in Bellingham, was epic. PartMan PartHorse is releasing their album (see poster below) at the High Dive on Friday as well, and from what I hear that promises to be a pretty a fairly exciting set. For those in the costume [...]

Fred And Toody Cole from Dead Moon are back! This time with Kelly Halliburton (from every other PDX band) bashing the shit out of the drums. If you caught last years single ("In My Brain b/w Caroline") than you know how fucking great it is to have this combo making music again. The debut LP (2008's 'Straight From The Heart') only makes the above statement that much more powerful. And after a brief West Coast stint with the Black Lips they're hitting the road again and covering much of the US. Below are the dates and some [...]

Following the recent demise of the perennially underrated and recently anthologized Dead Moon, core members Fred and Toody Cole have picked up right where they left of with Pierced Arrows. The band sounds, well... pretty much exactly like Dead Moon but that's not a bad thing at all. And truth be told its a pretty nice niche to occupy for fans new and old looking for more following their recent adulation. They pick up a new drummer in the form of Kelly Halliburton who keeps as steady a beat as punctuated any DM release I suppose. Fred's strangled wail is [...]

WFMU presents Selected Sounds from the Free Music Archive vol. 1 . This compilation previews 21 of the thousands of tracks that'll be freely available under Creative Commons licenses when the fully interactive Free Music Archive website launches this November. We're working with a group of fellow curators to fill the library with great music, and this sampler represents a piece of what WFMU brings to the table. We'll be handing out free copies of the CD at the July 4th Sonic Youth/Feelies show (we're lending special support as [...]
