As much as I want to, I will not be posting any cuts from the new Spiritualized LP, Sweet Heart Sweet Light, which came into my possession yesterday. It was lovingly packaged with posters, flyers and stickers, which I'm trying my best to apply to every available surface in my home. Alas, as the official [...]
Here's a classic bit of beach party science fiction music from 1967. It's the sound of volleyball being played with lasers, of buff alien surfers, and of shaggy bowl haircuts and sunglasses. It's from the Les Yper Sound EP, which also featured the track Psyche Rock which formed the basis for the Futurama theme. This is very much in the same vein, blipping and whooshing about like an excited labrador. Tremendous fun. Pierre Henry - Too Fortiche (alternate [...]
A new dynamism exists; one fueled by science and fired by revolution. One which has followed Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism to a point where they must be left behind. Where they attempted to revolutionize "art" we must change life. We seek a form of action which transcends the separation between art and politics: it is [...]
Pierre Henry documentary - The Art of Sounds (by straypixel ) Experimental French composer Pierre Henry, one of the pioneers of musique concrète, is the subject of this documentary that traces his development of a new sound that shocked the music world. During the 1950s, the radical innovator and his colleague Pierre Schaeffer created a unique form of music based on electronically modified environmental noises.
In commercial terms, Ivy is but a footnote in the career of bassist Adam Schlesinger, who between his duties in Fountains Of Wayne and his work as a prolific songwriter for hire has made far greater claims on the public's attention. But in a world where diffident cool trumped sugary snark, the trio of Schlesinger, [...]
May 8, 1945: Victory in Europe. Millions flooded the streets to celebrate the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany and the formal end of World War II in the European Theater. In the northern Algerian market town of Setif, a victory parade of 5,000 Algerian Muslims ended in clashes between the marchers and the local French [...]
Super -scarce box set released by Fractal Records (France) in 1998. "The music of French composer Igor Wakhevitch is as difficult to summarize as any modern classical or avant-garde performer you care to name. He never stayed put in one particular idiom or another for long, exhibiting as much affinity for psychedelic rock as he did for opera, modern dance, and minimalist synthesizer pieces. Given his apprenticeship under Terry Riley, and having studied with Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Schaeffer, Wakhevitch's eclectic mix of styles and timbres isn't surprising. What is surprising is that his work remained obscure for [...]

You're probably going to laugh at me, but I ate pho for the first time today. It was delicious. Super-spicy and weird and great. When you carry out from this local Vietnamese place they put raw beef in a little plastic baggie, and it is your job to very quickly transfer the beef into the piping hot soup so that it can cook all the way through. Somehow it works. It goes great with fresh spring rolls filled with pork, shrimp and herbs, too. Sunday is here again. It is time for another mix tape. I'm pretty sure [...]

We've had two copies of this album pass through the store in the last month, and both were snatched up by collectors within a day of their being priced and made available. This hinted to Mark and I that it must be an album worthy of such intense appreciation. I decided I'd try to hunt down a copy of the recording to share with everyone. Little did I know that it's really easy to find a digitized version of the LP on the Internet. This wasn't nearly as hard as sharing the Robert Curtis Smith record, about which no information [...]
Unlike my Top 12 Bands 2007 , this year is a throwback to all good things '80s and '90s (kinda-sorta). Because I like to blame Tim Peysar for my musical deviations, I will continue to do so for he led me, kicking and screaming, against my will, against my better intentions, against the will of my wallet, to buy all the Cure deluxe re-issues. As I'd like to give him that full credit - I'll also give him The Radio Dept. - I continued to buy re-issues of The Smiths (73 Singles: hawt!), and a [...]

Bouncing about the internets lately has been a fascinating YouTube video highlighting Pierre Henry's 1967 track "Psyché Rock" and its immediate influence on the theme song to the animated series Futurama . As for the similarities - glaringly obvious; but who is Pierre Henry? Oh, just "the first formally educated musician to devote his energies to the electronic medium." ( All Music ) (more...)

Well, Lindstrom was pretty fun .... he played some good stuff, although it never took on much momentum. People seemed like they wanted to really go off but his set was all build-up, not many peaks. ("I Feel Space" served the purpose I guess -- filled the floor and got the most strobe-lighting -- but even that's a pretty slow-burning track, huge hit or no.) Biggest reaction during the rest of the night was for "Show Me Love" . I haven't decided if that's awesome or kinda sad. Already got my tix for Optimo [...]
