As well as releasing his first major video production for the song [untitled], SOULBOT2 shot up the College Music Journal hip-hop charts to spot 14 in December of last year. If there's one thing the blogosphere has a lot of at the moment, its interesting and experimental hip-hop. From the work of Knxwledge to the bizarre and yet wonderful Gonjasufi , there really is something for any and every type of weirdo. Pig Pen 's new beat tape strikes an interesting balance between the odd and the archetypal. The record jumps from 50's horror score like strings to freaky and bubbling synths, while simultaneously having an affair with old-skool jazz, with a huge amount [...]
Anybody Can Be Cool...But Awesome Takes Practice by Pig Pen New beat tape from Detroit producer Pig Pen. I'm currently three tracks into this thing, and I've got to say this dude is pretty diverse. The swirling, electronic keyboards are a fun and surprising switch from the chopped and looped little girl voices that eerily sing on the track before. The dude's sample set is really wide, and he knows how to execute each sound with finesse.

As Pearl Jam continues to celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2011, the seminal Seattle rock band's lead singer, Eddie Vedder, has announced plans to release a new solo album and live DVD that will feature Vedder exclusively playing the ukulele. The aptly titled Ukulele Songs will hit stores on May 31 and mix decade old Vedder originals that have only been performed live, as well as covers and a take on Pearl Jam's 2002 tune Can't Keep. The companion DVD - Water On The Road - will feature selections culled from a pair of August 2007 [...]
The three disc Europe '72 release not only provided some remarkable versions of Dead standards, but also debuted a great deal of new material, including this one. Due to his declining health, the release also marks the end of Pigpen's contributions to the band. He didn't go quietly however, as he plays his ass off, leaving his mark all over this record.

I want to be the guy @ 0:20 . WhooO! This is from the documentary film Festival Express, and includes some of the best footage ever filmed of Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan, and some great guitar-play by Jerry Garcia. Otis Redding would have been proud, and Chris Robinson would be influenced... ;)

As 1982 turned into 1983, the Grateful Dead , as per custom, were onstage at the Oakland Auditorium, bringing in the new year. Their set that night was an uneven one, and during a somewhat tepid "(Turn On Your) Lovelight," Grateful Dead rhythm guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir brought Etta James on stage, and immediately, the energy shot up several notches. The combination may have seemed an unusual one, but Etta brought the Dead back to an important part of their roots - when Pigpen , an unruly and low down blues [...]
All right, Deadheads, I know you're out there. Here's a treat. A collection of Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan's solo acoustic recordings, mostly from his apartment. Some of these, like Katie Mae and She's Mine, were performed with the Dead; some are standard blues classics, and others are pop hits of the day [...]
