Born from jam sessions in the aftermath of punk, Pigbag gathered steam after convincing Simon Underwood to join the fun following his departure from The Pop Group. The band signed to Dick O'Dell's Y Records. Their first single was 1981's instrumental classic called "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag", a stonking tight groove with skronky horns and a title that gave a "wink, wink" to James Brown. It

Another great one from Fire records . No joke: I think this is one of the GREATEST RECORDS OF ALL TIME! It came out like thirty years ago and still sounds as fresh today as when it was first released and I still love it. I'm a sucker for great band names. I can't resist any band that starts their name with the word, "black," and I HAVE to listen to any band named Pigbag. That's got to be one of the best names EVER… Pigbag. How can you NOT take a listen? Especially when they have a song called, "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag." Pure. Awesomocitinessocity. I said, PURE AWESOMOCITINESSOCITY!!! In case you don't know what that means… if something is labeled "pure awesomocitinessocity," then that means they're on the same [...]

"Duh Duh Duh DUH! HOOPS!" Anyone who has ever visited Loftus Road will be familiar with the above refrain. In his misguided attempt to find out what pleasures lay in physical activity sports atheist Andy Miller, in his 2002 book 'Tilting at Windmills', became an occasional fan of Queens Park Rangers. His main observation when visiting the club was quite why they had adopted this piece of early 1980's new wave as their unofficial signature tune, quite why it had been embraced with such vigour. At the Millennium Stadium in 2003, QPR were given the choice of what anthem they [...]
Of all the band's to ever announce a reunion, the Pop Group are possibly the last name I ever expected to see on a billing any time soon; however a reunion of sorts is what is happening. Four dates - two in Italy and two in London - have been posted and these will be rare opportunities to Mark Stewart and his gaggle of post-punk / abstract jazz / dub / noise merchants in the flesh. The Pop Group
Nice jazzy post-punk funk stuff from early 1980's Britain.

Pigbag - Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag The recent outbreak of 'swine flu' had me thinking about pig-themed tracks and to be honest, I couldn't think of many good ones. Pink Floyd's "Pigs (Three Different Ones)", despite a welcome dig at Mary Whitehouse, is the weakest track on their Animals lp and the Beatles' "Piggies" is a similarly duff component of the ridiculously uneven White Album . Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" is classic heavy metal, but a bit too much for 8.30am on [...]

Better get this done before he's transferred | legged it | sent out on loan. [delete where applicable] This entry is an introductory to you about a group of musically inclined individuals who will be familiar to those at Gillespie Road, but not for everybody else. This group do not have a recording contract... and looking at their songs I can understand why... I'm not saying that spitefully, but as you will see their output 'borrows' from other sources. The group go under the name of the [...]

Been filling my earholes with stuff I picked up recently from mp3 blogs around the Web. Here's a bit, in no particular order (except I started with the longest song title [& running time 10:41] first): from Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun by Red Sparowes - Millions Starved & Became Skinnier & Skinnier While Our Leaders Became Fatter & Fatter from [...]

A friend came to stay the other week who I've known for twenty years. As is the case, we spent a fair amount of time discussing music. He's been more of a dance fan than 'indie' over the last decade, though those two genres are not mutually exclusive. he's been excavating the old dance stuff, and with my love of music from 1977-1982, it's clear that this era stamped its' mark on dance just as much as indie. Having picked up an Arthur Russell compilation (on whom more to come!), I thought I would post three dance classics: [...]
Time to deliver the funky jams you need to get your weekend started right. It's a nice and eclectic selection of tunes today, including a new Kid Loco tune remixed in a latin/western/disco stylee, a classic bit of funk from The Commodores, a slowly building ambient hip hop track from Alias and Roisin Murphy's great cover of the old Bryan Ferry hit. Anoraak are from France and are '80s revivalists

I had a real fantastic haul at the Dalston Oxfam Shop this last week. FYI the Oxjam events are starting today and going on through April. Go support cause it's a fantastic shop and organization and they've given me so much. But back to me . . . I picked up 3 of the early NME cassettes including this one, NME 004 and NME 005 . So if you look at all the NME cassettes listed here , if you add those with [...]
Pigbag was started by Chris Hamlyn in Cheltenham in late 1980. He recruited multi-instrumentalist Roger Freeman, (an old friend from his hometown Birmingham) along with Chris Lee (trumpet) & James Johnstone (guitar / alto sax). Later Drew "Chip" Carpenter (drums) & Mark Smith (bass), both old school mates of James & former members of his previous band Hardware , were recruited for informal rehearsals. It was at these jam sessions that their first hit was developed, from an idea Hamlyn had before the band was formed. Simon Underwood, previously of The Pop Group was [...]

Back from vacation ... recharged! Didn't track down any rare Costa Rican funk records in the rainforest but I've got some Brooklyn thrift store finds to post up in the next few days. Timbaland & Magoo - "We At It Again (Inst. Edit -8)" Pigbag, Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive (Stiff 1982) Big thx to Whitey for letting me borrow this one. Darker and weirder than the "Sunny Day"/"Brand New Pigbag" single. [...]
Nothing incredibly bizarre or rare today, just some nice tunes. I got some more soundtracks I'll be posting later in the week, including one to a movie that I can't even locate on the IMDB! I've never found a movie that wasn't on the IMDB before - do I get a cookie for that? Billy Idol - Flesh For Fantasy (Below The Belt Mix) Random 80s remix #1.
