Before coming to Australia, where I'm studying until December, I was repeatedly told that there is no local music scene in Sydney. "It's all DJs and clubs and $20 drinks and dress codes," they said. For some reason this tune reminds me of 'Shadow Falls' from Hello, Blue Roses. Not exactly sure why but there is something indescribably addictive about the sparseness. There is no semblance of chorus (or generic song elements for that matters), just lightly pounding (often indiscriminate) drums and the fanciest of dual layered ethereal vocals. Evelyn Morris leads a double life of sorts. A hardcore obsessed drummer on the Melbourne scene, she began to tinker around with the lesser used instruments that surrounded her. She recorded an album under the moniker Pikelet earlier this year, and turned out a product that is at times almost oceanic in nature. Today's side, A Bunch , has something that conjures up a island party; at least in the textures, the drums, and the way the lines carelessly wander and surround (in my imagined evening) smokey tiki candles. Australia's Pikelet (the alter-ego of songstress Evelyn Morris) is an up-and-coming artist out of Melbourne whose self-titled debut is seeing release in the coming days at a variety of album-launch partiest aross AUS. I've heard her compared to The Decemberists , Bright Eyes bandmate Maria Taylor , as well as Taylor's other band with Orenda Fink, Azure Ray .
