The shops may think that Christmas starts in mid October, but we all know that in reality you should only start preparing on 1st December with that first choccy in the advent calendar. So as a way of starting off the musical advent (and I'm in no way religious, but enjoy a reason for a gluttonous festival as much as the next man), we have a little Christmas/winter indie mixtape from the kind folk over at XO Publicity . A little change from the Slade/Wham/East 17 that you"re all hearing elsewhere. We've always done a [...]
I spent my thanksgiving holiday watching all three seasons of Mad Men so I could finally understand the hoopla over season 3's finale (and to appreciate BWE's brilliant recaps). After countless hours watching Jon Hamm being a terrible human being but not hating him because he is still f'in Jon Hamm, I realized that I very much enjoyed the show's credit music. It stands out in an almost eerie way

So it's Black Friday here in the States. The day Americans long for, kill for, save for. Nothing says American commercialism, greed, and chaos quite like this day. It's amazing at what people will do to save $100 off a TV. Last year, people died in the crush at Wal-Mart and then on top of that, retail announced that sales were still down. This year is predicted to be much like last year, in other words flat. It's kind of karmic justice in a round about way for both corporations and the greedy shoppers who fill their coffers. [...]
Today's free and legal mp3 downloads: XO Publicity has put together a free and legal album of holiday music, XO for the Holidays: Volume II . Since today marks the unofficial opening of the Christmas and Hannukah season in the US (and since my wife will finally consent to holiday music being played in the house), I thought it a good day to share some festive music. THe BAcksliders : "Christmas (Doesn't Have To Be So [...]

On Wednesday I saw the Broken Family Band's last ever London gig. One of my favourite bands, they're splitting up after eight years and seven records. According to their website , "We can't pin it on musical differences, we've just decided to quit while we're ahead" but you've got to figure it's frustrating when you think you're one of the best bands in the country and keep putting out records that rarely get airplay. Joanne introduced to me to the BFB's first full-length album Cold Water Songs before we started going out and [...]

I haven't exactly been following Piney Gir's career. And I think I'm glad for that. She has experimented with the nearly incompatible genres of electronica and country in the past. I fear I wouldn't like her takes on either. But I think with her new record she's found her way. On The Yearling she mixes up all her musical influences and comes up with her own unique sound. More info and to buy The Yearling here . Say I'm Sorry [...]
There have been a few highly anticipated returns this year, but I've not been interested in the likes of Muse and Arctic Monkeys. One of the returns that I have been looking forward to however, was Piney Gir. The Kansas girl, transplanted in London, has been through various musical incarnations ...
Piney's new record is full of little gems, this is a short sweet one just for you 'Blixa Bargels Bicycle' is a minute of fun, just her and a 6 string… Piney and her band will be playing some shows in August/September, dates on her myspace.Piney Gir & The Age Of Reason Blixa Bargels Bicycle [...]

Piney Gir Genre: Indie / Folk / Soul From: London, United Kingdom Piney Gir, who was recently interviewed by the Devil (see On The Trail O The Lonesome Piney ), is creating quite a stir with her country girl schtick and songs about love and heartache. But it's not all hankies out, maudlin tales of sorrow and Dolly Parton dresses the 'Queen of the Bitterscene' has a capricious side. Check out the whimsical [...]

Piney Gir Genre: Indie / Folk / Soul From: London, United Kingdom The UK's answer to Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins , Angela Penhaligon aka Piney Gir took time out from promoting her new single, 'Of All The Wonderful Things' (where she is joined by the Brakes ' singer Eamon Hamilton) to give the Devil an exclusive insight into her influences, how she got her name, the strangest place she's ever [...]

Piney Gir is another band I stole from blogs, though their name is strange enough that I would have downloaded it from Doug eventually (for he has this album as well). Anyhow, this is a band that truly sounds different with every song. From the electro-pop of Boston to the country twang of Greetings, Salutations, Goodbye to the violins on K-I-S-S-I-N-G , you really don't know what to expect from the next song. That isn't necessarily a good thing, but at least it keeps you on your toes. From Peakahokahoo [...]
Angela Penhaligon (aka Piney Gir) is from Kansas, lives in London, has been a game show contestant and front-woman for Vic Twenty, an Analogue Synthpop (?) band... Her debut album is full of fun, with a Country twang and a mixture of Electro sounds, sometimes loud and sometimes mysterious. Confused - listen to the two tracks here, and note her lovely, versatile voice go through all the different styles. Listen to 'K-I-S-S-I-N-G' Listen to 'Greetings, Salutations, [...]
